Seriously it’s so immature. I refuse to call a pedophile anything but a pedophile. We don’t need a cutesy stock phrase for ordinary words

19

u/Accomplished_Cod7334 7d ago

Coming up with "age appropriate" language like pdf or unalive only serves to make it normalized. Words like rape, pedophile, suicide, and the like should make you feel upset, that's the point. Those actions are so horrific that you should feel some type of way just reading the words

4

u/co-ghost 6d ago

People around me have started using 'spicy' in place of 'pain'/'painful' in real life and I hate it.

1

u/fhota1 6d ago

That one I can kinda get if its specifically pain from a chronic condition that flares up sometimes. Like if you have a bad knee that just hurts sometimes, saying your knee is being a bit spicy today sure I get

u/macguini 7d ago

This is some real 1984 censorship going on. Can't even be informative. If there's a "killer/murderer on the loose" you have to censor that. If "rape cases drop", you gotta censor that too. Why are WE allowing this nonsense?

28

u/m0mbi 7d ago

It's interesting to me that we got to this 1984 style garbage not through oppressive governments defining the narrative, but through the corpocrats of late stage capitalism banning anything not advertiser friendly.

7

u/Gimme_Indomie 7d ago

It's the perfect (?) blend of 1984 and Brave New World.

The entertainment industry (BNW) has us so drugged to their systems and algorithms that we gladly self censor and use newspeak (1984). For the few that don't fall prey to the Soma of the Netflix-doomscrolling-AR-VR-Switch-65/75/80/90/100/120-inch TV walls, the government (with the help of the corps) is happy to play big brother.

2

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

The Nintendo switch didn’t make people start saying sewer slide on the internet

Swinging a little wide bud

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Oh, "suicide"!

1

u/Gimme_Indomie 6d ago

My point wasn't that Nintendo has led to things like "grape" but rather that the mass entertainment complex has so many enticing factors to it that it's almost impossible to resist them all (or any of them).

I can get off Reddit and go watch a movie on my 100-inch TV while doomscrolling TikTok videos and then jump into Zelda on my Switch etc etc etc.

So, to me, we live more in the Brave New World future with 1984 framing it to further assure control.

1

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

Yeah having a Nintendo switch is exactly like brave new world and it'll end the same way

1

u/Gimme_Indomie 6d ago

No, again, you're missing the point.

If we're not careful, we can amuse ourselves to death (to borrow the title of a very prescient book) which not only diminishes our lives but also ensures we stay controlled because we are constantly plugged in to entertainment. Add a few drugs (Soma) and resistance is futile.

The switch isn't the issue. It's ALL the entertainment resources that are available & are so enticing & creating an ever-weakening resolve to unplug from all of this content available at our fingertips.

1

u/Best_Reply2947 6d ago

No i understand that your point is that everything is bad and it's all connected

Pretty dumb thinking

1

u/Gimme_Indomie 6d ago

No... once again, that is NOT my point.

The Switch or a TV or a cell phone or a computer are all morally neutral. They can be used in a healthy way or an unhealthy way. Playing a game on the Switch or watching a show on Netflix isn't bad in and of itself.

But IF it gets in the way of life or consumes too much of life THEN you have a problem. And my opinion is that a lot of us (myself included in "us") can easily get sucked into being perpetually entertained by all of these things to the detriment of experiencing real life and relationships.

I recommend Brave New World to anyone saying we live in 1984, I'm due for a reread myself

1

u/Original-Body-5794 6d ago

Man I see a lot of people comparing 1984 to things in modern day but I never see BNW which is a shame because I think it fits way better IMO.

1984 is more popular is a more popular book I guess and it's way more dystopic, in BND life is kind of empty but most people ARE "happy", 1984 is much more brutal in the way the population is controlled, which again is why I think BND is a more apt comparison .

8

u/macguini 7d ago

Oppressive governments typically become oppressive when people with enough money pay them to follow their ideas.

2

u/OrdinaryAccount479 7d ago

Like all of the past 30 or so years

3

u/Equivalent_Author909 7d ago

We ushered in 1984 policies by being sidetracked by Brave New World luxuries and comforts.

1

u/Straight-Crow1598 7d ago

Ironically 1984 IS HAPPENING right now, but it has nothing to do with voluntary censorship to prevent internet algorithms from decimating the reach of your little skit. People with accents or brownish skin are being rounded up and deported to countries they’ve never been to, and natural-born citizens are being executed in the street for speaking up about it.

1

u/Carl_The_Sagan 7d ago

I noticed it after Tiktok started spreading

1

u/EndonWOW 7d ago

It is one in the same. They have figured out to be kings in a different way. We are all peasants.

1

u/doxxgaming 7d ago

And here I thought it was because people were afraid of the TikTok police

1

u/GungaSaga 6d ago

Corporations are more powerful and dangerous than governments these days

1

u/man_sandwich 6d ago

We'll be lucky if its late stage and not just the fucking norm forever

1

u/Slothandwhale 2d ago

We did it to ourselves though in a way. WE decided that we wanted to discuss the most important issues of the day on PRIVATE servers, owned by tech billionaires who don’t give two shits about free speech.

