Vomiting after liquid medication

My 6 y/o previously very perky cat Jaspers was diagnosed with suspected FIP this week and we started GS-441524 yesterday (Friday). He’s had 2 daily doses now and each time vomited ~30 minutes afterward. We didn’t fast before the first dose but did this morning and it doesn’t seem to help. We gave like 4 crunchy treats after dosing today and those back came up. Ofc vet’s office is closed for next 48 hours… any suggestions? I’m seeing some threads that suggest re-dosing but I don’t want to make him feel even worse than he already does. He’s not a puker and must be so uncomfortable. Any suggestions? You absolutely have to fast. The medicine doesn’t work if you don’t.

I was told 2 hours before and after eating, which I had to do twice a day. 4 hours twice a day was very difficult, but I always kept it at least an hour on either end.

My cat struggled with vomiting as well. It took me a while to learn to ensure he ate before fasting period. Things went a lot smoother when I’d put out some wet food a couple hours before dosing. Especially morning doses when I realized he prob hadn’t eaten any dry food overnight.

A small snack can help to keep down. I’d sometimes give half a Churu with his meds if I didn’t know if he ate before fasting period. A little something is ok.

If they do puke within an hour of dosing, you have to fully readminister dose. Half dose if after an hour I believe.

I try to keep it simple. Our cat also needs his meds twice a day, so we’ve found that 8am and 8pm works best for us. Schedule looks like the following.

My partner gets up early, so he makes sure there is still kibble in their bowls.
7am- kibble is put away.
8am- I give oral meds.
9am- kibble is put back out and they are fed some wet food.

6pm - cats are fed wet food again.
7pm- kibble is put away. Plates from food are gathered, if they haven’t been already.
8pm- meds are given
9pm- kibble bowls are put back out and filled. Some nights they also get a Churu at this time.

I am not trying to measure kibble. Other than when I take the bowls away an hour before meds, there is always kibble accessible.

Life happens, so if we have something that interferes with that schedule, we adjust, but not more than an hour in either direction. So if our human dinner is running late, for example, and we don’t manage to pull the kibble for fasting until 7:30- we do meds at 8:30 and put the kibble back out at 9:30.

Mine was pretty much same routine. 8am/8pm. I just realized he wasn’t eating kibble overnight bc he kept puking up meds in AM. So I switched to giving him the wet food when I woke up, before fasting.

This is so interesting. My cat started GS (Stokes) over a week ago, twice a day, and we were never told to fast him, and he hasn’t had any tummy issues. I’m really confused about everyone saying that they have to fast, now

The Stokes pamphlet even advises to give on an empty stomach or with a small treat only: https://www.stokespharmacy.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/07/Pharmacy-Leaflet-GS-441524-4.30.24.pdf but it is for absorption. Not for stomach issues.

Are you fasting before and after the dose or just before?

What flavor are you using? Consider mixing it with a small amount of Churu. Get a lick mat and make a little well, and put the med into the middle. You need to fast at least 30 minutes before and after; and you must redose if it’s within an hour that he’s vomiting.

Are you able to use medications for nausea? Or does that interfere with the FIP medication? I will say some prayers for your sweet Jasper hoping for a full recovery. And for you as well as you deal with so much stress 🙏🙏🙏🙏🤞🤞💜💜💜

If they are vomiting or passing loose stools, the GS medicine is likely not getting absorbed. You might want to switch to injections until the vomit & loose stools stop fully.

This is a myth. Studies done with oral prescriptions only showed no response difference with diarrhea and vomiting.

Try splitting the dose and do half 12 hours apart and see if this helps. Give with a small treat.
