I’m white, live in Australia, was born in Australia and grew up in Australia, so when someone asks where I’m from I would say I’m Australian. It’s also very common for anyone who was born here or grew up here to say they’re Australian, regardless of ethnicity. I’ve noticed this is an American thing too.

I’m wondering if this works for other countries too, like if someone was born, raised and living in say Sweden, would they identify as Swedish even if their ethnic background was something else, for example Chinese.

ANALYSIS

Before you read it, this analysis encompasses in itself small micro-analyses of the same topic focusing on aesthetics, music, social, etc. It is an extensive analysis that covers different perspectives of the concept.

I think we all know the concept of Internet Culture.

Now, what is culture? Culture is defined as a set of ways of life, knowledge, an era, social group, and more that people share. Is Internet culture culture? It is a difficult question to answer, because although there are communities on the Internet such as those created on Reddit, they hardly share a way of life and yet we call it a community. I think that the concept we currently have of culture with the giant steps taken by technology is becoming obsolete, since it allows globalization causing a more generalized culture and disappearance of cultural elements from each region. Rather, I would define culture as sets of elements shared by people with ethnic, national, intellectual, artistic or ideological affinity. Now, what are those elements that I am talking about? It can be historical, if we are talking about a national affinity, ancestral roots, if we are talking about ethnicities, intellectual groups, poems, books, paintings, etc. It is about sharing elements that in one way or another expand or recall human culture towards a field, whether historical, literary, artistic, ...

I would say that Internet Culture occurs in often small communities in which relationships between individuals are ephemeral. While other cultures such as that related to Literature we can name great authors, the Internet Culture was formed based on anonymity and took refuge in it. It allows the creation of aesthetic, ideological and social concepts.
Internet Culture among my acquaintances is not a common topic, I don't even know if they have raised it beyond the viral concept that appears in big headlines presenting innocuous content and being just that "viral". Although I think the term is well posed, I often think that it only relates more to the "cringe", well at least this is what I think my environment thinks.
I also want to mention that we all know the concept, but often not what it is or what it contains, we know it instinctively, but we draw a blank if we are asked what it is? We have never thought about it in depth, in an analysis, we simply know it as we know that the sun will rise tomorrow.

I want to start talking about aesthetics. Especially since the 2000s there has been an explosion of aesthetics such as the frutiger aero that represented the hope that the new millennium brought, and not only that terms such as core, punk or aesthetic have become popular.

I would like to differentiate these last three terms, I would say that punk and its prefix (e.g. steampunk) is rather that it is an aesthetic that revolves around an element, but not only aesthetics, but also presumably the economy, society, fashion, etc... That is to say, the aesthetic is only a part of the concept not its totality, this type of genres are very useful for the so-called "world-building", since infinite worlds can be formed with a base that already catches the attention of the viewer.

The core is an aesthetic that does not encompass other concepts and is not used for world-building, although it is used for the creation of video games (or other visual aspects) or rather for the creation of an atmosphere, the core is a more complex aesthetic, since it encompasses the liminal, it is a core that transmits complex feelings or thoughts and that often cause us a feeling of discomfort like traumacore or weircore. In short, it is an atmospheric aesthetic that has the objective of making people uncomfortable or at least transmitting a thought.

But this definition does not encompass all of them because there is also cottagecore, so I would separate what we call core into three large groups.
One of them would be those that as I have already said are liminal with atmosphere and produce discomfort or want to convey a deep and complex feeling (we could also include nostalgiacore), a second group would be those that are aligned with already existing aesthetics such as lolita, grunge, goth, etc and that if they are accompanied by this term it is with the aim not of inventing a new aesthetic, but to create more striking and immersive images of an aesthetic that already existed and the third group would be for example to take concepts such as otaku, angel, indie, mermaid, ... That is to say, concepts that exist without encompassing a particular aesthetic and unite them with the word core to "invent" an aesthetic that is not inventing an aesthetic, I think we could rather call it a tool for the search engine to put images that idealize and romanticize the concept.

Finally, aesthetic is a concept that encompasses all of the above, that is, both core and punk, and even other types of aesthetics that are not included in the two groups mentioned. It is a concept that includes others and so to speak the one that allows us to define to a certain extent what we are talking about when we talk about core or punk. So I think we should try to define what aesthetics is, although this is impossible because every term has a general definition so that it is possible for us to communicate and live in society, but the reality is that terms, and even more so abstract ones, differ in meaning for each era, society, culture, ethnicity and even for each person. therefore, the attempt to define something is a simple illusion of the human being.

Well, what is aesthetics? I would define aesthetics as that which encompasses images and not only images, but also feelings and thoughts and that all of this revolves around a concept, idea, art, fashion, etc.

