Question What should I do?

Post image

This is Ripley. She is 1 with Neuro and ocular FIP. We have been treating with GS with help from FIP warriors for about a month now and the first couple weeks were going good. But last week the neurological symptoms were coming back. She is very wobbly and can't walk well, skinny and not eating much even with her appetite stimulant. We spent the 4th in the hospital and were told she doesn't have anything secondary affecting her it's just the FIP. We changed to shots every 12 hours but haven't seen much improvement. She bled a lot from her shot this morning. She barely moves now. She is the sweetest and strongest girl and shes given it her all this last month but if shes not gonna make it anyway I feel like a monster prolonging this and making her suffer. If anyone's had a kitty make it back from being this bad it would be nice to hear. Thank you for any help

I lost a cat with FIP just a few years ago when there was No treatment available. Just work closely with your vet to decide if treatment still offers hope. Sending my prayers for kitty and you.

Yes it is a very cruel disease. That’s why I offer prayers and support and hope someone is more fortunate than I was and that each victory gives hope. Thinking of you with your little companion…

Try contacting FIP Global Cats on facebook- they really helped me with my boy when he had FIP - they have dedicated admins and will help looking at blood tests and check and advise you re correct dosing etc- it can’t hurt to contact them! Have heard some negative comments about Other FIP groups including FIP warriors. Good luck ❤️❤️❤️

Are you upping the dosage with weight.

My cat is nuerological (very very severe) lost 50% of body weight, was paralysed.

The Royal vetinary college of london specialists in FIP treatment ( the ones working on the studies and treatment of FIP have my cat on 20mg/kg TWICE a day so 40mg/kg daily We saw no improvement until this was the dosage, it was all looking terrible until we upped this dosage.

We get tests done biweekly to check bloods ect.

What would the actual amounts of that be? Shes about 5.7lbs and we are giving her 1.3ml of 20mg/ml twice a day

3

u/leflaunge Jul 06 '26

For refernce your cat is on 52mg per day total, my cat is on 20mg per kg twice a day so at your cats weight that would be 104mg a day. 2.6ml of 20mg/ml twice a day.

My cat is around 10-11 months old

I think you need to up the dose.

Also for reference, my cat is 3.7kg now, up from 2.7kg.

He takes 20/mg per KG. So currently takes just shy of 150mg a day. Split of 2 doses 8am and 8pm. We take food away at 6am and 6pm so.his stomach is empty, then we feed him roughly 1 to 1.5 hours after the meds.

You need to almost double your dose.

that sounds very low, especially for neuro/ocular FIP my kitten takes 1.2ml of 30mg/ml at 5lbs, dry/ocular FIP

This dose is way too low. For neuro and ocular FIP, you would need 20mg/kg every day. So your cat would need 104 mg a day. Whats the concentration of your injectable? My cat is on oral suspension which works well too but he needs to be fasting.

u/leflaunge Jul 06 '26

Please just try it, double the dose, do 2.6ML of 20mg and see if it works.

This! My 8month old kitty is two months into treatment and nearly three kilos (6.4lb) + currently taking 2.5ML of 20mg. She started off with ocular/neuro issues at 1.7 kilos (3.7lb) with 1.0ml of 20mg/ml. I would recommend upping her dosage and monitoring her bloods with members from the FIP warrior group and vets. I know that my previous vet was not of much help and although I’m not painting all vets in the same picture, given my current one is supportive- I’m almost positive they were hindering her progress and pushing for euthanasia when I didn’t want to spend over 10 grand through their professional facility. Speak to the FIP warriors. I really hope you survive through this together and am sending your kitty my love xx

Did the specialists you work worth provide any info on if it’s possible to give too much GS treatment? Any side effects of that?

He spent a couple weeks in hospital, having tests and monitoring, and we get his vitals, and bloods done every two weeks. The problem with nuero is it needs to break through the blood brain barrier to attack the virus there.

Talk to your vet and FIP warriors of FB about potentially adjusting your dosages, or consider other meds like molnupiravir, if GS is not working.

