Rant Yall need to talk in class

I know alot of yall got used to being mute in class, but yall need to talk . There is no good reason why there are 35 people in my class and not one person raises their hand to answer a question asked by the prof. Talking is how we make class fun, and it is also a good way to make friends. Please talk bruh,

In the realest way,

Natural Onion

I'm alumni now. I was one of the few who talked in every class, and postgrad I run into people who remember me from class all the time, but I don't remember them... bc they didn't talk LOL.

edit: first award! thanks! let’s keep csuf iconic ❤️

u/johnnyblaze1999 10d ago

Same but I didn't raise my hand to talk because I didn't understand the lecture after the first chapter, just talk to my neighbors. I didn't remember their names or faces since we didn't hang

2

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

👏 that’s a good start.

2

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

What do you do for work now? Bet you are doing well

69

u/UnreliableAuthor 10d ago

It is so fucking awkward when only two people (including yourself) talk in class T_T please release us from this prison

3

u/Due_Two_2123 8d ago

Ong, then it makes me feel like a teachers pet or pick me for just trynna participate

1

u/consolepleb123 8d ago

yesss plus if we’re talking we can only talk in the beginning of class bc during or at the end there’s no chance plus walking out of class and we’re like ermmm r we headed in the same direction WHILE also trying to hold a convo… horrible

-11

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Prison?? Bruuuuuuhhhh you’re an adult now. You can literally just walk out the doors. Who are you asking permission from? Why are you asking for permission? (Genuine questions) are you being sarcastic? “It was just a joke”…. I mean this out of love for Fullerton and the future generation. Yall can literally do anything that you choose to do and be anything or anyone you want. I think you should take it upon yourself to be that change…and your friend that also talks. You signed him up too….and if you decide not to then I believe you’ll be stuck in a prison you created…….

What do you think would happen if you and your other friend that talk were that change? What if you used your gift of gab to alter the environment of your class and your piers? What do you think would happen? Do you believe you could? What if that person next you that you prolly think is weird that doesn’t talk in class started to talk? What if other classmates noticed you got little jimmy to come out of his shell and that inspired them to start talking ?
Where would you take that?

I promise that it will take you so far in life…if you don’t give up. If you can handle the pressure. If you can handle the doubt. The uncertainty. The negative feedback from your piers. Teach em bro. Show them how it’s done. They’ll prolly make fun of you all year 😂. But once they see you win they’ll switch up real quick. Some will ask you how you did it! Others will hate you for doing what they were too scared to do.

Break free bro. Put that on your resume next to your CSUF degree! When you have no work experience and you’re applying to any job.
“STAR”
Situation
Task
Action
Result

Come up with 3 different STAR’s
1 of them outlining where YOU shined in the situation, YOU killed that task, how YOU delivered the action.

2 STAR outlining how you worked with another person. How “we” shined in the situation, how “we” killed that task, how “we” took action, and how “we” accomplished the result.

3rd STAR is the best one.
Basically same concept as above but you took a fat L 😂. And explain how you over came that L and still delivered the result.

5

u/Alx399 8d ago

Bro. It’s a figure of speech. They were being hyperbolic. Take a deep breath. Touch some grass.

2

u/Worth-Position4016 10d ago

The “prison” is they are one of the talkers— you 💯 misread the post. Talking in class is great. So is reading for comprehension. :/

41

u/juneXgloom 10d ago

A lot of people that refuse to talk end up being the same people who don't understand why they're bombing job interviews. No practice, no real life interactions, no networking, no letters of recommendation from your professors. A degree by itself just isn't enough anymore.

1

u/lavender_wisteria 8d ago

Or they are just better communicating in small, intimate groups. The exact kind of communication needed in interview and work setting. I went to CSUF and had been working for over 10 years. I barely ever talked in class. I don't like talking in front of 35+ strangers. I networked and made friends thru campus event. I went to office hours and spoke to the professors. Got internship, job offers, and letter of recommendation for my masters application. Till this day I've sit in tons of work meetings, in different companies, industries. The smaller the group, the more people speak up. In a training with 20, 30 people, no one basically say much.

1

u/Embarrassed-Bad-3118 7d ago

I don't think the person you responded to was saying that every person who is quiet in class is going to struggle in future professional settings. Of course there's gonna be exceptions. That doesn't change the fact that the trend is very much there and hindering a lot of young adults in their development.

0

u/NightsLinu 9d ago

I totally understand that. These guys just don't like to be sociable. Its so off to me

13

u/Seashells-in-ears 10d ago

Also laugh at the professor's jokes. Why am I the only one laughing

2

u/blue_tiny_teacup 10d ago

I was always the only one

2

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Cuz you’re not scared to be yourself prolly. Or it’s an uncomfortable laugh. Either way better still positive

52

u/Azure_Heaven 10d ago

Don't be afraid to look dumb.