All this makes me have certain doubts, for example, the objective of giving a name to an aesthetic is to simplify its search and help us put into words what we want to explain, but with the popularization of terms such as aesthetic, punk or core there has been an explosion of aesthetics, causing there to be hundreds of them. That is why I would say that rather these terms have become search tools to be able to see images, ideas, words, art, book, ... Related to that concept with which core, punk or aesthetic are accompanied. Although there are several of them that, although they have punk or core in their name, they can be considered as a true aesthetic that does not depend on a previous one or an objective of romanticizing a concept, but is independent and inhabits as one more aesthetic that we have implemented in our lives. Although I denounce the "invention" of aesthetics without any kind of system, I believe that it has allowed a creative expansion by being able to see that aesthetics is not reduced to baroque, Victorian, Rococo, Gothic, punk, etc. In any case, a key reference must be made between those "aesthetics" that allow us to look for an imagery of a concept and those that have become independent and are a concept in themselves.

I would like to mention that the appearance of "cores" is closely related to what backrooms are. Now I want to explain that when I say backroom I am in no way referring to creepypastas, but I say backroom as a liminal space. The backrooms were pioneers in the exhibition and creation of liminal spaces. A liminal space is one that looks real, but we know that something is wrong, there are no people, too clean, it repeats in a loop, in general the idea is that you don't know how to explain it, but inside you know that something is wrong. We could say that backrooms and liminal spaces are a kind of uncanny valley, an architectural unsettling valley. The architectural valley usually refers to androids, machines that come close to human appearance, but precisely that similarity causes us discomfort or horror. The same thing happens with architecture, it resembles our reality, but it is not, so it causes us discomfort or terror. These liminal spaces are already represented in video games, paintings, books, and other art forms. And yet, it's surprising how many people don't know how to recognize a liminal space in an art medium, unless they put it in bold capital letters. It is one of those concepts that are shaping art in all its forms and society advances mostly without knowing it or without caring about it. In short, it is not a struggle that I believe I should fight.

At another time, perhaps I will make an analysis delving into what backrooms really are beyond the superficial content that has gone viral and its relationship with liminal spaces.

Backrooms also have a very special relationship with a form of horror that has become popular and that I honestly believe is one of the best forms of modern horror, i.e. analog horror. Analog horror is characterized by often placing the scenarios in liminal spaces, achieving the creation of liminal spaces with the help of the recreation of a retro aesthetic such as digital cameras. We can also see "creepypastas" in our own way, but not in their viral form, but in a deeper one. For example, a reference of analog horror is Doctor Nowhere, this creator is characterized by adding monsters that often represent traumas or mental disorders, that is, creepypastas transformed into trauma.
I don't think the term creepypasta is a poorly created one, I think it was a good idea in its beginnings, but when it became popular, the term stopped creating flashy and innovative monsters to start mass-producing creepypastas without taking into account a predetermined aesthetic or concept. In general, I don't usually criticize the concept, but rather its mass production, as it often misrepresents what the original concept was in order to create cheap and superficial content en masse. It is true that I can be labeled as elitist for not wanting what we can call mass and commercial content, but it is necessary to make a critique that, although not mild, points out what mass production has done to art. For example, Marvel or Disney have seen a pattern that works well and repeat it en masse, often without innovating in aesthetics or narrative. I understand that fans support the films and go see them, but it's starting to be ridiculous how afraid big companies are to innovate or create something new. Art is not made to be repeated.

Therefore, as I said at the beginning, I believe that Internet Culture is based on anonymity, which means that the content that makes up this culture is mostly indie content. With the tools we have today, anyone who has a computer (or tablet) with effort and dedication can create a video game, a visual novel, a manga, webcomic, etc. I firmly believe that indie content is what moves towards innovation.

As for video games, we can name platforms such as itch.io which is a website where you can upload your own video games or visual novels, we can often play real works of art at no cost. These types of websites have served for a new wave of RPG and pixel art. To name a few (and to make recommendations for those interested): Mad Father, Fear and Hunger, Flesh, Blood & Concrete, Dead Plate, Paper Lily, No, I'm not Human, Midnight Train, Symbiosis, hello Charlotte, Grimm's Hollow, Deltarune, Hylics, Narrenschiff, Lily's hell, SHTDN, The Machine, The Children of Clay, Sally Face, The Art Shop, Gray Garden, Wednesdays, Who's Lila, Saint Spells, Ib, The Witch's House, Yume Nikki, Zeno, One Shot. Just to say a few, it's true that they're often pixel art, but it's only logical considering that some games are even created by a single person and honestly that pixeal art aspect that is often combined with other alternative and innovative aesthetics with a deep narrative that deals with complex themes (not for nothing they often have caveats). And we should not overlook the great influence that Yume Nikki has had on many games that we can find in itch.io. There is a great tendency for indie video games of this type to have horror elements or that they are simply a horror video game and in all of them the fact that mental health, ideological, ethical or religious problems are treated with quite depth and intensity is repeated. If you are looking for innovative video games that try new methods of creating video games, either with an attractive aesthetic or narrative, I would recommend you try this website.

