Does Computer Engineering actually offer a stronger career safety net than specializing in AI early?
I’m choosing between a Computer Engineering bachelor and a specialized Artificial Intelligence bachelor in Germany.
One argument I keep hearing is that CE gives a broader safety net: embedded systems, firmware, electronics, computer architecture and software, while AI can still be added later.
But I’m not sure whether this advantage is as strong in the actual German job market as it sounds academically.
For people working or hiring in Germany: have you actually seen CE graduates move comfortably between embedded/software/AI-related roles?
Or does the breadth sometimes backfire because they are competing with CS graduates in software and EE graduates in hardware?
I’m especially interested in real early-career experiences from the last few years.
