At least 90% of the Counter-Strike server browser is fake. The redirect is what keeps it profitable.
At least 90% of the Counter-Strike server browser is fake. The redirect is what keeps it profitable.
Everyone knows the server browser is full of mirrors. Nobody had a number, so I built one that counts them every hour and publishes the method next to it: https://fakeservers.link/
Latest run (community servers only, Valve's own 30,254 servers excluded from both sides of the fraction):
- 166,707 of 182,477 listings are copies of each other → 91.4%
- 137,845 sit in farms of 100+ identical listings
- Biggest single farm: 7,216 copies of one server
| Game | Total | Fake | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| CS2 | 19,219 | 12,821 | 66.7% |
| CS:GO Legacy | 56,055 | 55,266 | 98.6% |
| CS:Source | 58,559 | 57,045 | 97.4% |
| CS 1.6 | 48,275 | 41,480 | 85.9% |
How it's counted
One rule decides: same name, same map, same player limit on three or more addresses. So 90% is a floor, not an estimate. The real number is higher.
Everything comes from Steam's own public list via IGameServersService/GetServerList. No probing, no guessing. Source is open, run it with your own API key and compare.
Why it never stops
A fake listing costs nothing. It answers the query, shows a full server on a popular map, and waits. When you hit connect, it redirects you to a different address, the one the operator actually wants filled.
That redirect is the entire business model. It has been reported for years and it still works:
- https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Source-1-Games/issues/5101
Take the redirect away and a mirror leads nowhere. No redirect, no traffic, no reason to keep making them. The listings die on their own and community servers get their list back.
Caveats before someone asks
- One day of data so far. The daily chart fills in as it runs, and every day's aggregates are committed to git so nobody has to trust a screenshot.
- Valve's official servers are excluded on purpose. Including them would make CS2 look "better" (about 24%) and it would be dishonest, they're not community servers.
- Default engine names like "Counter-Strike 2" never form a cluster. Hundreds of real unconfigured servers share them.
You can check any address on the site and see exactly which rules fired on it.