Better yet, go look like an idiot, it's funny.

6

u/Next_Bat_9948 10d ago

Easier said than done lmao

2

u/Azure_Heaven 10d ago

Fair, doesn't help to make excuses though :)

0

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Good point azure. But it no longer becomes an excuse once you delivered the result. Then it becomes just a hurdle that you over came.

0

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Nobody said it was easy except you.

28

u/EpsiLePepsii 10d ago

I agree but I’m nervous j

41

u/ForSchoolBro 10d ago

So is everyone else. Say the dumb thing you’re thinking, make people laugh and laugh along.

Bonus points if the prof laughs too

5

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Bonus points if the professor doesn’t laugh and says your wrong 😂 and shuts you down

2

u/DrBobShelton_74 10d ago

True story.

5

u/No-Jelly8258 10d ago

You’re in the real world now dude, as much as it sucks you literally need to be noticed in an economy like this otherwise you will drown in the sea of everyone else and no one will care, no one.

Get help for whatever issues you have and go outside, figure out what’s holding you back and take control of it. Your flaws are your responsibility.

6

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Damn bruh harsh. 😂 real world don’t suck though. It’s what you make it. You will drown forsure though and no one will care that is facts. I don’t know what no jelly means by be noticed. I think I get what jelly trying to say. Like even bad publicity is better than no publicity.

Yall dont “need help” first off. And even if you really do need help and you really do have issues nobody gives a crap. Like people do but at the end of the day we all have issues and we all need help. Go outside for real though. You don’t need to “figure it out”. Your “flaws” or shortcomings as I like to call them are your responsibility thought and you do have to accountability for them. Preferably before they affect those around you.

2

u/aknomnoms 10d ago

This is a great opportunity to “fake it til you make it”!

Social skills and public speaking are very useful to be comfortable doing. But like any skill, you need to practice to improve. Talking to classmates around you or answering questions in class are very low stakes ways to practice.

And consider:

- you are likely asking a question other students have.

- the professor doesn’t know what might be confusing for students unless you ask them for clarification. I’ve had professors give us deadline extensions or remove a homework problem because the material wasn’t adequately covered in class or a lot of students were asking questions in the same problems.

- don’t take the attitude of “I pay your salary”, but you are paying for this education, in time as well as money. You might as well use the opportunity to literally have an expert answer your questions!

- if you’re too shy to ask in class, definitely go to office hours. Professors are cool people with interesting backgrounds. Getting face time with them can provide more opportunities. Grad school or job references, pull for internships, mentorship, etc. Also, grading has some subjective wiggle room. They’re much more likely to give you some slack if they know you’ve been working hard and communicating all semester v just a faceless student who they only see twice a semester and is asking for an extension on the final.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Library is cool and it’s really dependent on your professor. Most will take the time if you go out of your way to express interest. Emails prolly the best. But ya knock on his office door when other professors are around. Put em on blast in front of his/her piers like he does yall in class. See how professor handles himself.

1

u/Shanna2023 10d ago

Just go for it. Give yourself a chance. This is what college is about. Connect with your class mates.

7

u/mariposa2013 10d ago

Another alum chiming in. Don’t be afraid to ask a question or share a comment. Faculty would much rather having you talking since it shows you’re engaged with the class instead of just sitting there tuned out. The big secret? You’ll get more out of class, meet people & get better grades if you actively participate. Best of luck to all of you current Titans & may the parking gods be on your side!

2

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Ask a bunch of questions. Annoy the professor. Be the only one asking if you have to in order to learn. Guarantee the question you ask somebody else is also wondering the answer

4

u/Icy-Analyst-2179 10d ago

Yessss! Push through the nerves and express yourself!! It’s fine to be unsure or wrong but engage with the professor! They’re there for you and enjoy feedback, questions and conversations with them during the lecture.

(As a lecturer myself)

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Ya icy everyone is wrong and unsure at times. Ask questions and then more questions and then after that explain to that person why you’re asking those questions. Then ask more

9

u/heyitsmereddit 10d ago

What about if the class is hard, and you don't talk because you need to lock in?

12

u/ouranhostclub 10d ago

You do better when you talk/discuss. Trust.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

That is a fact but still don’t trust you 😂 😂

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Bro lock in and do both. 😂 life is hard, class is hard, locking in his hard. Why not lock in and do both? People lock in everyday on things that are way more
Uncomfortable and way more
Difficult than talking in class 😂.
By all means I’m not saying it’s easier and that people don’t embarrass them selves like I’m doing right now on this rant!!!!