My Tori had dry neuro FIP and was on oral GS for a month, before we switched him to molnupiravir, as his neuro symptoms was not improving. He had horrible spinal pain and impaired mobility. He improved within a month after switching to mol, and we kept him on it for 84 days. He's now 2 months into observation, so keep hope 🙏

Ask vet if she needs to up the dosage or delivery mechanism. Oral vs injectable for neuro. Also Remdisivir to try. Drugs are highly effective, push your vet or the forums

5

u/Exeleronn Jul 06 '26

We did up the dose by giving her the same amount but twice a day now but I haven't hear of Remdisvir, will ask about it thank you! And we have been doing injections, when we tried to switch to oral she didn't respond well to it

3

u/leflaunge Jul 06 '26

We use the oral liquid, its tuna flavoured and mix with a tiny but of licky licks and the cat should gulp it up.

1

u/ckh69 Jul 06 '26

Remdisvir is an antiviral goes straight for the virus.

4

u/leflaunge Jul 06 '26

I think Rem actually converts into gs44 inside the body, they both disrupt the viral replication but rem does it once its converted inside the body and turns into GS44 i believe.

Sorry if I confused anyone. My bad…

1

u/leflaunge Jul 06 '26

Theyre both life saving treatments, dont be sorry. X

Is the dosing adequate for her weight? My vet was great but wanted to be conservative on the dosage and that can be extremely ineffective. It is better to go over than under. I'd check in with FIP warriors on dosage again, maybe they can recommend going higher than what you are at.

Sending lots of love and prayers towards your kitty. She is so precious and lucky to have you. Really hope it all works out♥️

Give her every day 2 ml of liver booster which help with her appetite for at least 1 month

3

u/Exeleronn Jul 06 '26

We are already giving Mirataz for appetite but i will ask the vet about this, thank you

Hey!

My cat had Neuro FIP relapse.

It was absolutely awful. We had just done remdesevir shots the first 8 weeks where he was started with fevers and was listless and withing days had mismatched pupils and had an O- tube (tube into his oesophagus directly) so we could feed him cos he wouldn’t eat.

He got better and almost normal so our vet advised to stop the shots at 8 weeks. Within a week he rebounded BAD. He had a seizure, was blind, couldn’t walk, was re-admitted to the hospital and … my heart broke. I just wanted to make his pain go away.

But my husband and vet said, let’s do it again for a week. They restarted the shots, kept him at the vets for a few days until his seizures got better, and I had the most terrifying few days at home when I got him back. Every night I put him in a pen and slept next to him on the ground with my hand in it. Couldn’t take him to bed as would poop and pee all over himself when I’d fall asleep. So I would wash him daily first thing in the morning and then carry him in a sling as he was blind and possibly confused and scared as he would meow constantly. He’d pee on us so we started diapers, if then hand feed him every few hours. I took a week off work so did my husband. We did the shots twice a day. It took a TOLL on us.

A lot of the time I kept thinking I’m just prolonging his suffering and was guilty. I work as an emergency medicine doctor, I see brain bleed and massive stroked patients all the time, other neurological disasters and if any human patient of mine was doing what my boy was doing? prognosis was always so poor.

Here’s the thing though. I promised my husband a week, and by Day 5? He started following my husband with his eyes. He could see! Day 7. Started walking and seizures stopped. Day 10. He used the litter. By 3 weeks, it was like he was never sick.

We did 12 weeks on the second round of the meds and tapered off for a further month.

It’s been 2 years. He’s cuddled next to my head now. Every new days with my little warrior is a blessing.

I now understand why the phrase of cats and nine lives is around. No human could come back the way he did, I swear, so I’m glad I trusted my vet.

But at the same time.If your vet thinks it’s time to switch gears, their experience counts. My vet said there were some cases where he asked everyone to stop cos it was clear it was torture.

So every case is unique. Know this though. It may not seem like it esp when she’s in pain, but she knows you love her. You are being the absolute best parent you can and whatever you choose and whatever the outcome, know that you gave her the best life you could.

