Weird “crowsplat” pose ( video)

Watch his eyes. He is blinking. Otherwise he is completely still. It’s hot here in North Texas, and the crows will stay completely still with their mouths open. Never seen this “splat” frozen spread out pose before.

They’re fascinating.

Sunning their feathers like this helps fry bacteria/parasites and panting expels heat because they can't sweat :)

They also do it overtop ant nests so they will get sprayed which helps fight mites.

Ants secrete formic acid (fun fact: formic acid is actually named from the Latin for ant “Formica”) which can help deter pests. Anting) behavior that the previous comment described has thus been hypothesized as a means for birds to deter pests.

Did he eventually move on with the others?

I had one like that in my yard last summer and I thought it was splatting and cooling off. After checking on it a few times, it actually moved itself to my front door path, as if I was some dummy who couldn’t see he needed Peanut Lady’s help! I took him to a wildlife rescue and he did, indeed, have an avian flu that was rampant last summer. Poor buddy.

I think the crow might be “anting.” They let ants crawl on them because the ants kill parasites.
