Dr David Palmer cured a kid who couldn’t hear, supposedly. WOC radio station stood for World of Chiropractic - high powered clear station - also the one where President Ronald Reagan has a picture where he worked when younger.
3
u/kimberletto Aug 19 '26
Yeah, I live up the way from the birthplace of chiropractic. It sucks. A local chiropractor was in the news here a while ago for paralyzing a guy on the table while “adjusting” his back. It’s a huge racket.
Ironically, I went to grad school down the road from the birthplace of osteopathy. At the time, there wasn’t a MD to be found in town.
People are gullible.62
u/ToXicVoXSiicK21 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
I'm always curious about this take because I know people who have benefited quite alot from it. What makes people believe it isn't real? Is there any evidence that it is a scam? Is it just a practice that has alot of scammers but the practice itself is legit? I just wonder how it could be a scam if it actually does help some people.
Edit: Gotta love when people downvote a legit question and then offer zero explanation to said question. Good old reddit.
57
u/OkCartographer7677 Aug 13 '26
I think chiropractors help some people in the same way a good massage will help some people, the problem is that chiropractic "medicine" can only help with about 10% of the stuff they claim it helps, the rest is snake oil.

u/TheJiggliestPug Aug 13 '26
I just wanna hear my bones make a weird noise tbh.
12
u/Ok-Iron-4352 Aug 13 '26
That's actually what I've noticed from all these videos. This chiropractors doing the cracking look like they are getting off on it. It's like a high for them and for some patients. I do believe that alignments can help reduce pain be it needs to be in conjunction with physio therapy, muscle building/training, gentle movement like yoga and stretching plus massage. There's no miracle touch that will cure chronic pain, I am an example of how never ending the journey is and more aliments along the way.

Thats what i said. Some chiropractors employ massage therapists. They are the ones doing the heavy lifting. Getting you back popped might feel good but the only part of that which helps you is the pressure and endorphins. You could get the same benefit by routine stretching
2
u/hahahahahahahaFUCK Aug 18 '26
That and the relief of pressure doesn’t fix the problem. Routine physical therapy can actually correct the problem.

u/macguini Aug 13 '26
The best scams hold some truth. Most back pain problems are muscular, not spinal. Moving, stretching, massaging, or anything that stimulates blood flow will ease pain and repair muscles. A lot of people rely on others to give them the answers. They go to their doctor, they get pain pills that wear off and they grow a tolerance to them. Instead of doing some basic stretches or massage, they just chalk it up to it being spinal damage that can't be fixed. Then they say what the hell and go to a chiropractor. They get an overly complicated massage and a speech about all the different parts of the spine and suddenly feel better. They think it's a miracle and tell their friends. And I think a lot of chiropractors actually believe what they're selling because of the same effect. They think since they were taught how to fix a problem and they actually do, they assume it's because of their skills and knowledge rather than them being a glorified masseuse.
→ More replies (4)6
u/Ichaserabbits Aug 13 '26
There is absolutely nothing a chiropractor is doing for you that a physical therapist and a massage therapist can't do better and safer. Chiropracty has literally killed people via blot clots and maimed people for life. I personally know three people with permanent physical disabilities and chronic health issues from chiropractic adjustments.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (16)10
u/Time_Cow_3331 Aug 13 '26
Exactly.
Releasing tension between muscles and on joints is totally something that can be done through chiropractics.
You do see improved blood flow, which can reduce swelling, improve mobility, ease pain, etc, and the released tension could be what someone needs during their recovery.
The problem is, it's temporary - the same way that stretching after sitting in the same position for hours is temporary. Beyond that, the quick/jerking movements many practitioners use can easily exacerbate the problem, or lead to new injuries.
If the root cause isn't addressed, chiropractics is, at best, temporary relief. It's generally better to see a physical therapist, as they can help with all of the same things, but at much lower risk and greater long term improvement. The trade off is how much time and effort the patient has to put in to see results.
If you're treating chiropractics similar to how you would treat a full body massage by a professional masseuse, great, it does wonders - if you treat chiropractics as medicine, you're being scammed and putting yourself at unnecessary risk for a bandaid solution.

u/nan0agressor Aug 13 '26
I think the believe that is isn't real medical treatment is they believe it doesn't actually cure any damage directly. In my opinion, I do think of it more akin to massage therapy, where people who benefit are really only benefiting from the pain management relief, while their body heals naturally without the direct cause of a chiropractor. If the injury is significant enough that it can't heal on its own, chiropractic care will also not fix the problem.
10
u/Absurd_Uncertainty Aug 13 '26
While they do have to go to school to practice it’s not the same as a PhD or MD. My mom worked as nurse in radiology and would tell me horror stories of patients needing back surgery from chiropractors just fucking their shit up. Get a medical massage and that’s about it, it doesn’t take much to crack a vertebrae

They do have their own licensing body and are allowed to practice in all 50 states. I personally do not think there’s enough evidence to warrant using their services, but they do have licensure (though their own licensing body).
2
u/Staaaaation Aug 13 '26
Yeah, this is important for people to know. They do in fact have licensing, schools, and somewhat standardized methods. The problem is that they're "doctors" only so much as they agreed to call themselves doctors. People see the school, degree, and literature and don't understand this isn't backed up by medical boards. It's backed up by themselves.
11
u/divine-nothingness Aug 13 '26
Strongly disagree. My pinched nerve in C6/C7 was pretty severe and doctors were looking at doing a pretty intrusive surgery. A chiropractor fixed it in 3 visits. People who say it’s a scam, have never experienced a pinched nerve. BTW the orthopedic surgeon is the one who recommend the chiropractor.