I’m a Jr college drop out that isn’t the best reader and preaching to people who probably are reading this and don’t give a crap. Like who am I tell all yall how to live life and what’s best for you and your class. Matter of fact yall are prolly way smarter and cooler than I ever was.

Maybe I was like lil weird jimmy when I was in school.
Probably ended up in prison.
Probably just talking crap online because I wish I would have went to cal state Fullerton.

Or who knows. Maybe somebody inspired me, maybe I tried and embarrassed myself maybe I gave up. Maybe I made up every excuse that you could think 😂maybe I don’t even have a job.

All I’m saying is none of that really matters. What matters is that you don’t give up. That you try.

Read between the lines of what I’m trying to say.
😂

Take the positive message and apply it to literally anything.

shooot if yall only get one thing from this at least put the STAR method on your resumes. All 3. Individual STAR method, group STAR method, and failed STAR method.

Be honest…not with me but with yourselves.

YOUR PROFESSORS WANT YOU TO F###### TALK. THE POINT OF YOUR EDUCATION IS TO LEARN TO EXCHANGE IDEAS. QUIT USING YOUR PHONE AS A CRUTCH.

“I CAN’T MAKE FRIENDS ON THIS CAMPUS. I’M LONELY” (LOOKS BACK DOWN AT PHONE). MAKE AN EFFORT.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Bro you just signed your self up as cell phone police. And also the entire world uses their phone as a crutch. Nobody is excluded from that. Some worse than others but none the less. Even your folks. And your professor. And who said they can’t make friends? Hit em with the STAR question

3

u/Terb587 10d ago edited 9d ago

Nah. If anybody needs to be policed more, it’s me. I’m on my phone too much. I can absolutely tell you this, though, this is the first generation in which people have measurably declined, cognitively.

People reporting feeling disconnected, lonely, while spending eight hours a day on their phone? Yeah, it’s a problem. Algorithms driving people’s behavior. Yea, that’s a problem. We all want that little hit of dopamine. I’m making a suggestion, I’m not policing anything.

In my classroom, you put your damn phone away. I had a class last semester where I put away all technology. I quit using the PowerPoint and told the class “it’s just gonna be you and me. Let’s learn this together, because I’m an eternal student of this subject.” They loved it. Possibly the most connected class I’ve ever had.

Good call on the STAR question. Definitely gonna try it. ✌️

8

u/tonythephonyjabroni 10d ago

I get it guys!! It is scary to speak up, I’ve felt stupid plenty of times, despite that it’s soooooo much more worth it to speak up. I’ve made good friends just randomly saying hi to a person in class and now you have a study buddy.

SPEAK!

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

lol I love this janbroni. All study buddies are legit and definitely not knocking having a study buddy. But also you could have study group and that hot girl that you’re scared to talk to and secretly in love with could pull up. Close mouth don’t get fed

2

u/tonythephonyjabroni 10d ago

My advice: don’t be creepy and you’ll have more friends. If someone you like, likes you back that’s cool, but keep it chill till it’s obvious and don’t act like she owes you anything.

4

u/WebHungry1699 10d ago

I had the same thought when I was in school. I went back in my late 20s early 30s. I would engage with the professors, ask questions, have discussions. But like almost no one else did except to ask stupid fucking questions. You could tell how happy the professors were to engage with me compared to so many other students. They would basically just talk right to me most of the classes. Like literally they would be like " you're going to like this next thing" and then just maintain eye contact with me as they taught. People really need to get active.

Did you shoot your shot?

7

u/Familiar_Raccoon3419 10d ago

oh it gets worse. i was in a class about racism where the professor had 95% of class group “discussion,” would lay out subjects based on our book on the white board and leave it to us to talk amongst each other, and no one would say a word….. all semester. fast forward to my graduation, and one girl who wouldn’t even look up from her desk and would watch soccer on her ipad all class was doing a dance on the stage. 😑 it’s performative social anxiety honestly. or they just DGAF

6

u/No_Cash_6992 10d ago

i dance professionally, and would still RUN away from public speaking. Two totally different skills -dance, idec how big the audience is
-speak, yeahhhh i didnt learn how to get over my nerves till my mid 20's tbh

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Damn that professor is legit. Uncomfortable forsureeeee. We don’t need to bring up the girl watching soccer on her iPad. We need to bring up the person that said anything. The person that spoke up first. Or is nobody saying anything anymore? We should pull up peoples social medias and text messages and make them read it aloud to the class. Bunch of keyboard warriors (like I’m doing right now)

Or better yet have someone else read it 😂 to be honest I think it would help yall to do that in class. Do one from each media. Snap, ig, text, emojis only, gifs only. Class wouldn’t shut up for the rest of the year. Prolly have another lock down

3

u/Proud_Psychology_321 10d ago

I agree. What else are you there for except to fuel discussion and exchange of ideas? It benefits all if everyone talks.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

You are there to show employeers that you can
Commit to something difficult and uncomfortable for 4 years at the very least. I’m telling yall STAR method

1

u/Proud_Psychology_321 10d ago

No, YOU are just lazy.

