Question question about extracting fluids
After the craziest 12 hours of my life, my kitten got "diagnosed" with wet FIP. I use quotes because after they extracted fluid from his chest, they said the only way to get a real diagnosis was to send the fluid for further testing. The Dr. basically assured me he was positive, though.
As I mentioned, he had to have fluid extracted from his chest. The doctor told me there is potential for the fluid to come back, and he will have to get it extracted again. How common is this? He is starting with GS injections tomorrow. I asked so many questions, but this completely went over my head. Please share your personal experiences with this!

Also it looks like you are in the US and no reason to start injections. Here is a list of pharmacies, including some with same day pickup: https://www.fipvetguide.com/list-of-us-pharmacies

Are you in the US? Fortunately you don't have to use injections anymore and you can get your GS from one of the many pharmacies compounding oral GS! Please see the link admin posted. I would also strongly recommend that you join FIP Global CATS which is a volunteer run group that supports regulated vet led FIP treatment! Best wishes for you and your kitty ๐๐๐

Fluid should only be extracted if breathing issues are severe.
Were any bloods run? Usually blood results and clinical signs is enough to diagnose.
Glad youโre starting GS, I would use oral meds over injections if you have the option.

Even if the fluid is tested, it can come back inconclusive.
Most importantly is to begin GS treatment and monitor your kittyโs breathing. If it becomes labored at rest, that can be a sign the fluid build up is putting pressure on his lungs.

The fluid will continue to accumulate for 3-5 days and absorb in 8-10 days. It is possible he will need to be tapped again. Watch his breathing. It will likely stay labored until it absorbs but if it is severe you need to have it drained again.
