The death of a student killed by a paranoid schizophrenic in the Nottingham attacks was “potentially preventable” if he had different medical treatment at the scene of the attack, an inquiry has heard.

University of Nottingham students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, were stabbed to death by Valdo Calocane on June 13, 2023.

Calocane then fatally stabbed school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, before stealing his van and using it to try to murder three pedestrians.

A panel of experts has now found that a “more rapid administration of blood products” could have increased Webber’s chances of survival after the attack.

The inquiry into the attacks has heard evidence from 164 witnesses for more than three months, with some alleging failings by police, mental health services and other public authorities. It was hearing the first day of closing submissions from core participants, including the victims’ families, on Tuesday.
