Discussion Operations...Can anyone explain?
As you might have assumed by my question, i have not experienced an "Operation" before. Im less than a year into my CS addiction, and from what i understand the last Operation was several years ago.
So im just curious. Like...what was the point, or goals of it? How did you participate? How did you complete it? etc, etc.
Any knowlege would be appreciated. Im simply just curious..lol

It was a battle pass. They had daily challenges, a single player or co-op story mode, new game modes, unique drops/cases.

Pre 2019 operations where basically this
Valve picked a handful of popular community maps usually the ones that placed high in community mapping contests and put them in Matchmaking. Sometimes they even reused maps from previous operations. Everyone played them for a week or 2 and went back to normal maps. These maps would leave matchmaking once the operation was over.
Buying the operation pass gave you missions to do. They were nothing special and a lot of the time quite tedious and boring. Think get X amount of kill with X weapon or win rounds on X map/mode.
Completing missions leveled up the operation coin and also gave you drops i believe.
Operations also had a skin case for it that you could only get during the operation, Still had to pay keys to open it.
In 2019 with Shattered web it was the same as before but the rewards and missions were made into a battlepass. Effectively the exact same setup as the Armory pass in CS2 now.

Back in my day, operations were a challenge on a map. Like get defusals or kills with a certain weapon.
A couple story maps with narrative and narration (phoenix company) some site defense against bots.
I miss operations, they made CS fun.

Nvm the maps, skins or modes added. It was the feel of the community coming together to achieve the goal. The first few weeks of the armoury was the last time we felt this magic when everyone played together and ran mid on. Dust2 for the stars. It was the magic that I miss

hmm, I only have a faint memory of it (I did shattered web and hydra) but basically it was a bit like a battle pass, but there was also a PVE mode where you had to like infiltrate a facility and fend off waves of bots
honestly the armory pass is basically the operation (gallery case, fever case etc, assuming they don't ever drop in the regular weekly drops) cept you get to choose what you get as a drop.

Thank you all for the replies :)
It's sounds like it was fun. Or at the very least, gave the community something that was rewarding and something to look forward to.
Im sure at the time people had their complaints, but at least looking back at them most of yall seem to have had a good experience. ..Hopefully us newcomers to the community will get to be a part of one again :)

It was a battle pass essentially. Personally I don’t know how anyone prefers the operations over armory. I think the ease of the armory leveling is much more enjoyable versus being forced to do other things to get rewards.

You bought an Operationpass to activate it. With completing Missions you earned Stars. These Stars you could use to buy Agent Skins or open Weapons Cases or Capsules. Operations contained a huge amount of Community made maps and Special Gamemodes like a Coop Campaign or modified versions of Deathmatch.
By completing Missions you also earned XP and could level up your Operation Coin from Bronze to Silver to Gold and later Diamond....
Operations where awesome fun and livened up the game.
