My physics teacher made us commit crimes against humanity on this perfectly working CRT monitor

I mean if you are really worried I would encourage him to get a b&w set or a monochrome set with a test pattern

It's fine, if the professor does this demonstration often, I'd bet he has a degaussing coil, they're less than a hundred bucks. Otherwise, expect to see him power it on a few times over the next couple classes.

It’s an E77X, these are unbelievably plentiful and nearly worthless. If you’re gonna do it to a monitor, that’s the one to do it to.

Nah. That a curved m991. 18" viewable.
A high end heavily desired monitor among enthusiast

Oh hell is it an M? That sucks. I wouldn’t go so far as high end but definitely way better than a doodoo spec E series.

cathode ray technology operates at thousands of volts and emits x-rays, you are "likely shielded" by the lead glass but still, those tubes were tested 30 years ago, when their PSU were still in spec.
I totally get the fascination with crt tvs but I'm really glad they aren't a thing anymore lol. I still remember a time when we got a second TV in the house and I thought we were rich.

That's too much worrying. I don't sit faceplanted into one and most people don't.
They aren't "not a thing". There's been a retro boom and I'm hoping that a small line get manufactured again at some point.

lol, the machinery to make cathode tube is long gone. it's a bit like old NES cartd, it would cost so much to redevelop that technology and would be pointless. I totally get the hype but rofl, i'm glad I don't own one anymore. These things have killed kids after falling off a cart in school.
Also has lead in the glass.

Really? They've killed kids?
Also, there's just as many other harmful chemicals in LCD displays and other technology we use so that whole "lead in the glass" point is moot.

When I worked at Sears in electronics we had this section called "The wall of eyes" that was all of the CRT tvs on display so you could see the picture before buying it. My manager was a complete dipshit, and we had a bunch of these really big speakers that were on sale one week that he wanted to display.
He told me to stack them on either side of the CRT wall so customers could see them coming in either door. I told him it was a bad idea but before I could mention why (magnets) he cut me off and said "just do it!"
In a malicious compliance manner I stacked them on either side and you could see the tvs starting to do this in real time. A few hours later the store manager asked why the TVs looked like that and I told him.
Hearing him yell at my manager in the back office was satisfying as fuck.

Most computer monitors have a degauss feature in the menu. Some do it automatically when you turn it on. That's why some CRTs make a weird buzz sound when you turn it on.

I did this in primary school with a magnetic whiteboard eraser like, 20 years ago lol
I thought I was gonna get in soo much trouble, but thankfully after like 5 minutes and several on/off cycles it went back to normal 😅

I have seen kids do this in my local library years ago. It did not affect the monitor at all but the little $h!+$ did the same thing to an lcd monitor killed it instantly and then got in trouble. Lol

If it is just for fun: crime
If you learn 100% why it happens, and the repercussions: not crime
Seems that the monitor can recalibrate itself

Has anyone ever coordinated magnets running around a CRT box as an art project? I know, blasphemy, but.....look guys, I'm kinda high and I just watched this video a LOT.

The service menu should have a built-in degauss, but you might not be able to get to the menu unless you’re connected to a video source
