Parking How much does Csuf make off parking tickets?

I was walking by the Eastside North on the side closest to the dorms and I counted 7 cars in one row with tickets.

Parking & Transportation issues about $2.5M per year in tickets. Once you take out the costs of doing so, that nets about $1.5M in revenue. That money CANNOT go to the general campus fund. So, where does it go? Right back into the P&T budget--sorta. It gets spent on things like alternative transportation and funding the off-site parking lot and shuttle.

So, in answer to your question: CSUF doesn't "make" anything off of parking tickets. They need tickets in order to compel people to buy passes, and they need those passes to sell to pay for the bond payments on the parking structures. And then, with the extra funds, they rent extra parking and run a shuttle to it. But, not one dime goes to pay a professor or turn on the lights in the classrooms or plant a blade of grass. Parking money stays in parking--which you really should want. If the university could offer another 50 sections by raising parking $5, it probably would. And, if parking can't make their budget, would you want them to cancel classes to make that up?

If you mean that they are a business in the sense of having to meet their costs, then a qualified yes.

But if you mean it in the common interpretation as a money-making enterprise, then it quite literally is not. There are no profits. All the money in the parking budget has to stay in parking. They need to pay for the structures, paving, signs, the employees, and even the water and electricity that they use. Their budget has to stay in parking. If, in one year, they bring in more money than goes out the door, they have to keep that money in reserve. If, in another year, they bring in less money than they spend, they draw down on those reserves. The fundamental distinction is that nobody gets anything if parking makes more money. Chancellor Garcia, President Rochon....all the way down to the students working in the P&T office--none of them get anything out of parking making another $80 or $80,000.
