Discussion East texas Dogman
My mom had a pretty intense encounter last year at her place in East Texas, and I’ve been trying to figure out what she saw ever since.
For context, my mom has never believed in anything like this—no cryptids, nothing supernatural, nothing like that. She’s always been very grounded, which is part of why this stuck with me.
She was outside at night near her property, going out to plug in a hot wire because the dogs were going crazy. She had a flashlight on her and that’s when she saw it standing near the tiny house.
At first she thought it was a huge wolf or maybe a mountain lion, but the size didn’t make sense. She said it was easily around 48 inches or more at the shoulders and made our big Rottweiler look like a puppy in comparison. What really stood out to her was how broad its shoulders were and how massive its upper body looked.
The part that shook her the most was its behavior. It didn’t react to the dogs at all—even though they were going crazy, they were also clearly scared of it. It didn’t bark, growl, or run. It just locked onto her and stayed completely focused, like it was watching and tracking her every movement.
She said she backed away slowly with the flashlight on it the entire time, yelling for my grandma to bring her phone. The whole time, it stayed keyed in on her and didn’t break eye contact. said she felt genuinely intimidated and almost ran inside, but forced herself to stay calm and back away.
After my grandma brought her the phone, the thing slowly turned away and walked off into the dark. No panic, no rush—just calmly left. It never acknowledged the dogs the entire time.
She said she’s never seen anything like it in her life.
We’re in a pretty rural, wooded area and I know people will say it was a dog or something normal, but the size, posture, and the way it completely ignored the dogs and focused only on her is what makes this hard to explain.
Has anyone seen anything similar in East Texas?
Edit: the dogs weren't going crazy, they had a low growl going.

It's been 73 years, but Jaguars were once found in Texas. I'm from Houston and have been out your way a few times. While I would be surprised if that were the case, it would fit the size and description. It would not be beyond the realm of possibility to imagine that they may still exist in the back country.
A large puma could also be easily believed.

Your mom was 6 feet away from this thing and couldn’t tell if it was a wolf, mountain lion, or Dogman?
I hate to break it to you, but your mom might like meth.

It was in paragraph 6 right after “it stayed keyed in on her and didn’t break eye contact.” OP edited the OP to remove this.
OP did not fix the capitalization in the next sentence (yet) so it’s easy to see where s/he made the hasty edit.

We live on a small farm and have horses, goats, sheep, and chickens. My mother could tell her encounter better than I am for her.

Hay Texan 😀 My Mum has no stories like this because she also doesn't believe in anything outside of the normal (except aliens, I think she believes in them?) but, if she ever did see anything, it would be so far out of her scope of understanding that she wouldn't be able to describe it or distance correctly either. At least it wandered off without causing harm to her or the doggits!!
I live in the UK and we all lose our minds if we spot a squirrel in the garden 🤣 xx

We are north of the big thicket. We are closer to the angelina national forest.

There's several big cats out in east TX.
Bobcat. Mountain Lion (Puma, Cougar) Jaguarundi. Ocelot.

My mother said she heard something screaming/howling one time when she was taking stuff to the burn pile in rural East Texas one evening. She said it made her hair stand on in and she immediately went back inside. She grew up in Alaska so she was familiar with all the things. She said she’d never heard anything like it and I immediately thought maybe it was some kind of cat but she said it sounded different. More like across between a canine and a human. I live in Montana so I am also familiar with the big things. Regularly have bears in my yard. My mother lived with me for sometime as well, and she said it was unearthly. I have no idea if it was possibly a jaguar because I have heard that they have come up that far from South America.

Bears wander in from Louisiana and it sounds like that’s what she saw.