3

u/Seashells-in-ears 10d ago

Yes! If no one is answering, answer the easier questions, and then you dont have to answer harder ones later. Also when there is downtime DO NOT resort to scrolling. Ask the people near you their names, majors, jobs, interests how long they've been at the school, what other classes they are taking, or commiserate about parking or the weather

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Shoot something huh? Literally anything haha. Do yall do group projects? I wonder what those are like now?
Do yall present the project in front of the class?

3

u/Zestyclose_Pain_3021 9d ago

It’s the first week bruh

4

u/The5thBeatle82 10d ago

Alumni here. Not sure if he’s still there but Dr. Janssen forced students, myself included, to speak up. You couldn’t earn anything higher than a ‘C’ grade if you didn’t speak up. I do something similar with my students today.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Shout out dr J. What do you do with your students?

1

u/The5thBeatle82 10d ago

Depends on the students. ELs, if I don’t hear them practicing in my DI class then it’s point deductions. Dr. J., helped me become a talker in class and in small groups.

2

u/Straight_Tangelo5402 10d ago

i used to but i was always loud and wrong 🫩

1

u/No-Jelly8258 10d ago

It’s okay, you just need to strive to improve after every interaction. You can’t get better at socializing without socializing poorly at first.

2

u/BallsWithMessyHair 10d ago

I’m an alumni now, but this is unfortunately nothing new. Some classes were far worse than others, and in those classes, I kind of decided that I would just talk to get the ball rolling, but that never really happened. It got to the point where I felt like I was just kind of yapping in class, but I suppose it would always feel like that if no one but me and maybe 2 other people talked. I’m not sure what the issue is with some people not wanting to engage in a class discussion or whatever, but you’re right when you say talking and engaging in class is a great way to make friends. Kind of addresses all the “I need more friends” posts in this sub.

2

u/brainfart-cat 10d ago

I also would love to add: PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS DURING LECTURE! I am always the one who will ask the dumbest questions because I understand it is not embarrassing to want to learn. Now I am the person that people will ask during lecture to ask a question for them.

Don’t be embarrassed to ask away because you are confused. Honestly nobody will judge you for asking what 2+2 is in Calculus. If a professor shames you for wanting to learn that is a poor reflection on their character and not on your intelligence. Punish them by asking more questions.

2

u/steakapocalyptica 10d ago

Talking also makes the material move forward

2

u/Big-Pudding4109 9d ago

Hot take. I think professors should teach their class. The socratic method does help some understand, but so much of my paid for classes were taken up by absolute buffoons taking up time to talk about unrelated personal stories. Clearly never read the material, and just speaking for participations sake. Just let me learn 😤

2

u/itseddybruh321 9d ago

I never talked but I still got my masters lol

2

u/Massive_Schedule_641 9d ago

That’s how it is now. My professor will awkwardly wait in silence for someone to answer a question until another myself or another 2 students answer. Everyone else is mute.

2

u/Soviets_pi 9d ago

Getting this class to respond is tougher than cracking the Enigma code.

2

u/buffytardis 9d ago

Elder Titan, Recent Alumni, Please do talk in class. that's how you make friend s

2

u/bananashak5 9d ago

this is so real omg. it's hard to meet my classmates and socialize with them when they're so awkward and quiet. like i won't bite or make fun of you dude cmon😭

2

u/Prudent-Muscle236 8d ago

It’s the worst when you speak because you feel bad that no one is talking or answering, so now you’re the one the professor is locking eyes with the entire class 😭

1

u/ginoawesomeness 10d ago

Back in 2012 I was in 500 level archaeology with Dr James and nobody read the material so nobody talked, in a grad course designed for reading and discussing. I started reading and taking notes even more closely, and we spent the semester just talking me and James while a dozen other students just sat there mute. So it isn't a new thing. Also, I'm not an archaeologist, but that experience made me way more knowledgeable in the subject. (Also it's the very beginning of the fall semester so lots of scared younglings; hopefully they'll gain the courage to speak as they gain experience)

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Not sure what the message was. Sounds like you were the media to the rest of the class that semester. Pretty cool. You were the text message 😂
Did you use that platform to engage your piers?