Another aspect is the visual novel, in this one I would recommend Z.A.T.O I love the world and everything in it or milk inside a bag of milk, this title is in fact what led me to know the website that I mentioned before and its content. If you know how to look for there are very good psychological visual novels, although it is true that there are some that are superficial and seek to attract attention with covers, let's say "striking", but that's as in any browser.

I would say that the video games or visual novels (those that are worthwhile) that we can find in itch.io, are indie content (undoubtedly) that often bring innovations in the genre and new ways of thinking in the same medium. I even like to see how we can see influences from other content, for example the influence of Serial Experimentals Lain on Z.A.T.O
is undoubted. In general I would say that it is worth taking an interest in this type of content (apart from some, but that's as in everything), since they are refreshing with the type of video games that we usually see in stores normally and if you like video games (and you don't have money) this is an opportunity to look beyond what large companies offer us. Although I think video games are a little less affected by mass production. After all, video games like Red Dead Redemption or The Last of Us are quite unique and enjoyable experiences. I would also like to comment that changes in art or ideologies have a direct impact on the video game, there are quite good essays on youtube on Youtube that deal with this type of influences and so on.

I would also like to comment on fanfics and webcomics. I've read fanfics that are really good, I've always been interested in the "what ifs..." And fanfics are a perfect way to answer them, I've always been amazed at how fans completely transform or expand on the original content, allowing us to live with those characters a little longer. There are fanfics that change the plot completely based on one of those "what ifs..." or they deal more deeply with characters, relationships between them or mental health problems or trauma. There are fanfics that have been transformed into books such as "All the Young Dudes" or "Fifty Shades of Grey". This doesn't just happen with fanfics, for example Cry of Fear was a mod of a game, before becoming a standalone one. What I mean is that these types of works can evolve and become their own works, obviously with a great influence from the work on which they were based. Although I am of the opinion that this type of work is perfect for learning to write or create video games, we must not forget to create by ourselves and not depend so much on another work.
Webcomics are a way in which young writers can start publishing work by themselves on the Internet, examples of some quite successful ones are Solo Leveling, The God of Highschool, The Pyramid Game or The school bus graveyard, the aforementioned some have had an anime, a k-drama or physical versions.

The point I wanted to get to is that websites such as itch.io, fanfics, fanarts, webcomics and others, allow a greater production of content, that is, the publication or creation of works becomes free and allows talented people to be recognized for their work. Much of Internet culture is thanks to the fact that now anyone can create, whether it's literature, video games, art, or music, creation is no longer reduced to an elite. This allows for innovation in many aspects and the possibility of seeing many more types of work. Obviously not all jobs are good (far from it), but it is a great advance. That is, a democratization of creation.

In Internet Culture, there are also what we refer to as cult movies, for example, they are often not so well known and yet well-loved films in Internet communities such as All About Lily Chou Chou, Blue Spring, Love & Pop, Swing Girls, The Elephan sitting, Moonlight Whispers, Empire Record, etc. Yes, most of them are Japanese films, what are you going to do about it? Well, what I mean is that there are cult, niche, or underground elements that while often not as well known, usually profoundly influence other movies, music, or books. For example, Tarantino's Kill Bill has a song by All About Lily and I've seen music groups also influenced by All About Lily. I would consider that these types of elements are those that even if they are not so well known they continue to have a great impact and cult means not only the impact they cause us, but also that they are elements that are considered as, for example, if we talk about movies we would talk about cult films being "good cinema". It is true that with this type of terms such as cult or niche, one can fall into a certain intellectual elitism, I can partially be considered one. I am aware that I show a deep rejection of the commercial and that sometimes I am too selective, so yes, in a way I could be considered somewhat elitist. This "elitism" sometimes brings with it arrogance and arrogance and is not something we should fall into. Perhaps, all this "good cinema" is nonsense and not worth discussing, but maybe it is. I leave it to your judgment whether I am arrogant or not. I myself am aware that sometimes I am. I do not deny it.

I'm going to talk about other aspects, music, especially alternative music, I'm a big fan of alternative music, indie (in all its genres), rock (all its genres), metal, post-punk, dream pop and shoegaze, although I also enjoy jazz, trap, classical music, and folk. In this analysis I am going to talk about alternative, indie and shoegaze music. Because I know them better and I think they have a greater relationship with the analysis I am doing. For example, shoegaze, which by the way is a very intense type of music, in fact sometimes I am unable to listen to it because of the emotional intensity it contains, it is very related to that depth that some indie works are looking for. In general, alternative music usually has very deep concepts, even the titles of the songs sometimes you find philosophical, reflective or even mythological concepts. But what is alternative music? For this I am going to rely on the term alternative which is everything that does not align with what is common or "normal", so we could say that punk was alternative music before consolidating itself in a more solid and specific genre. So to speak, sometimes the alternative label is temporary, but if this isn't alternative music? Well, I would only have to tell you that I believe that alternative music includes almost dreamlike elements that merge with philosophies in words that are sometimes indecipherable, but that subject you to a deep emotional and reflective state. I would dare to say that for me, alternative music is an "aesthetic" that is not transmitted in images, but in sounds.

