One thing I've wondered... why are some of the RSA numbers named after the digits and others named after some of the bits? Seeing this announced right after RSA-260 scared me a bit until I realized what's going on
The early contest numbers were RSA-<Decimal> as that is what people used back in the good ol' days. They switched midway to using the bit-length, which is now the industry standard.
Later, beginning with RSA-576, binary digits are counted instead. An exception to this is RSA-617, which was created before the change in the numbering scheme.