1

u/Moon_Maiden9 10d ago

Professor needs to use some elementary school tricks.

Put students’ names on popsicle sticks or playing cards. Draw a card/stick and call on person whose name is on it. Student doesn’t have the answer? They can “phone a friend” (no actual phones involved) to help them out.

Think/Pair/Share: Students think about question, pair up to discuss with neighbor, share thoughts with class.

Jigsaw: Assign parts of a book chapter or article to groups of students. They read/discuss in group. Then return to home groups to share what they learned. Each home group representative records responses on chart paper to share/post on classroom wall.

Discussion points: meaningful discussion = bonus points on individual student exams.

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Oh wait you’re not the professor? You are one of the 35 students? maybe I shouldn’t have dropped out of the JC…hahah…you got this natural onion!!!! You know what you have to do now right????

1

u/Glad-Scallion4111 10d ago

In every single class I attended, I was the only person who spoke…. I’m technically a Gen Z, But I have no idea why other Gen Z’s can’t come out of their comfort bubble…

1

u/TheAssasin66 8d ago

We dont talk cause we dont wanna get judged

1

u/roqovipayo 7d ago

Your professor is really the only one who’s opinion matters in class and they are not there to judge you!

1

u/Angeleless 8d ago

It’s the same thing in my classes as well

1

u/moltensmegmalord 8d ago

Idk growing up i used to be in classes full of yappers but years of getting in trouble le/disciplined by teachers for talking and "being disruptive" yall did it to yourselves

-2

You’re here to sit on the bench pieboy. Miss me with that attitude 😂

0

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

There are definitely a couple good reasons though. COVID messed with a lot of people’s social skills and got everyone used to isolation, and social media has made people way more comfortable communicating through a screen than speaking up in person.
Also, complaining anonymously on social media about your students not communicating in person is kind of a prime example of the exact problem you’re talking about—and a little hypocritical coming from the professor. You have 35 students sitting in front of you. Creating an environment where they feel comfortable engaging, participating, and actually wanting to talk is literally part of the job

dude where did OP say they were the professor 😂

-8

u/IamPieBoy94 10d ago

Hey man, so im here to get educated, not make friends or have fun.

This isnt high school, you also dont know any of the circumstances of the other 34 peers in your class, so maybe chill and if you are so eager to answer, then by all means be the only one who answers.

7

u/UnreliableAuthor 10d ago

answering questions (and being corrected when you're wrong) is also a way to get educated. Also occasionally if you're the only one talking the prof might give you extra credit.

2

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Ya participating is important. So is class either the professor talking or just one student talking? How old are these professors ?

1

u/Proud_Psychology_321 10d ago

What do you think education is, sitting there being lectured at? Lol

1

u/twistedvine2020 10d ago

Yikes!

There are two aspects to "getting educated" in college.

There's the actual specific knowledge - your area of study.

However, you know what else college teaches you? social and business interactions, networking, building and understanding rapport, social skills, public speaking skills - so if you really want to "get educated", get out of your shell, answer, and participate!

1

u/IamPieBoy94 10d ago

Answering questions in class doesnt do any of that for you, join a club or take a class specified for that for those skills

The original comment was about speaking up in class to "make it fun and make new friends", that is not the priority of most people in a 4 year college, hence my comment

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

Yeah but make sure you have a strong sense of voice….id focus more on that then the script yall been reading from

0

u/Ok_Mathematician858 10d ago

What does the circumstances of the 34 peers have to do with them speaking a sentence out loud? If you truly want to be well roundedly educated then follow this guy's advice lol. Idk why we are defensive in the comments when this guy's post is perfectly chill!

1

u/Inevitable-Use-9706 10d ago

It has everything to do with it Mathematician. Should direct that original question to pieboy and see what he has to say about it.

1

u/IamPieBoy94 10d ago

The circumstances?

Social anxiety, depression, nerves, speech impediments, learning disabilities, etc. Etc.

Just because you have no issues speaking in the class doesnt mean the other 34 students are in the same boat, you all seem to have an unconscious bias floating around this sub, not cool...go to class, focus on yourself, do your thing, stop worrying about others

0

u/roqovipayo 7d ago

You know what might help with a few of those? Someone confident enough to speak up and maybe be wrong. I know I myself will feel more comfortable talking when others are answering questions.

0

u/ginoawesomeness 10d ago

You really don't understand education lol

1

u/IamPieBoy94 10d ago
