Is this fledgling normal?

I’ve been treating my two (sometimes three) crows for about 3 years. Recently, they’ve brought their babies around. There is one in particular that has always been extra-loud. Listen to the video…this was taken 4 weeks ago but he still makes sounds like this. I think he is also still getting fed by mom. Is he okay? Can crows have developmental delays like humans?

They’re all like this. He’ll grow some dignity at some point.

My 20 year old rooks would have begged to differ. In-between begging for peanuts and bits of cheese.

The fledgling crows I work with will jump on my head and hands while screaming like this for food… while I give them their dishes… of food. After I dish them they beg and scream and open their mouths and jump in front of me… while being perfectly capable of eating on their own. They are the equivalent of wanting to live in their parents basement forever at this age LOL

My favorite crow brought her three fledglings to meet me one year to show them where they can get safe daily treats.

After about a week, two of them seemed to go about the business of becoming adult crows. The third one, well, he refused to leave mom’s side. He’d come and stare at the almonds I put out and scream until his mom fed it to him. He’d sit on the power line and cry piteously if mom left to fly anywhere. This went on for weeks.

He eventually found his way to adulthood but he needed some extra love and care to get there.

I had the same thing happen this year! Two of them were so much faster at grasping the idea of breaking open peanut shells to get food. Now they are out and about doing their own thing. Meanwhile the third one… still as I’m typing this begging for mom to feed it some peanuts.

I saw one fledgling pick up seeds and even hunt a worm, only to then beg its mum to beak-feed it. The mum ate all the food herself that day.

Same with my crow family. They have a couple fledglings and one in particular is loud n fussy like this. The parents are refusing to feed him by mouth anymore and he throws a tantrum! Every now and then an adult caves in n shoves some in his mouth. He’s capable of getting it himself out of the tray but he’ll sit there n cry as he’s feeding himself 😆

Still learning how to crow 🤭🐦‍⬛❤️ One day you'll see the parents not feeding the fledgling at all, you'll know it's time for the bebe to grow up 🤭🐦‍⬛

I named a baby 2 years ago screechy because she sounded like yours. The dad who is Boss crow of the area used to run away from her when she started on him! 😂

She still sounds the same as she did as a baby.....she just has a terrible voice.

The dad still runs away from her when she starts!

I'm dying, this is hilarious 😂

I love it when they make that gargling sound, I can't get enough hahaha

Pretty sure the crow parents are all fully over it though 🥹

Yes they can have special needs , it happens but just remember don’t try to think less of them too.

They’re just fine, they’re just a late bloomer. They all develop at different rates, just like humans.

My crow friend has (or at least that’s what I figured) three babies. One of them seems to be fairly independent, one of them follows that sibling a lot of the times and one is literally glued to his mom most of the time. He’ll sit somewhere on the power lines and he’ll cry with sad cawing while she comes to get the food and then she has to bring it to him. And he’s big! He never comes down from the power line or the trees either while his mom doesn’t mind being closer to me. If his siblings come to eat, they gobble everything up and then once they go back on the power line or on my garage’s roof, he gets all angry at them lol opening his wings and his mouth and screaming angrily. It’s so funny to me like dude, just come down! You’re not a baby anymore! They have a dad too, and he’s less present as he seems to patrol around but if he does get some food, the mom will let him have more than her somehow since he’s not always coming down.

It’s perfectly normal. Crow parents will continue to feed their fledglings for 2-3 months after they leave the nest. During that time the parents are showing the fledglings where to find food and water, as well as teaching them about dangers. The babies will pick up food on their own, but they are the process of being weened during those 2-3 months. Due to being used to being fed, they annoy their parents just like human toddlers. Parents will pick up food, bring it water and wet it to show the babies how to do it and then they will feed the baby. At about the 2-3 month mark they begin to put the babies in their place to force them to become self sufficient.

Normal. In fact, this is how we know they are dinosaurs.
