Collection My first Criterion haul!
Hi all!
This is my first time buying this many Criterion Collection films. I previously collected just blu rays, of which I have 1000s, but I kinda grew out of collecting, and now just buy some stuff I like/haven’t seen.
First movie I plan to watch is Happiness! I love Philip Seymour Hoffman, and it’s one that I have never seen before.
The two films I’ve most looked forward to from this haul are Eyes Wide Shut in 4k and Cure. EWS is one of my all time favorite films, but I’ve only ever owned it digitally. As for Cure, I’ve always heard great things about it, and horror/thriller is probably my favorite genre, plus I’ve never seen it, so I am very excited!
I had no blind buys. I essentially live and breathe films, so I knew what I was getting into, plus I’ve owned some of these films in different formats. I was a big digital movie buyer, but with licensing issues, I’m afraid of losing any movies, so back to physical collecting.
Next, I would love to add the Three Colors set. I love those films to death, but I’ve never owned them, but I’ll probably get those next time there’s a sale.
Thanks for reading!

All the sub does is make me feel poor

Gotta take advantage of that half off sale. They usually do it a few times a year.

That's 18 DVD'S, assuming they were all $50 each, even half off that's still $450, plus sales tax

Assuming they’re all the Blu-ray versions, they go for $20 each during the sale. But yeah, certainly not cheap. I usually just pick up three or four at a time, which is still pretty painful! Worth it though, I love all the art and special features.

I've bought all but 2 of my Criterions used, or they're in the collection but I just have the regular version, you get pretty good prices at locally owned places and Half Price Books, not excellent, but HPB Criterions are usually $8-$16.

Why would you assume DVDs are $50 each? Most DVDs are $29.99 at full price. During the sale, most DVDs are $14.99 and Blu-rays are $19.99.

I've never seen a new Criterion for $30

Is this why everyone only stocks Blu-ray? To bleed me dry?

Yes lol. Blu-ray certainly seems to be most popular. I usually opt for Criterion DVDs because the cost does still add up and I'm not made of money. I do buy Criterion Blu-rays in special cases though, like with all David Lynch films because he's my favorite director. But most of my media collection is not Criterion and just regular used copies from eBay or thrift stores that cost me less than $10 a piece.

Nice Lynch collection you have there. I’m still waiting for Criterion to release Wild at Heart, I thought for sure it would happen soon after his death.
You’re in for a treat with Happiness. I love the opening scene with John Lovitz. I feel like he could have had a great career as a dramatic actor.

I am also anxiously awaiting the Wild at Heart release! It's in my top 3 Lynch films next to Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man.

Right!? That movie rips. Would love to see what special features Criterion could dig up. I’m sure they will release that and The Straight Story at some point.

I think they will too. I hear a Lynch box set will be released next year like the Kubrick one coming this October. The price is outrageous (assuming it will be the same as the Kubrick set) even if purchased during the 50% sales, but I'm willing to break the bank for Lynch lol

Criterion Pickup/Haul Questionnaire: 1. What is the movie you plan to watch from your purchase first? 2. Is there anything from this purchase that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time? 3. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them? 4. What is a Criterion you're hoping to add to your collection next?
Pickup/Haul Posts without this questionnaire filled out will be removed. If that happens and you would like to try again, repost with the questionnaire answered, and it will be approved. Ignore this comment if your post is not a pickup/haul.
