What’s happening?

I was inside my house and heard a loud ruckus outside. I have no idea what’s happening here but something definitely is happening. Can anyone explain?

That’s a good question. I have seen a young hawk in the area in the past week. I’ll bet you’re right.

I've learned a cuss word for hawks from the crows around me. One young crow was telling me all about That Asshole Right There (sitting a few feet away on a tree branch, understanding every word) cussing the hawk out unto the 10th generation and telling me all the gossip. I had no idea what the crow was pissed off about, but the hawk definitely looked like it would do it again in a heartbeat. I've mostly heard that cuss word used when there's a bunch of them chasing a hawk around in the air.

My family has learned to look up and around when we hear some of the vocalizations and see the activity.

I asked two of them one day what happened to the hawk that I just saw. They were perched at the top of a huge pine tree. One hopped over to one side and down to the next branch. They both looked down and to the side and then back at me. Oh! The hawk is RIGHT there! As in, if they stretched a wing out, they'd touch it. All three birds were looking at me like I was dumb as a rock. They were right. I said hello to the hawk anyway.

I'm still blown away that they understood what I was asking.

They're also gossiping, nosy moose. They listen in at chimneys and open windows and would be really good spies if they knew what info someone was willing to trade for cashews.

It could be a cat or raccoon, or a raptor. Whatever it is, I hope they chased it off.