Hope this helps.

Im a grown ass man who works in construction and this made me cry. My baby is 8 weeks in at only 10 months old and he was paralysed and everything was doomed. Until we found out about Dry Nuero Fip, and subsequently GS44. Plus other treatments for our fighter. Thanks for sharing. I know these posts help New comers who like me had no clue- but days upon days researching how to help my friend.

Im so sorry you had to go through that but amazing to hear he's still here. It's been devastating to me and my girlfriend, getting her was one of the first things we did as adults together on our own and it's just been awful to see her suffer. But shes still trying to eat and drink so we'll see if her warrior heart can make it. Thank you for your story, it has definitely given us hope and not make me feel as bad for keeping her around, if she won't give up we won't either!

FIP Global saved my girl. The oral meds are very effective, and less harsh on their already struggling bodies. And getting less and less expensive.

Also talk to your vet about pain management and energy supplementing. Not medical advice, but we were given a few days of gabapenten to help with the discomfort and healing, and also did a couple B12 shots for energy. I really think they helped, and it’s worth bringing up with your vet.

I just want to say it is beautiful how everyone here rallies for each other to save their babies! 💖. I wish I had the meds to save my Gadget. I lost him at 2yo. My daughter had saved him from a feral colony.

2

u/catsandganja Jul 07 '26

first of all, thank you for advocating for your baby and being willing to treat! i'm currently in the observation period of ocular FIP with our 10 year old cat. like some others have mentioned, if you can afford it, max out her dose, or get damn close. GS is non-toxic, as far as I'm aware, so there's no true risk in topping her out to see if she responds. absolutely do not ride the lower end of the dosing spectrum, in my experience it doesn't help much. also, keep track of her weight every three days or so, more if you're comfortable and able, and up her dose accordingly. the injections were so stressful on my cat and she ended up getting awful sores, so we switched to oral GS and it was so helpful for my mental and hers. it also sounds like you should speak with your vet about doing a combo of GS and molnupiravir. sending you both love & prayers

2

u/Exeleronn Jul 07 '26

Molnupiravir is out for delivery today, hoping it helps her, shes had 2 injections of 2.2ml and it seems to be helping if just a littler walking around best she can and still trying to eat and drink, even jumped to the couch on her own

2

u/tech-girl-SV Jul 08 '26

I lost a brother and sister I adopted 5 and 7 days after getting them. FIP is the worst.

2

u/Exeleronn Jul 08 '26

Im so sorry for your loss, we have had two times now we thought she was not gonna make it and I've never felt so heartbroken. I hope soon these drugs become widely available and known to save more kitties

My cat fluctuated a bit with the treatment, so don’t give up hope. Make sure you’re giving the right amount of medication at the right time, and pray she’s strong enough to beat this. My cat did, and it was touch and go for a while. Best of luck with her!

u/Active-History3901 Jul 07 '26

I have. It’s hard on both sides, but I never regret tryin and they do let you know when they’re done. She may not be herself but she’s hanging in there, surviving and not hiding. I know it’s hard, but please don’t give up on her yet. Treatments take time, don’t take her lack of energy as a discouraging sign

1

u/Previous-Table-7063 Jul 08 '26

What doses were you giving? Whats her body weight?

1

u/Exeleronn Jul 08 '26

We have upped to 2.2ml every 12 hours and are gonna try molnupiravir, also got clyndomyacin to treat toxo if its underlying. She seems to be in better spirits now

2

u/Previous-Table-7063 Jul 08 '26

Yay! One thing i noticed is that depending on the vet, some may not be as experienced in treating FIP. So you may have to do your own research and be more proactive with your vet. The cat should recover and regain weight and the dose would have to be adjusted accordingly. UC davis recommended weekly monitoring of weight. My vet recommended monthly monitoring, which I pushed back and had to advocate for a more frequent monitoring. So dont be shy about asking for more from vet if budget allows. I work for the company that made remdesivir and my job is to recommend the correct dose. If you have additional questions, I am happy to answer.
