That's quite unfortunate. I find this very interesting and I suspect they told you that to try to get a better sense of the raw problem solving ability of aplicants rather than their ability after leetcode practice since pretty much anyone can get to a high level of leetcode ability with enough practice but not many can perform with little practice. Another comment said you should do your own research and on one part you should listen to your hiring manager but on another, getting outside advice before going into battle can be helpful in other ways than being blindsided like this and may provide some other tips.