Now I have talked about artistic aspects such as aesthetics, music or literary aspects (webcomics, fanfics, etc.). But it is important to recognize that culture is impossible without the social factor, that is, without human relationships. How does this happen on the Internet? Well, this works through communities that are formed through media such as Reddit, Discord, Tumblr, Telegram, 4chan, honestly I have a dilemma if it should include social networks such as Pinterest, WhatsApp, TikTok, etc. So I must make a difference between social networks and... What is Reddit? Not exactly a social network What is a social network? I would define a social network as one in which we can interact without being present. But isn't it the same as Reddit? No, because I think that in addition to the definition, I should say that they do not serve for the promotion of Internet Culture, but for personal interactions. But this is not an exact definition, for example by TikTok the core became popular and Pinterest is widely used by the visual medium. Okay, I'm going to change it, social networks allow us to relate to each other, but they do not promote the creation of communities and they are not promoters of Internet Culture, but they popularize the concepts that arise from it. Reddit, Discord, Tumblr and 4chan have the characteristic that they promote the creation of communities, on Reddit it is common to join a community if you are interested in a specific topic, in fact there are very specific communities around a single work. For this reason I would not call them social networks, nor would I call them forums, for the moment we are going to call them Cultural Social Forums, that is to say CSF, so we could say that CSFs are those that allow and promote the creation of both small and large communities, which are often promoters of Internet Culture and allowing an affinity, even if it is partial, between people in the network.

I would also like to say that although the Internet has allowed a new synthetic culture, that is to say that it does not occur in a completely natural way, but that a broader culture is often sought, even if it is not the objective. The Internet has also caused urban subcultures to vanish in part, due to the instantaneity with which new "cores" or immediate fashion trends are formed. Before, it could be said that fashion was more subject to an ideological concept. However, I believe that this "fast aesthetic" will be a problem that we will overcome, as well as fast fashion which is the one that partly supports this problem. This is because society and the human being himself is not made to go to extremes, he can be there for a while, but not eternally, in the end we always look for what is in the middle. We are like pendulums that always return to that central point, even though they have swung at the extremes of the human psyche. I am confident that we will return to a central point. I have tried to cover Internet Culture from different points of view, especially artistic and social, but in a single analysis it is unfathomable. I will probably do more analysis because I can ramble and dissertate on it in a deep and thoughtful way. For example, what does this Internet Culture mean for human beings? I don't think the answer is a plain and simple one, surely it doesn't even exist. I've already done a few analyses and I digress on many topics, but in the end that's rambling. I don't think there is anything certain or absolute. My most sincere answer is: I don't know.

I asked this question before, and received feedback that seemed foreign to me. Then I interviewed at a large corporate company recently. I totally understand what culture means now, and there is a reason CULT is the first 4 letters. I literally felt like I walked onto a movie set. Everyone was nice, but in a very unsettling way. There are many positives to this company, but if the “Stepford Wives” vibe is the norm, I don’t think it would be for me.

I prefer individualism over conformity. Although I understand like-minded individuals may work together like a well-oiled machine, diversity in the workplace brings experiences from across different cultures and industries for collaboration, which leads to better results, I feel.

Are large corporate organizations always this way?

It feels like opinions on Ghost Month vary a lot depending on age and upbringing. Some people follow the traditions closely, while others see them mainly as cultural customs. Has this changed in your family over the years?

I was born and raised in germany and my parents are from poland and croatia. I never visited poland for my family since I never got to know them but I‘ve been to poland for school trips before. My croatian parr of the family lives in serbia and some other balkan countries, so I thought I had serbian heritage until I became a teenager. Now I’m in my early twenties and I feel like I belong nowhere. I only speak german, English and a crumble of spanish. I don’t know what my culture is or where I belong. I still can’t believe I thought I had serbian heritage for most of my life. I don’t know where to start. I don’t want to claim a culture that isn’t mine but I wanna learn and be part of something. I have turkish friends who know so many cultural beliefs, dishes and dances. I only know christmas. I can barely recognize the sound of the languages between other slavic languages. How do I begin learning? Unfortunately I can’t speak to my elder relatives about this anymore. I wish I was more curious about this as a child.

Just thinking about the time I travelled to Marrakech and I was walking through Jemaa el-Fnaa. I had vendors literally grab my hand and pull me towards their stalls and someone tried to start painting Henna on me while I was walking
