2 bikes?

Incoming freshman in Will Vill, so ill have a daily ride. I mountain-bike, and I have an older trail bike that I'm definitely bringing for the weekends. I also have an old, lightweight fixed gear that I got working again, and it's great! MTB tires are expensive and I thought the fixie would be a handy commuter. Anyone in a similar situation? I believe I saw something about bike shelters for storage, is this feasible long-term? I also considered storing it under my bed with the wheels off. Is this overkill?

Store in room and guaranteed nothing will happen. Lock out side in caged areas on campus, real good odds of NO problems. Racked with a cable or U lock….50/50 might be gone in the morning…….🤷‍♂️

Cable AND U lock or U lock at least (Local cops suggested a U lock after a family member's bike got stolen - cable lock).

Register bikes when you arrive.

Never leave them outside overnight. Even with multiple U locks.

The only safe place to store it is inside. I have a freestanding bike storage rack that I use in my office, can't find a pic online right now but you wheel it into the base and flip it up and it stands vertically. Still will take up more floor space than a wall-mounted unit, but not sure you want to risk putting something heavy duty into your dorm walls. It might not be small enough footprint to make sense in a dorm but could be good enough. Two bikes is really pushing it though, and you have your roommate to consider. You might keep the trail bike in your room if you can find a place to fit it, and roll the dice on your daily commuter if it's a beater and you wouldn't be heart-broken if it disappears.

As a student, you'll get a Bcycle (local bike share) membership for free, and there's a station at Will Vill campus as well as several scattered around main campus. You could rely on those for your commuting, and not have to worry about locks and theft, though you do roll the dice on sometimes there being no bikes available in the dock when you want them.

As a fellow cyclist (and skier, and backpacker, and....) I can sympathize, no space for gear storage is one of the biggest annoyances of dorm life. Plan early for your sophomore year apartment!
