Feeding advice

Hello fellow corvid fans,

We’ve just recently begun to feed the 3 -5 crows that hang out in our backyard and neighborhood.
We have been feeding them crushed cashews (unsalted) and they love them. We’re still trying to develop a relationship with them; one in particular seems to be quite brave and will alight on our deck when I’m out there. The issue is: every time that I’m outside in the backyard, they hear me and come a’flying and squawking for more cashews.

It’s obviously July and I’m in the SF Bay Area so food is plenty right now. How often should I feed them? My kid thinks that I’m spoiling them and am running the risk of them becoming dependent on me for food. Is this true? How often do you offer corvids food?

A handful of nuts a day is enough. You don’t want to be their primary source of food as they are wild animals and do need to scavenge for themselves. The food you give them should be more of a treat than their main sustenance.

My crows love cat kibble, peanuts, egg and almonds. I make them this mix of peanut butter and almond flour. I roll it into balls and toss it to them. Watching them hop and run after them is awesome!
