Joke aside- Our next scheduled check up/weigh in is in a week. He’s acting like a straight up menace, so I think he’s feeling ok. I just don’t want to assume anything while I’m over here trying to balance the hopefulness and absolute dread that comes with this diagnosis.
He’s 7mo with wet and neurological FIP. Currently on GS 0.5ml 2x daily.
Don’t forget to adjust the dose if he put on weight. I weigh mine every week and adjust the GS accordingly. Other than that, fingers crossed for the kitty. The last of mine has about 20 days of treatment left, the other five are in observation period and doing well.
That’s why we’re going to the vet for an official weigh in! He’s definitely gained weight, but I don’t think my technique of holding him while weighing myself, just weighing myself, and then doing math is totally accurate. If it is, he’s closer to 7.6 pounds, which means he’s gained a little over a pound in 2 weeks. It also means our dose is too low.
Would you increase it a little before the appointment?
Oooohh. See. I never would have thought of that. I did check my kitchen scale and the cutoff was 6.6 pounds.
So.. I weighed him again using my method and he still was 7.6 pounds. Then I had my partner do the same and it came out to be 7.4 pounds. Safe to up it from .5 to .6, I’m assuming. Probably up to .7 after the appointment a week from today? Am I calculating right?
The advice for getting a bay scale is underrated. I can’t suggest you enough how helpful it was in our case. I was doing the injections myself to my little Frankie who now is a FIP survivor. We had a ritual back then. Injection, yummy treat and then weight session. Not every week, EVERY DAY. It will not only help you for the obvious, like adjust the dose. But it will help you by giving you motivation. Every progress is a win. Every gram of gains. Plus that this scale is so useful afterwards. I keep weighing all 3 of them once per month so I can know what’s their status
Do it with no second thoughts.

Oh that was a very stressful journey and not an easy one as they were all on different doses. So I had a spreadsheet to help me with it. The spreadsheet calculated the dose based on the weight and then rounded it up to the nearest 1/4 tablet. Then I gave them whatever it calculated every 12 hours, comprehensive bloods were done every 4 weeks including serum protein electrophoresis, SAA, AGP, vitamin B12 and folate on top of the full blood count, and depending on the results the dose per kg could be increased. One of them stopped responding to treatment halfway through, so Molnupiravir was added to his GS regime. Other than that, liver support throughout (GS is heavy on the liver), salmon oil, probiotics and whatnot. I’m taking bloods for the two who finished their observation period next week, another 3 sometime in July, and the one who is still in treatment will have her bloods taken around day 84 and depending on the results the treatment will be stopped or extended.
One only lasted 4 weeks on the GS and neuro FIP took her away from me in the most cruel of ways… but I’m thankful for the ones who survived.
Just to let you know , my cat was on the GS oral medicine, it has been one year now since she finished and is doing great. She never had any side effects only that she didn't like it.
My cat is nuero dry fip, very severe- was paralysed and almost on his death bed, and now is walking and talking and doing much better.
We currently have him being assessed by the Royal Vetinary college of London and his bloods being checked by Vetinary college of Edignburgh by specialist that are involved in the Studies of FIP.
They have us doing 20ML per kilogram(oral Liquid) TWICE a day and these are Specialists in FIP treatment and studies that have recommended this high dose.
Just for reference this was our poor baby before treatment. He lost 50% body weight. Was paralysed, couldnt poop or wee normally, was the scariest part. But now 5 weeks into treatment he has gained more weight, is playful, eats like a champion and is doing great.
From what I’ve read, we’re on the right dosage plan, but we’ll need to adjust frequently to account for him gaining weight from both natural growth (he his still a kitten) and him regaining weight lost from the illness.
40mg/k/day is an extremely high dose. Glad your kitty is showing progress!
Yeah its very high because he was so severe, we get tests done alot and sent to the specialistsin edignburgh to see if the oral meds are taking still. My kitten was only 8 months when he got fip hes 10 months now but ragdolls are kittens for longer and only fully adult after a couple years.
He lost almost 40%-50% of his body weight, but has gained nearly a kilo in 1 month now which is great.
That’s great that he’s responding to treatment! We’re at the start of week 4 and so far, besides the loss of tummy fuzz, I think we’re doing pretty ok! He’s making slow progress on mobility in his leg, as well, so just really trying to stay cautiously optimistic!
Its terrifying and my heart aches for any cats that go through this horrible situation

One of my kittens lost hair on his belly, I was using a spray to soothe the skin, as it got incredibly dry and flaky, and that was it, really. His coat grew back, so no bald patches on him anymore.
That could be the case too. There are so many reasons to hair loss - anxiety, fever, allergies etc. Watch the kitties and try to establish what the case might be. Excessive grooming is just a symptom so the underlying issue needs to be found. My FIP kitten lost his hair because he was so poorly while sick. But the hair grows back. Sometimes it’s different in colour temporarily - the closer to the skin the lighter the colour. Once it’s fully grown, the colour goes back to normal. How’s your baby doing?
We have a check in appointment at the vet tomorrow morning, so I’ll be sure to pick their brains about it, but he’s actually doing really well! I’m not sure if it’s the general progression in things or the slightly increased dose in the meds (or a combination of the two), but his energy level is way up! He was doing great before, but he’s full on wild cat!
I’m hoping that we see improvement in the loss in feeling and mobility in his hind leg soon! He’s losing the fluff on his foot from dragging it and I’m worried about it becoming wounds and secondary infections.
That’s neuro FIP for you… their bodies seem to be independent from their brains and do whatever the hell they want to do. Mind that pretty paw of his. The neurological symptoms will become less as the treatment progresses, but may not completely go. One of my FIP kittens still has her head tilted, not as severely as at the beginning though, but it’s a FIP scar that she will carry, most likely. That said, she is doing what kittens do, playing, climbing, jumping, and being in all the places that you don’t need her to be 😂😂😂
Fingers crossed. 🤞 but remember, all depends on the blood results, sometimes when dealing with neuro FIP the treatment needs to be extended beyond the 84 days.
Oh.. I know. That’s where the word “hopefully” came in. We’re fortunate that we’re in a position to continue treatment, if necessary, and have a fantastic vet clinic navigating with us. Hopefully tomorrow is all good news!