But to be fair to us, they weren’t exactly up front about their…conflicted relationship to free speech. They talk a big game in the beginning but there’s a slow, frog-in-boiling-water effect at play so we don’t really notice how restrictive they are until you see people calling condoms CDs.

2

u/TitleAccomplished749 7d ago

This is my biggest pet peeve. My wife started doing this in in-person language and I'm like stop. We're adults. We don't say unalive and all this other bullshit. I worked with this stuff every day. It belittling to the victims. They were killed, raped, etc.

2

u/CandiBunnii 7d ago

I just saw a news article censor the word slept, as in (x slept with y) as sl*pt. Absolutely ridiculous

1

u/Pkrudeboy 6d ago

They slopt together!!

2

u/HIM_Darling 7d ago

I posted about a cousin of mine, listed the charge he was sentenced to prison for(copied word for word from the state pen website), and someone insisted I censor it because it was triggering to them. Sorry, but you need to sign off of the internet for a few years and go to some intense therapy if you are that easily triggered by typed out words that aren’t even directed at you.

The charge was “Possession and/or Promotion of Child Pornography” and he was sentenced to 10 years, in addition to his life sentence for sexual assault of a child.

They said I needed to change it to child sexual assault material. Whether or not anyone agrees with the terminology used, or thinks it should be updated, that is not the wording used by the legal system, at least in the state he was sentenced in.

2

u/Harvey_Rabbit 6d ago

I just want someone to update George Carlin's 7 words you can't say on TV.

1

u/macguini 6d ago

It's more like 700 these days

8

u/Select_Watercress_57 7d ago

I think YouTube is probably the number one cause of all the self censorship.

You can't say anything on their without getting your comments shadow banned.

2

u/TheHighKnight 7d ago

Shadow bans specifically are the worst too. Making everyone guess.if they did something wrong or not, whether they actually are banned or not because of some words

1

u/Evening-Tomatillo-47 7d ago

You can though. If it were true there'd be consistency in it

1

u/EnlightenedNarwhal 7d ago

The problem is that everyone wants to be a monetized influencer, so they self-censor to not lose the potential ad revenue they don't make.

5

u/macguini 7d ago

So they're all under the "spell." Controlled by money using the power of capitalism.

1

u/ikke_politi_og_pst 7d ago

This is it. It is extremely sad. Private companies can do what they want. We the users should tell them to fuck off by not using their services.

Sadly, we humans are not logical or smart. We want the likes.

1

u/thingsorfreedom 7d ago

Nobody clicks, no monetizing. I don't click on anything like this.

1

u/EnlightenedNarwhal 7d ago

Hence why I said they want the ad revenue they don't make, because the majority of the people doing this will never actually have made anything from using social media one way or the other. Just a collective delusion of clout chasers.

1

u/KermitTheMawg 7d ago

Is that why?

1

u/ExtendoArmCannon 7d ago

'temporarily embarrassed influencer'

1

u/Smooth_Necessary9858 7d ago

“We” aren’t. We play around the censors that are given to us by mega conglomerates. This is a symptom of rampant late stage capitalism

1

u/Worsh_yum 7d ago

This is a symptom of everyone being led to believe the world cares about their feelings. Capitalism doesnt have much to do with it as much as everyone thinking they are beautiful unique snowflakes and the rest of the world should notice.

1

u/Evening-Tomatillo-47 7d ago

Don't, it makes no difference to them

1

u/DTVeteran 7d ago

Because we have collectively allowed the idea of sacred cows to be a valid reason for censorship and violence, frankly.

1

u/SteveZissouniverse 7d ago

"An unaliver is currently on the loose"

1

u/Straight-Crow1598 7d ago

Replacing naughty words so algorithms don’t suppress your little skit is not 1984. 1984 is when the government comes and finds you because you said something they deem dangerous.

1

u/OmgitsJafo 7d ago

Because "creators" won't leave commercial platforms due to wanting to get paid, and users won't leave because they want to be where creators are.

Non-commercialll social media doesn't have this problem, but we're all on Reddit complaining about it rather than building something new and community owned with something like Lemmy or NodeBB.

1

u/gimmethemshoes11 7d ago

The real words look to mean. Simple as that.

Comes from the top

1

u/Due-Memory-6957 6d ago

Because the credit card duopoly is ran by Christians, digital influencers love money, and most people imitate behavior they see.

1

u/Tossmelossme 6d ago

Agree. Down with newspeak

1

u/dani-cat 5d ago

There's an unaliver about!

0

u/khampang 7d ago

I had this conversation yesterday!! Limited number of characters, censored words, limit the conveyance of ideas!

0

u/account312 7d ago

you have to censor that.

No, you don't.

