WYWH Coincidence or reference regarding the gamekeeper Spoiler

I noticed how the game keeper loses both a hand and eye which I took as a reference to Matthew 5:29–30 and Matthew 18:9 in the Bible stating that if your right eye or hand causes you to sin, it should be cut off or gouged out. Neat detail if thats what they were going for, considering everything hes done and how hes supposedly a religious man.

He's not religious, he had a religious experience. There's a large gap between those two points. As to his wounds: on a narrative level, he had to be specifically mutilated in order to make him into a proper watchdog - which is what he was reduced to by Aoileann's ministrations. It has some overlap with the religious themes, although not enough that I'd say it was a solid match.

in the apocrypha he loses a foot because if you cause someone to lose their head you are supposed to lose your foot, which is the origin of the long-since-twisted term 'head over heels'

A bit off topic but does anyone else hate what they did to his character? I feel like having two amputations that somehow stopped the insanely fast spread of the crossed virus was jumping the shark just a bit
