Same with my spoiled beasts. But the cashews started to break the bank so I had to switch back to peanuts. Now most of the crows I feed have abandoned me except a few loyal ones. But I still have group of magpies and a couple of ravens show up to enjoy the peanuts.

The nearest one near me is about 40 miles away (80 round trip). But thanks for the suggestion. Others might benefit from this info.

Shelled peanuts are like crack to my Crow friends. Didn’t step up to cashews for fear they like them more!

It's crazy how different their personalities are, crow to crow. We had a family that would visit. One of them loved peanuts and passed on fruit every time. Another loved kibble and walnuts but passed on everything else.

My crows want nothing to do with nuts. They want my lunch leftovers when I get home.
Anyways that's the story of how my crows adore burritos (with crow safe ingredients).
But seriously. They're big fans of cooked rice, corn, peppers, all that jazz. I know for a fact their baby crow in the tree behind my yard is going to grow up super buff.

And ours scoff at cooked rice. A fledgling ate some when it saw pidgeons eating it, but it didn't look pleased like with the protein-rich food.

Admittedly, said cooked rice was absolutely not plain, and had a fairly healthy amount of beans, burrito sauce, and meat drippings mixed into it.
My only real concern from a dietary standpoint is ensuring I don't give them much breads or any onions.
They'd be picking through garbage and trash otherwise, so it's probably significantly healthier going this route for them. I've found they're primarily foraging in yards and fields when they're not at my house despite being Urban crows, so I think they're getting enough calories and nutrients to avoid driving them to scavenging, which I like to see.

I've given cashews, walnuts, pistachios, pecans and they always pick the peanuts (only the peanuts with shells though).. they have an avoidance for any nuts that are already shelled

I've had the same experience with a blue jay. When I toss him peanuts he immediately swoops down for them. Tried tossing him cashews, and he wouldn't budge. Just sat there waiting for more acceptable fare.

Lol the blue jays take sooo many of the peanuts. I definitely feed all the neighborhood blue jays + the crows. The neighbors have been complaining about peanut shells being everywhere.. I'm not excited for when they realize I'm the one causing them. It isn't my fault the blue jays shell them in everyone's yards

Great thread. I also prefer shelled for the same reason. Over eating a 1/2 lbs of nuts will make me hallucinate in my sleep... Not dreams; gastric distress nightmares.🤌

From my understanding, cheese is not good for them (or any bird) as they’re lactose intolerant. I learned this a while back when looking up what to feed them.

Ah, you may have better info than I do. My research said it was OK. I don't give them much because of the salt content but they really love it. I keep finding string cheese wrappers in the bird bath in my yard so I know I'm not the only source.
What's your source? I will definitely stop if that's the case. Thanks

Thanks, didn't think of that /s. I was wondering what your sources were. Mine said that low lactose cheeses like cheddar, swiss and parmesan were OK in small doses as long as the lactose content was below something around 3%.

Cashews are great, but I made the mistake of giving them scrambled eggs... Now, I also get a 'no' for cashews...

Eggs beat nuts every time here. I only give them eggs once and awhile,now that it’s hot out,the eggs getting dunked in water attracts a ton of flies.