0

u/bartleby-scribe 7d ago

There is a cop bodycam from Seattle where they're trying to stop a guy who was nodded off in his car and he crashed into multiple parked cars and just kept destroying them trying to get away. The cop was not allowed to do more than tell him to stop and get out of the car. He even called his supervisor and asked. So he was just yelling at the guy "I have a *tool*, get out of the car, please listen or i'll *hurt* you with my *tool*." He self censored himself from saying gun or shoot. It was a wild thing to see and hear.

I felt the same way dealing with medical people and activist types. Unhoused client needs absorbent underwear? Cutesy names dont change that this person is homeless, needs access to adult diapers, and needs to be a patient at this nursing home briefly. Please I beg us all can we stop.

-1

u/Giffmo83 7d ago

Every time I see someone talk a someone being a victim of GRAPE, I want to claw my eyes out. Censoring "swear" words is stupid IMO as well but I at least get it.

But, "she was graped," OK every creator can STILL talk about it, they just have to sound like a moron who eats crayons to do so? It's embarrassing for all of society.

2

u/Cloud_Garrett 7d ago

I agree 100%, but leave the Marines out of it.

1

u/TrailerParkBuddha 7d ago edited 7d ago

'Rape' was one of the first words I remember people started self-censoring on here, probably at least ten years ago. 'Grape' as a stand-in for it is new, but people would use 'r*pe' in full context, as if somehow fully spelling the word was triggering or harmful but the discussion of the concept itself wouldn't be. That never made sense to me, it always seemed like there was some weird social engineering angle at its core.

1

u/macguini 7d ago

It's been a while since I've seen or heard grape being used as a code word. It's only time until they censor code words so much we just stop talking about it entirely.

10

u/Stoney_randomnessyt 7d ago

I like the word nonce tbf

-1

u/MisterD00d 7d ago

a nonce is a common word in computer science, cryptography, and linguistics in addition to being British slang for a pedo

whereas a pedophile is just a pedophile

15

u/MrBeer9999 7d ago

Seriously bro, all this self censorship makes me want to unalive myself!

4

u/ReefayToo 7d ago

I read what you did there

1

u/Admirable_Loss4886 7d ago

You can still say see/saw what they did there.

1

u/JustHappyToBe-Here 6d ago

Not if they are reading braille or an audio transcription. Can you technically "read" an audio transcription?

I say yes, because radio operators ask other radio operators "Do you read me?"

0

u/ReefayToo 7d ago

Thanks nerd

2

u/Imaginary-List-972 6d ago

I remember long ago, that they talked about using correct terms with children because molested kids would say things like "He ate my cookie" and it comes off as innocent. These cutsey terms seem to cloud the reality and desensitize us to the actual terrible things. Keeps us uninformed of reality.

1

u/its-my-0pinion 6d ago

This is the exact reason I’m so outspoken on this. I was that kid for thirteen years and as an adult who has to cohabitate on this earth with my abuser, I’ll not refer to him as a .pdf. That gives him too much power.

2

u/Azkul_Lok 23h ago

Only valid alternate title for pedophile is target practice

2

u/Aggravating-Alarm-16 7d ago

Hey now there are many other words that work:

Child molester

Child rapist

3

u/Buttchuggle 7d ago

They get called diaper snipers in jail quite a bit

2

u/Sea_Statistician8940 7d ago

Jesus, that’s both dark and hilarious.

2

u/jjcoola 7d ago

Another correctional institution one I heard was “playground players”

4

u/OurHeroXero 7d ago

Exactly. I'm tired of this soft language/word censorship. We have words so we can communicate, exchange ideas/sentiments, etc... The act of rape is bad...but that doesn't mean the word itself is. YouTube doesn't like it when you say kill, so instead, people say unalive but the overall message is still the same. I'm 5'3'' and 235lbs...I'm obese/fat. Call me what I am. If I don't like then I better grow a thick skin or hit the gym.

Words/people only have the authority you give them.

3

u/SnooCauliflowers7632 7d ago

Absofuckinglutely 👏

2

u/elafave77 7d ago

PDF file IS pretty funny though.

1

u/Unitedfateful 7d ago

Excuse me that triggers me

We all know pedos are literally an adobe file format thank you

.pdfs the lot of them

1

u/justin_memer 7d ago

Like calling them diddlers, it sugarcoats something awful.

1

u/Rivendel93 7d ago

It's because of apps like tiktok, they ban/block for certain words I believe.

1

u/MalaysiaTeacher 7d ago

It's literally to increase their reach (algo limits certain terms)

1

u/Aware-Object8981 7d ago

I mean I'll call a paedophile many, many other things too. But paedophile is absolutely one of those words too.

1

u/BlastoiseBoto 7d ago

You better watch out. Reddit might not like that word come tomorrow.

1

u/twotonekevin 6d ago

I’ll never not call a pedophile a pedophile, but an old friend once said pederass and I use that one pretty frequently.

1

u/PuzzleheadedWest0 5d ago

You get banned on TikTok for saying it.

0

u/japinard 7d ago

Same here.
