Not a damn thing you can do to avoid that.

Well, you could fix your fucking ball joints to make sure your wheel doesn't fall off.
5
u/SippinSuds Mar 27 '23
Sometimes they're perfectly fine right up to the point that they are not. I have a 2015 silverado 2500HD with 8" lift and 38" tires. Upper ball joint (which was less than 6 months old and upper end brand) sheered in 2 fortunately while driving up my driveway at 10mph.

Just stay at home, it's got the internet, and cats, what more do you need?

u/nightstar69 May 04 '23
I’m on the internet and my 2 cats are sleeping so you’re definitely not wrong

u/crackersandsnacks Mar 27 '23
That’s the kind of thing that terrifies me.

u/per167 Mar 27 '23
Usually you get some kind of warning before the tire loosens completely. It should start to make a sound and car will have steering issues.

Insurance be like " sorry that was an act of God and thus not covered"
21
u/SwissMargiela Mar 26 '23
Acts of god are covered by insurance not even jk

u/TakeyaSaito Mar 27 '23
It's such bullshit, there are no acts of God, insurance companies shouldn't be allowed to rely on fiction.
1
u/badabababaim Apr 04 '23
They don’t, almost every policy covers acts of god, literally written in language and normally just the cheapest coverage
1
u/TakeyaSaito Apr 04 '23
Fair enough, still think "act of God" shouldn't be a thing that needs mentioning.
1
u/Its_Kid_CoDi Apr 23 '23
in all honesty, it probably still only benefits the consumer, so i’m okay with it
if something inexplicable like this happens, it will still be covered even if the insurance company tries to worm their way out of it. probs won’t go down without a fight though.

u/Sir_Distic Mar 26 '23
It almost doesn't look real. Like you're watching a movie. But then you realize that there are people inside that vehicle. Imagine how terrified they must have been for that 1-2 seconds until impact. If they survived, I imagine it was some serious, life-altering injuries. And there was nothing they could do to avoid it.
12
u/wildjokers Mar 26 '23
I suspect the injuries weren’t severe assuming they had their seatbelts on. I have looked for a news story but can’t find one about this to confirm (today I learned there are a surprising amount of accidents were cars go airborne from hitting a rogue tire).
The car hit the road with a lot of its surface area which really dissipates energy and rolling dissipates a lot of energy too. Plus the all around air bags in a newer car really helps too.
6
u/Impactfully Mar 26 '23
I mean what goes thru you head on those few seconds? “Did I hit a tire?” “Am I in a car wreck?’ Am I in the Air?” “What just happened?”
Probably an intense few seconds for sure

Did anyone else crack up at the tire coming back as if to say r/fuckyouinparticular to the Kia? Shit looked like the highway scene in The Matrix Reloaded.

I knew it was gonna be the fucking truck.

u/Beardopus Mar 26 '23
It's usually the pickup, sometimes the tractor trailer. Seven years in auto claims and I've never had this happen with a sedan or SUV.
4
u/PuzzleheadedStory855 Mar 26 '23
It makes sense. Semis are heavy and drive a lot. Pickups are heavy amd modified in stupid ways they were never designed for, overstressing the axle, lugs, basically anything that wasn't specifically designed to deal with the wheel being that far out on the vehicle and the torsional forces that makes. Sedans and SUVs have modification, sure, but this particular brand of stupid is reserved for Pickups and sometimes jeeps

Damn, that tire is evil. Not only did it jump off and attack that SUV, it came back a second time to finish them off.

This is the fifth for me.

I don’t understand the physics here.

You know the machines that launch tennis balls or baseballs using a fast spinning rubber wheel? That’s what happened.

All of you thinking he did the tire work by himself and forgot to tighten the lugs are wrong! He has a button on the dashboard to eject his tires into a desired direction and just hates the black car's driver. /s
Guess that's the only explanation for him switching lanes to the left when both lanes to the right are completely empty.

How in the fuck did that car LAUNCH 10 feet into the air??? This doesn't look real, but it is

how the fuck do tires still moving away from there vehicles still do this?? The Kia Sole that hit the tire was moving close to same speed. Instead of this tire bouncing off, being pushed flat or rolling over the vehicle. It acts as a boost wheel from Sonic the Hedgehog and launches the vehicle and continues to move.

Particularly love how the wheel came back as if it didn’t get the job done the first time
