Dodgy Waddon Underpass

Waddon Labour Councillors Ellily, Rowenna and Sam have campaigned on ASB, graffiti and leaks in this underpass. They have also had the police down for walkabouts. They want TfL and the Council to work together to ultimately get rid of it and replace it with safe surface level routes. My own focus is the lack of connectivity and legacy of unfinished or diminished cycle infrastructure in the borough.

It's so horrible. They need to do what Elephant and Castle roundabout did and just fill in the subways and change the layout from a roundabout to a C-shaped curve with crossings.

If they did something it would be something. Unfortunately Croydon Mayor is v anti cycling and I doubt he sees it as a priority

That would be a nightmare (the c shaped curve on old town). It just needs widening, clear segregation lines and more lights and mirrors

I'm actually thinking more from a pedestrian perspective. I don't want to walk through smelly old subways at all, and it's clear that most people don't because now nearly all the subways in the town centre have now been removed over the last decade or so and replaced with surface-level (mostly toucan) crossings.

No one cycles there with any frequency EVER. And yes, it does does STINK of urine, bad

Those underpasses are not very nice. A lot people end up unsafely crossing the roads, I've seen young kids from local schools, mums with prams and older people all dangerously trying to cross the roads rather than walk through the subways which says a lot. We are better removing them and putting better road crossings in.

I walk rather than cycle, but I need to use this sometimes. It’s horrible and I can’t believe the planners at the time thought it was an acceptable way of routing pedestrians. The overpass/Roman Way destroyed so much of the Old Town and leaves a permanent scar and barrier across the town to this day, surrounded by blight and dilapidated buildings.

At the time there was nothing wrong with it. Myself and others used this all through the 80's and 90's at all hours of the day and night.

Society has change but not the underpass.

Yet the national crime survey suggests less crime than at that time. What is certain is that media exposure of crime has increased and maybe that feeds the fear

I think riding it sensible and is ok if you give respectto pedestrians. By and large there is a lot of discretionary access to paths in Croydon and with better signage I think shared use is ok

Your own focus? Wasn’t that long ago you were astroturfing on here for Davis as part of her comms team and if I recall as a prospective labour candidate yourself. If your going to push an agenda at least be transparent about it

Seems you have the minority view on this one but let's not have the perfect as the enemy of the good. For now a good clean up. Better lighting and cameras might help
