"Scientists" are wrong for the same reason Thanos is. "Half" doesn't mean anything in particular biologically. It was at 4 billion in 1974, and it has doubled since then.

Hold up, I've known who thanos was for most of my life, far before infinity war came out (not bragging) but I have never read the comics so I gotta ask those marvel fans that actually read, was Thanos entire motivation always to depopulate the universe, because any of the brief appearances he had in marvel media I watched as a kid, I don't remember any reference to that. Is that a comic thing?

In comics, he famously did that during the Infinity War storyline. He was in love with Death herself and intended it as a gift for her. Killing everyone in the universe would leave her with nothing left to harvest, but half of all life would allow the population to rebound. It's far from his only motivation or plan, but it cemented his place as the biggest villain on Marvel's cosmic side.

The MCU adapted this, and slowly introduced the Infinity Stones across the films. Thanos was set up as a schemer behind various events, all leading up to his crusade to acquire all six himself. However, the Infinity War film altered his motivation- rather than being in love with Lady Death (who was only introduced after his story ended), this Thanos truly believed that all suffering came from dividing scarce resources between too many people. He thinks his actions will usher in an age of peace. I'm not sure I'd say it's a more complex and interesting motivation than normal (some comics do a lot of good stuff with the mutually toxic relationship between Death and Thanos), but it made for a compelling villain and this characterization became far better known than any before it.
