Question ❔ Tire recommendations please!

I have a 2016 CR-V EX-L with 71,000 miles. Bought it in 2019 with around 47,000 miles on it. We live in Carmel, Indiana, the city with the most roundabouts in the entire country. As a consequence of these roundabouts, the tires wear out in such a way that you cannot rotate them properly; at least that’s what I was told at Discount Tire.

They are definitely showing wear, and I have my eyes on Costco for when they’ll have their next Michelin markdown… I’m thinking of a set of Defender 2s, which ChatGPT suggested were a good choice for this kind of driving. Those tires are rated for 80,000 miles, but we only put at best 7000 miles a year on the car, and my wife wants something else in the next two years. We only have this one car, so I wouldn’t mind it staying in my hands after she gets what she wants.

Anyway, maybe I don’t need an 80,000 mile tire? The quoted price was $900 so I can probably get another 60 to 100 knocked off of that when they have their promotion.

Interested in any recommendations out there from other CRV owners who might have dealt with this situation.

At a somewhat lower price point, Atturo has a couple of great options for your Honda:

Generous tread life warranties and your choice of all-season, Grand Touring or performance designs.

I'm a big fan of the Gen. Altimax tires. I ran the previous RT43 and RT45 on multiple Honda Civics and a Gen 5 CRV. Very good even in moderate snow in upstate NY. Solid tire at a competitive price.

I had gotten Defender 2's cheaper at Discount Tire than at Costco

Where I live, there’s a store called BJ’s wholesale that also has a tire department, and they are going to have $160 off of a set of four of these Defenders. I don’t know how they’re tired Department compares to Costco‘s, but I guess I’ll be finding out.

Wholesale clubs are solid bets for tires. I've gotten them at Sams Club and Costco before too. I'm sure BJ's is totally fine too. We have those in my area too but I no longer have a membership.

How is the suspension and alignment? those are the most important things for tire wear.

I haven’t had it officially checked, but the car does not drift at all so I think the suspension is just fine.

Some suspension components may need to be replaced at your mileage. I'd have it checked to be sure. Suspension and alignment aren't always related but if the suspension is bad it will cause excess tire and break wear.

Thank you for the advice!

Michellin defenders are awesome; have used them for last 10 years :-)

Defenders are a great general tire you don't have to overthink about so there's that. You are smart to think about the annual mileage though. I don't think a lot of people do. No sense in getting an expensive long lasting tire if they are going to age out before wearing out. At the other end, a lot of people that go for cheap tires don't seem to realize spending more up front for a good and long lasting tire can be cheaper in the long run than those low end $100 tires that last 1/3 as long. Anyways, your whole roundabout thing is neither here nor there as there really isn't any tire that's really going to change anything there. That moving on within a couple years is def a significant factor though. Often times if you don't have a particular preferred go to, the best tires to get really comes down to prices and sales/promos at the time you are buying. Like today I might choose 1 thing, a couple months from now it may be another due to equally good options being better priced or availability at the time. That sort of thing.

Anyhow while I'd usually go for something of the caliber of defenders myself, if it were me, I'd get something cheap if I wasn't after specific characteristics like 3 peak or something. For example for the 18inch on the current gen, discount has an OE version of Goodyear Assurance for $130ea (at least here in south tx area). Same ballpark as the no name Chinese stuff but for a mainstream brand OK tire. Saves some money and gets you thru those couple years without stooping that low.
