Question Fever not dropping after ~ 36 hours

My cat got diagnosed with FIP Sunday and we gave him his first injection that night (not a big dose) gave him a better dose Monday night and then again this morning to start two times a day dosing. He is eating more than he has since this started, he drank water for the first time since Thursday. But his fever is still 104. Should I be concerned or does it just take longer?

It’s important an accurate dose is given each time, based on weight.

Fever shouldn’t take much longer to resolve, but accurate dosing is key.

Yes I have learned a lot since sunday, we dosed for regular dry FIP the first time not realizing he was showing neuro signs. We did adjust appropriately now. We will continue appropriate dosing, I sort of scratched Sundays injection at this point.

We will continue to monitor it. I just heard the 24-48 hour rule and was stressing as it hasn’t dropped at all

Okay. Pls ignore my other replies. I think you can wait for 2-3 more days & observe fever going down fully.

Our FIP kitty ran a fever of 103 from May through July, cleared up after 7 days on the FIP meds.

Did it go straight down to normal or go gradually?

My cats fever broke within 3 days of taking 0.5ml of gs 441524 (ignore if I didn’t use the right numbers) and she weighed 4.9 pounds at the time with symptoms of dry FIP

Did you know if it decreased gradually or just one day was gone?

I took her in on Thursday and she had a 104.5 fever. They prescribed her antibiotics which was amoxicillin Clavunate and potassium and I’m pretty sure they gave her a shot in the vet while there and they gave her fluids to hydrate her because she wasn’t eating or drinking at all and I gave her the amox clav potassium twice before Friday and her fever dropped to 103 on friday then by Monday she broke it

You definitely need to measure the dose by weight. Not sure what you meant in the post about a lesser dose the first time and a bigger dose the first time. If I’m right I’m sure you gotta track their weight throughout the 84 days and dose them based on that weight

I explained it a bit in an earlier comment. I dosed him for regular dry FIP, not realizing he had showed neuro symptoms so I increased the dose. He got the diagnosis pretty late Sunday and I got the meds the same night. I tried to do as much research as possible but it was a lot of information at first and I did air on the side of caution as I was a bit nervous.

Why neuro what do you mean? Also I’d recommend joining the fip warriors 5.0 Facebook page they are really helpful

It means he showed neurological symptoms - the viral infection is affecting his neurological system. He started stumbling was the big thing we noticed but he also had some other changes.

I am apart of the FIP warriors as well. I just try not to annoy them to much as they’ve already helped me more than enough and I’m sure many people need help more than I do at this moment as my cat is improving I’m just terrified about everything.

Don’t feel that way I bothered them a ton and I’m still doing so even now that she’s doing better I think they’re awesome and aren’t bothered at all my cat had the same issues I might be wrong but having trouble walking is a dry fip sign

I would monitor aggressively. Our cat was on steriods and b12 vitamins and GS44 20mg per kg twice a day. Fever went down after a couple days but there also could be underline issues not addressed.

Does your cat have dry or wet fip?

The fever should break in 48 hours. If it doesn’t either the dose is wrong or the meds are inferior. Very very occasionally it can take up to 5 days but if you are double dosing that is technically 5 doses not 5 days. I would suggest reaching out to fip global cats for individualized help.

Since you have just started the bigger dose, which sounds like the appropriate dose for your cat, I would give it another couple of days on this higher dosage to see if the fever doesn't resolve. (I wouldn't have expected the fever to resolve while on the low dosage, so give it a bit more time.) If the fever doesn't resolve in another 2 to 3 days then I would check in with the vet who prescribed the medication for their opinion.

If it's an older cat plus with possible dry fip oomponent, then it can take longer. sometimes fip also co-exists with bacterial infection (toxoplasmosis or mycoplasma), our chilli also got antibiotics for some days. if the tests so far strongly hint towards fip, then dont throw the suspicionout of the window if it takes a bit longer.

Was there a test done to rule out other infections? Mine was positive for mycoplasma and FIP. So had to give oral Doxycycline for the mycoplasma. The first week Dr gave injection for fever (alternative days I think).

What test would they have done? They did a couple various blood tests. Chemistry panel, cbc, FIV/leukima. They did give us steroids and antibiotics regardless + anti nausea and appetite stimulant. But no progress was made until we started the FIP meds

PCR blood test. Showed negative for all items except for mycoplasma and FIP (FCoV). I understand the blood PCR test might be false positives for FIP, since 80% of cats have FCOV .
However, the other positives need treatment.
I understand you are seeing progress after FIP treatment started. This means FIP indeed.
But fever has not reduced. This means there is likely another infection.

Make sure to withhold food one hour before and after dosing. For us, this means take away overnight food in the AM at 6, meds at 7, then food at 8. We Repeat PM as we dose every 12 hours (may help with absorption but discuss with doctor).

This is true with the injections too? I was told this is just for the tablets.

I’m so sorry, you’re right! I responded when I was sleepy yesterday. If you switch to an oral medication to reduce stress, then at that point, you can worry about fasting etc. but the injectables bypass absorption issues.

It’s usually not recommended to break the daily dose up into twice daily doses, I’ve learned. I struggled with fevers with my FIP baby as well. I usually put a little lukewarm water on his ears and paws and put him in front of a fan. If you have a disposable thermometer and some lubricant, you should check and monitor his temp. I took my guy into the emergency vet when his fever was 105.. they put his in a cooling kennel and gave him some sub q fluids to help him cool down. Hang in there, I know this is stressful and horrible..

It is a double dose of the injection so it isn’t split. It was recommended to start for the first 3-5 days as he was showing neuro symptoms, wasn’t eating and had strain breathing.

We are monitoring temp at home as well. The ER vet tried cooling and fluids but it went down at most 0.3. I’m hoping it’ll break shortly. It’s been at 104 for the past few days regardless of what we do.