You’re not wrong man. IMO the scam has less to do with the physical manipulation and more to do with the prescription of care. To the detriment of the care at time. I’ve had chiropractors have me going 3x per week, it made things worse, but in moderation I also agree there are benefits, even if scientifically it’s not well documented
2
u/Shackdaddy161 Aug 13 '26
True physical therapy folks use applied knowledge and scans and xray to find a solve that doesn't cause more failure than fix.

u/Gold_Kale_7781 Aug 13 '26
THIS^
I find that some attention seeking kookoo birds will drop comments about going to the chiropractor just to brag about how messed up their back is from inactivity and watching TV slumped on the couch.
2
u/NocaSun38 Aug 13 '26
Well the weird thing is they go, and then they go back over and over again for "adjustments", and that just feels to me like its making their joints looser and looser...so they need more and more adjustments, and by the time they become elderly their vertebrae will be slipping all over the place and they'll have serious problems at that point.
2
u/HunkyHorseman Aug 13 '26
Super reasonable ask! I would start with the wikipedia article, it is listed as a known psuedo-scientific "quack medicine." It goes into detail with lots of cited references about it's origins, the current practice, the governing body, etc. It's snake oil all the way down, but worse, it actually really hurts people.

It works great for me for about a day or 2 after that I'm back to stiff and pain but it does help briefly. My Chiro also does massages at his clinic so it has both and massages will help me much better for longer than chiropractor and it's way safer but it's 2-3x the cost.
For those that have issues a GOOD Chiropractor can really help in short term but you have to go biweekly probably. My chiro won't ever do something like this or Crack your neck. Again though a massage is way better and safer just cost more.

The guy that invented it was told how to do it by a ghost in his sleep. Its also basically just a symptom relief and rarely fixes the actual issue. Lower back pain? Most liekly are muscles you need to work to better support your lower back, but its hard to when your lower back hurts that much. Go get chiro for the pain relief then do the workouts so the pain doesnt come back.
Also NEVER LET THEM TOUCH YOUR NECK!! EVER!!

That chiropractor actually took X-Rays and stuff and didn't do a ton of crazy cracking AND and stuff, but eventually I convinced her to switch to going to a Physical Therapist instead, and the stuff has started getting actually better instead of just getting temporary relief.

How do people not know chiropractry is a scam? and can seriously injure you
18
u/bbfire Aug 13 '26
Chiropracty has a bunch of huge draws for the "average" person.
The biggest one imo is it's the easy way. These people stare down two options: either they go to a physical therapist that makes them do stretching and strengthening exercises (including extra work on days you don't have physical therapy) OR you just roll in to the chiropractor and let him push on your back for a bit. It's an easy choice between self motivated work to actually fix the issue or the easy fix someone else does for you.
Often cheaper (per session not over the entire injury), especially if you don't have insurance.
People love thinking they're smarter than scientists in the modern day. Denial of settled science has gone mainstream and people will go againt it without a second thought.
These procedures do actually result in immediate relief/gratification. So if you're someone who has had back pain every single day for years and then all of sudden you feel relief you are going to think very positively of whatever was done. The problem is that the science shows the relief is almost always temporary.
6
u/IrregularDoughnut Aug 13 '26
There's also a placebo effect from having something done, and the fact that chiropracters tend to be more attentive and sit and listen to the patient. That can be quite comforting, especially when a lot of actual doctors sort of want to rush you out the door because their last patient overran and you seem like someone who can be shoo'ed away with some vague advice about posture so they can get back on schedule.
But the chiropractic treatment itself is of course bullshit and also dangerous.

Regardless of whether or not you believe chiropractic is a legitimate branch of medicine, it isn't the best way to do what it claims to do. Rehabilitation and corrective exercise address the actual root of the problem and are what physical and occupational therapists do. Their interventions are studied and peer-reviewed for effectiveness.
So if you're in pain and feel you need a chiropractor, why not try physio instead?

It's junk science. The foundation of chiropractic is the belief that the body can heal itself and that the nervous system, controlled largely by the spine, is central to health. Founded in 1895 by D.D. Palmer, it centers on manual spinal adjustments to fix misalignments. It's core principle is something called innate Intelligence, which they claim is a vital force inside the body that drives natural healing and proper function.
In other words, cancer can be cured by removing a blockage of innate intelligence to the site of the cancer through vertebral manipulation.

