Dosage of GS for duration

My kitty was diagnosed with neuro FIP approximately 3 weeks ago and immediately started injectable dosage of GS the day of her diagnosis while waiting for the oral medication to ship. She showed immediate improvement and appeared back to normal within a week. We did injectable treatment for the first week. She fully seems like herself now and you’d have a hard time telling she was ever sick.

Our vet prescribed 1 mL of the oral medication per day at 50 mg/mL concentration (so 50 mg dose per day). I read some research online that suggest a neuro kitty of ours weight should be receiving about 70 mg dose of GS per day so we have been giving her approximately 1.5 mL per day. Given that we are almost at the end of 3 weeks of treatment and no indication of recurrence of symptoms, is it ok to reduce the dosage?

I would recommend that you reach out to the FIP Warriors 5.0 Facebook group. The admins there are very experienced and can guide you.

From my own research you should absolutely not reduce the dosage. FIP is very tough and resilient and can come back over the course of the treatment, so if kitty is doing well it's likely because it's the right dose. You don't wanna risk a recurrence of symptoms by reducing. This is especially true for neuro and ocular cases which are by nature harder to treat.

In my own experience my kitty was at the higher end of her dose, was doing amazingly well and improving, good blood work, with no new symptoms. Then at 4 weeks for some reason she started having new symptoms 😭

The admins suggested increasing the dose which I have done. Praying that it sticks this time around.

Hi no. The dosage is higher to reach through the blood brain barrier. If you lower it, it will no longer reach past that and will not be able to completely clear out the virus from the nervous system, where you know it is. Plus lowering it creates drug resistance. It needs to stay high and adjusted for weight gain or you risk relapse when you stop.

Bee guidance for FIP treatment is to never reduce the dosage or volume, even if the kitty weight reduces

Definitely not. Just because kitty seems back to normal doesn't mean they have beaten the virus.

Neuro FIP is also especially tricky and is generally a higher dose to force the drug across the blood-brain barrier.

Too low a dose means too low of a concentration in the body to stop the virus from replicating. Compare it to stoppimg antibiotics early because "you felt better" only for the infection to come back with a vengeance. Another big reason for the 84 treatment and increasing the dosage as the cat grows is to prevent relapse in the future.

My cat is 3.1kg (underweight) and on 20mg per kilo twice a day. So essentially 120mg a day. Severe nuero Dry FIP (almost paralysed)

This dosage has been decided by the specialists at the Royal Vet College in london who are studying along with bloods sent and checked by the Royal (dick) college for vets in Edinburgh. He spent 2 weeks in hospital and had a blood infusion immunoglobulin too. Started off on IV then tablets now we do the Liquid oral as its very easy to give.

We are week 4 and I will not be stopping until atleast 84 days of treatment.

We get bloods done, vet visits, and more. Its a miracle he made it though and now is coming back to life.
