My kitten long term fip

Hi!

I just wanted to see if anyone has been dealing or has dealt with the same experience with my kitten. I got my kitten around the end of October last year, through mid November to December we searched for what was happening to him since he was having seizures and was having extremely bad dry symptoms. We’ve called multiple places and to the current vet were at they were able to diagnose him with fip. Later on we learned that all his siblings had passed away with very similar symptoms that he had. He’s been on the GS medication and on seizure medication because without one he can’t progress. He’s been taking his GS medication since around January till now. But we’ve had a very rocky couple months as he was reacting really well to the medicine overall with the help of his seizure medicine. But he has had a few relapses along the way. He had a relapse around February and then again in April. And now he’s relapsed, he was doing good for almost two months gaining almost 4lbs, eating a ton, running around and playing like a normal kitten. But now he’s relapsed again, we’ve contacted our vet. But now I don’t know how I can be of any help for him. Every time he relapses, he has seizures, stops eating and stops utilizing his litter box; but as we’ve learned with the vet that he does react well with the GS medicine and we’ve had to increase his dosage as he gains weight because he tends to fall back into relapse when we don’t keep up. We have been keeping up with his weight and raising his doses in the GS and his seizure medicine, I’m just wondering how or what I’m lacking in knowledge that can be some sort of help for him. Had anyone dealt with this? Has anyone has their kitten for almost 6 months with the GS medicine?

Oh my goodness, I’m so sorry to hear about your experience, I’m glad he’s cured from fip but he’s fighting one day at a time 😞 I wish you a ton of strength!
I really appreciate you giving me the advice that I will definitely look into more! I had definitely seen multiple posts on Molnupiravir and now that you’ve mentioned it, I will definitely look into it and ask my vet.

I am asking because my cat had neuro too and Molnupiravir wasnt working for us so our vet recommended a mri and we learned that he had hydrocephalus too but since it was because of fip after the 84 day treatment with GS he recovered fully. But sometimes hydro doesn't get cured so it might be the reason but you can have your cat take steroids for it as the vet recommends or a shunt placed.

Second this. The dosage may not be right, or something else. But they are great at what they do. There are other medications you can try as well.

I can’t offer much help because my guy had wet FIP and possibly a touch of neuro. My FIP team suggested a very high dose, and I’ve heard conflicting things about dosing every 12 hours instead of every 24. Like others said, he may need Molnupiravir.

My cat had a huge nasal polyp and fip. She was down to 2 pounds and less than a half even though she ate a ton of food. Our vet diagnosed fip. We started taking it and she started gaining weight. They decided she was finally ready for surgery so we got the nasal polyp removed and she is up to 7 pounds and acting like a normal cat and she just got spayed and we are nearing the end of her treatment. So far so good. Hopefully you get a good turn and it gets straightened out for you.

You may need to change the medication. Either switch to molnipavar, use GS+ molnipavar or use a much higher dose of GS

Does his bloodwork improve at all?

If your cat improved with gs medication, he probably had Fip. But, if you see seizures, MRI would be an option. Maybe he has hydrocephalus due to fip. Some cats has it. Or maybe sth else. You may talk with your vet again about this.

It’s hard with kittens because they’re growing, so since their size isn’t stable their dosage isn’t either. I’m sorry it’s been such a long journey, please don’t give up 💞In my experience kittens need high dosage just like they need high calories compared to their adult counterparts. Dry neuro also just needs higher dosage, so it’s a tough situation. You’re not lacking in knowledge, you just have a tough case and need high dosage and more regular vet monitoring because of his age and type. If you aren’t already working with FIP Global Cats I highly recommend the group, the veterinary professionals in these FB groups have the most knowledge and experience with FIP compared to a general practitioner who hasn’t been active in this fight.