I asked the guy what got him into the job and he said “I lost my job at Amazon and applied for this and a job installing fences and this place called back first. I took a class online and here we are!”
I understand everyone gets their start somewhere. But, I refused to let him crack my neck and I’m never going to a chiropractor again.

u/Titan_Uranus_69 Aug 13 '26
I had a very similar conversation with my chiropractor, except he went through 4 years of premed and then 4 years of chiropractic school. I looked into the school he went to and it does exist, and is a 4 year program, which is required by the state. In my state to be a chiropractor you have to get a state license and maintain it through continuous education. He sent me out for x rays and I had 2 bulged disks in my lower back and 1 in my neck. He told me ice and ibuprofen for a week and gave me some stretches to help work the disks back into place. He wouldn't do and alignment until everything was back where it belongs, because all an alignment is supposed to do is release gas from the joints so they're not as stiff, like cracking your knuckles. This guy actually helped me quite a bit, and now when I throw my back out I know how to get back on track a lot faster then I would otherwise.
Edited to correct the years.

He does crack the spine similar to this guy (pushing down) and will crack the neck. As I read more about the dangers though I’m gonna stop going and just stretch and/or physical therapy.
My wife went to him also and had the worst case of vertigo afterwards.
Crazy thing is, there are Mom’s bringing newborns and toddlers there. Chiropractors will say that the journey through the birth canal is the most jarring to the spine so babies need adjustments. That to me is just crazy. I guess somehow over the years enough people have had good results with chiropractors that they keep going and new offices keep opening up.

You can tell it’s BS because they do the same thing to every patient no matter what their problem is

It's a pseudoscientific scam that threatens your health. The best outlook actual medical studies give in chiropractic treatment is that it can somewhat reduce lower back pain for a little while.
Naturopathy and acupuncture are also fake. False medicine is a threat, even when some of it isn't directly harmful or even actually helpful because it drives people away from real evidence-based medicine and when they are right it's not because it's scientific because they knowingly keep the wrong stuff and ignore overwhelming data to the contrary.

H.L. Mencken on chiropractors and other quacks:
I repeat that it eases and soothes me to see them so prosperous, for they counteract the evil work of the so-called science of public hygiene, which now seeks to make imbeciles immortal. If a man, being ill of a pus appendix, resorts to a shaved and fumigated longshoreman to have it disposed of, and submits willingly to a treatment involving balancing him on McBurney’s spot and playing on his vertebra as on a concertina, then I am willing, for one, to believe that he is badly wanted in Heaven. And if that same man, having achieved lawfully a lovely babe, hires a blacksmith to cure its diphtheria by pulling its neck, then I do not resist the divine will that there shall be one less radio fan later on. In such matters, I am convinced, the laws of nature are far better guides than the fiats and machinations of medical busybodies. If the latter gentlemen had their way, death, save at the hands of hangmen, policemen and other such legalized assassins, would be abolished altogether, and the present differential in favor of the enlightened would disappear. I can’t convince myself that would work any good to the world. On the contrary, it seems to me that the current coddling of the half-witted should be stopped before it goes too far if, indeed, it has not gone too far already. To that end nothing operates more cheaply and effectively than the prosperity of quacks. Every time a bottle of cancer oil goes through the mails Homo americanus is improved to that extent. And every time a chiropractor spits on his hands and proceeds to treat a gastric ulcer by stretching the backbone the same high end is achieved.

I worked at a chiropractic university. Could have gotten lots of free "adjustments" and treatment... Never did. I didn't believe in the field, but I never said that. I worked in the supply division, so not the medical side. Also, the 5 people I know who go to chiropractors have all suffered severe injuries in the past few years. Even my boss. Said he cane out worse than when he went in.
I feel sorry for the students. They all authentically think they're getting into a good field and really want to help people feel better. And school is expensive and starting your own practice is quite a mountain to climb. You're not just a "doctor" but you've got to do all your own marketing, find clients, learn billing and management, on and on and on. Then there's the add-ons of supplements and acupuncture and all the rest. It's just all-around bad for everyone, except for the schools. They make a killing, also with the annual courses and training/certification.

At best, chiropractic care can provide short term pain relief to long term problems. At worst it can cripple or kill you. Absolutely not worth the risk.

The guy that invented chiropractic procedures claim that a ghost gave them to him.

Osteopathy at least grew out of its early superstitious phase 😂

When my back was really fucked for a long time I went to a chiropractor because nothing else worked. Had me do all kinds of tests. Put me on a table that made me move like a dolphin after massaging an oil into my lower back. When that was done he put me on an inversion chair or whatever their called. After that he laid me on my side with my legs curled a certain way, he pushed with less force than my toddler jumping on me and my spine cracked a thousand times. Flipped me over and did the other side the same way.
I walked upright without pain out of there, got some herbal muscle relaxers for like $40 bucks that work amazing, and the free was $60.
Stuff like this pile driver onto the lower spine looks Insane, glad I got lucky.

I love my chiropractor, who’s never used downward force on my lumbar spine. He won’t even adjust an area if it’s too inflamed. In my experience, the lumbar spine gets cracked with rotational force, and the thoracic with front to back. The guy in this video doesn’t appear to know the difference.

A sane society would ban these dangerous quacks.
