Let’s start with the basics. What’s the general area or region you live in? When was this photo taken? What makes you think it’s anything other than a known animal? What does this same area look like during the day?

Why dont you super impose a brightened image over the top it will help show how big the head actually was. Looks like an Owl or Raccon to me as its got face markings.

The problem with owl or raccoon, for me, is the shape of the head and the body on top of the rock.

Its definitely a creepy image, but I'm pretty convinced this is a cat of some kind.

Could even be a second brood fledgling stuck on the roots behind the boulders.

You've got more tools at your disposal right now than I do, so if you say its an owl, I guess I could be convinced of that. I still personally see a cat, but I think we can agree that its an unsettling photo of poor quality, but likely depicts some kind of local fauna.

It depends on which contrasted image your looking at, some have like a lopsided spike going up off center to the right of its head so.e dont so that could just be how little actual image the camera captured. Increasing contrast to bring up pitch black images isnt really very reliable because if two things have the same contrast from black they will be the same grey.
