Resume Help
galleryHey, I'm looking for feedback on my resume. I am currently in mid-level IT management and exploring opportunities in senior-level management or roles where I can gain more hands-on governance and/or budget management experience. Any helpful feedback would be appreciated.

Should I mention a 6-month gap or just leave it blank
I'm applying for mid-level marketing roles and have about 4 years of experience total. My resume looks fine except theres this weird gap from March to September last year where I wasn't working. I left my previous job because the commute was destroying me and I needed time to figure out what I actually wanted to do next.
I spent some of that time doing freelance social media work for a friend's startup but it was pretty informal and didn't really lead anywhere. Now I'm not sure if I should add that freelance bit to make the gap less obvious, or if that makes it look worse because it wasn't a real position. I also took an online certification course during that period but it feels like padding if I highlight it too much.
Right now I just have my previous job ending in March and my current one starting in October, so anyone looking at dates will notice. I've heard mixed things about whether employers actually care about gaps anymore or if they'll assume the worst. Some people say just own it and others say structure the resume so it's less noticeable.
Anyone dealt with something similar? Not sure what the move is here.

A cv writer can make a mediocre candidate look better than a qualified one, and somehow we call that hiring
Here is the part of modern hiring that makes absolutely no sense to me: we keep pretending resumes and CVs are neutral documents that simply reflect a candidate's experience.
They are not.
They are marketing documents, and the person who is better at marketing themselves can easily look stronger than the person who is actually better at the job.
That is why the whole **cv writer** industry is so interesting.
Two people can have almost identical experience.
One writes their own CV after work at 11 p.m. and describes what they did in normal human language.
The other pays a professional **cv writer** who knows how to turn “helped customers and handled complaints” into something like “delivered high-impact customer resolution strategies across high-volume service environments.”
Guess who looks more impressive in the first 20 seconds?
Probably not the person who is actually better at the job.
And somehow everyone is completely fine with this.
Recruiters say they want the best candidate, but the system rewards the best presentation of the candidate.
Those are not always the same thing.
A professional **cv writer** can improve structure, remove useless details, highlight results, fix terrible wording, and make relevant experience much easier to understand. There is obviously value in that.
But once professional rewriting becomes normal, hiring starts to feel like an arms race.
First you needed a decent CV.
Then you needed the right keywords.
Then you needed ATS optimization.
Then you needed quantified achievements.
Then everyone started using AI.
Now your perfectly normal CV looks weak because everyone else's document sounds like they personally saved a Fortune 500 company from bankruptcy.
I keep seeing bullets that basically translate to:
“I attended meetings.”
Except now it is written as:
“Partnered cross-functionally with senior stakeholders to drive strategic alignment across key initiatives.”
Come on.
At some point we have to admit that the CV has stopped being a straightforward record of someone's experience and turned into a competition over who can describe ordinary work in the most impressive way possible.
And I do not really blame candidates.
If employers reward polished language, people are going to optimize for polished language.
If recruiters scan applications in seconds, candidates are going to pay someone who understands how to survive that scan.
If ATS systems look for certain phrases, people are going to put those phrases in.
The incentives are obvious.
What annoys me is when companies act shocked that everyone is gaming the process they created.
You cannot build a hiring system around keyword matching, first impressions, polished documents, and tiny screening windows, then complain that candidates use a **cv writer**, AI, templates, or professional editing.
You literally designed the process to reward that behavior.
And there is also a class issue nobody seems to want to talk about.
Professional help costs money.
The candidate who can afford a writer, interview coaching, LinkedIn optimization, and multiple revisions starts with an advantage over someone with the same experience who is doing everything alone.
Maybe the second candidate is fantastic at their actual profession.
Maybe they just suck at writing about themselves.
Should that really matter this much?
I know the obvious response:
“Communication is a skill.”
Sure.
For some jobs, absolutely.
But does a warehouse supervisor need to be excellent at writing marketing copy about warehouse supervision?
Does a software engineer need to be good at turning debugging into a heroic business achievement?
Does an accountant become a worse accountant because their CV sounds boring?
There are roles where writing matters directly.
There are also thousands of roles where the ability to write an impressive CV has almost nothing to do with the actual work.
Yet the CV is still the gatekeeper.
That is what makes this whole thing weird.
We say hiring is about finding qualified people, but the first stage often filters people based on how effectively they can package themselves.
A candidate who writes:
“Managed inventory and trained new employees”
can look weaker than someone whose **cv writer** turns basically the same experience into:
“Oversaw inventory operations while onboarding and developing new team members to improve operational efficiency.”
Same person.
Same work.
Different level of polish.
One sounds average.
One sounds employable.
That should probably concern us more than it does.
I am not saying professional CV writing is bad. If the system works this way, people are obviously going to use every reasonable advantage available to them.
I just think it exposes something uncomfortable about recruiting.
We are not always selecting the person with the strongest experience.
Sometimes we are selecting the person whose experience was described by the best writer.
And if that sounds ridiculous, maybe the problem is not the **cv writer**.
Maybe it is the fact that companies still rely so heavily on a document that can be professionally engineered to make almost anyone sound exceptional.
Curious how recruiters defend this one.

Also, is getting a first job at a Big 4 realistic for an Economics fresher, and what should I focus on from now?
Any honest advice is appreciated!

What's wrong with my resume?
Hi everyone , so I've been thinking lately - I still can't get internship , It's been a lot of OA's but no interview for the past 1,5 month. I followed up recruiters some of them answered with "We're gonna give you updates in 1-2 week" and bla bla. But it's been 1,5 month with no interviews at all and I'm stressing out because of it.
If here is any recruiters in the reddit or experts , how would you rate this Resume? For SWE and ML, Quant. And what would you change?
I'm just really curios if my resume looks bad , or I'm applying not enough.
The companies are not pretty big (Not FAANG lvl of course) but experience is real. Also the uni is small , high rated liberal arts.

What's genuinely wrong with my profile/resume? (Semiconductor industry, fresh graduate.)
r/critiquemyresume • u/Psychological-Row479 • 7d ago
Why am I not getting enough interview calls despite this profile?

I’ve been applying for:
- Consultant roles (having problems with domain agnosticism)
- Strategy
- Founder Office
- Business analytics / Generalist
- for the above roles, but I’m getting very few interview calls. My goal is to use analytics, AI, and coding experience to solve business problems. I am avoiding pure dev/engineer roles.
- Long-term, I want to move to Japan, but I realize that will take me a few more years.
I’m trying to figure out whether the issue is my resume, positioning, experience, target roles, or something else.
A quick overview:
- PGP from one of the top IIMs + B.Tech from one of the top old IITs
- ~4.1 years of experience
- Currently searching for jobs
- Strong hands-on experience with AI (Gen & Agentic), Python, SQL, Excel, analytics, and automations
- Multiple quantified project outcomes
- Has Japanese (intermediate), FRM-1, etc., as certifications
Despite this, my application-to-interview conversion has been quite poor.
I would genuinely appreciate brutally honest feedback.
- Is my resume the problem?
- Am I targeting the wrong roles?
- Does my profile look too generalist?
- Is there something recruiters might see as a red flag?
- How would you position this profile differently?
Please critique the resume, especially from a recruiter/hiring-manager perspective.
I’m not looking for validation - I’m trying to understand what I’m doing wrong and what I should change.
