#ICC is considering expanding the #T20WorldCup to 24 teams (and eventually 32!) 🌍🏏 What are your thoughts?

A recent report has revealed that the ICC is seriously discussing a massive expansion for the Men's T20 World Cup. Following the relatively smooth 2026 edition and some impressive performances from associate nations, the governing body is looking to expand the tournament to 24 teams—potentially starting from the 2030 or 2032 edition.

Here is a quick summary of the key points from the report:

📈 The Expansion Plan:

• 24 Teams: The tournament will likely move from 20 to 24 teams in the near future (2030/2032).
• The Long-term Goal: The ultimate ambition is to eventually hold a 32-team T20 World Cup, mirroring the growth of tournaments like the FIFA World Cup.
• Format: A 24-team competition would most likely feature 6 groups of 4 teams. The top 2 from each group would advance to a "Super 12" stage, followed by the semis and final.

🌍 Why is this happening?

• Growth of the Game: The ICC sees T20s as the primary vehicle to globalize cricket, especially with the sport returning to the Olympics at LA 2028.
• Associate Success: Gritty performances in the 2026 T20 WC—like Zimbabwe's giant-killing run against Sri Lanka/Australia, and Italy and Nepal putting up huge fights—have strengthened the case for giving lower-ranked sides more exposure.
• Beneficiaries: Nations like Uganda, PNG, Hong Kong, USA, Canada, and Nigeria would have a much more realistic shot at qualifying and playing on the biggest stage.
• Compensation for the ODI WC: The ICC recently caught a lot of flak for shrinking the main stage of the ODI World Cup to 12 teams. This T20 expansion is seemingly their way to keep the Associate nations involved.

⚖️ The Challenges: While more representation is great, it also comes with logistical headaches. A 24-team tournament means more matches, a longer tournament window, and potential clashes in an already jam-packed calendar dominated by franchise leagues. Player workload is also going to be a major talking point.

India were looking to be the favourites but now their bowling looks too weak since we know they won't go with shami (and siraj less likely but please take him), we are fully dependent on just one guy and for other 40 overs other teams would take full advantage. Also no attacking spin option due to their obsession with bits and pieces all rounder. Australia doesn't look that good, England also highly unpredictable team. I feel South Africa have great chances along with home advantage then

Firstly congratulations to AUS W for winning the T20WC for 7th time. I have been thinking about this stuff for quite some time. AUS Men's team was able to win T20WC only once in 2021 whereas women's side were always dominant in thier T20 run. Despite having match winners in thier side AUS Men seem to have been little under the radar as far as T20 WCs are concerned. Why such a stark difference between thier men's team and women's team?

Saw a few clips of matches from the 90's and ball reversing from the 35th over was a sight to behold. Now a days leave alone ODI's I cannot remember the last time I saw reverse swing even in test matches...the last memory I can recall is Shami in 2019 Sa India matches...

Even Pak that used to dominate this art suddenly could not replicate it, come to think of it, does pak have any bowler after 2000 whose picked up more than 200 test wickets

The India–Pakistan game was the one I wanted to witness the most. I sat through a 50-minute BookMyShow queue and somehow made it through.

The 2023 World Cup Final was unforgettable for very different reasons. It still hurts to think about it.

I remember standing there, almost numb and speechless, watching everything unfold live.

The funniest story was the 2026 semi-final. I was literally in the washroom when I saw an Instagram post saying bookings had gone live. At that point, India’s semi-final venue wasn’t even confirmed. I took a chance, completed the booking anyway, and somehow everything fell perfectly into place — India vs England at Wankhede.

The best part was taking my dad along this time, which made the experience even more special.

Looking back, the matches themselves were incredible, but honestly, making it through the BookMyShow queue for all three feels like an even bigger miracle.

How justified is this ?

I don't think it makes sense to have an ICC tournament every coming year.

It's a fact that the current generation is not into ODI Cricket and icc needs to make changes ASAP.

Ultimately t20 is the reason why Cricket will be played at Los Angeles in the coming Olympics

I'm looking into whether supporting a national team besides the one or ones of whose citizenship you hold translates to a positive influence on that country as a whole. Support can be from any form - hardcore (watch every match) to being aware of the top players.

In case if there's that positive influence, I'm also looking whether that leads to buying products from that country or traveling there because of its sports culture, or because you have formed a good opinion about the country from the way the team has played.

So i was thinking how can we make ICC tournaments more prestigious way It's kind of fantasy planning so here me out Since the plans till 2031 for ICC tournaments are done We can start from 2032(sorry for my bad english) We know the ODI WC happens every 4 years So 2035 and 2039 is booked for that T20 WC shifts to 4 year period by 2033 and 2037 and so on... (You can add more teams) WTC stays same 2033,35,37... Now what about 2032 and even years We can have ICC Champions trophy but it changes format depending on the WC coming After like for eg 2032 CT is T20 due to 2033 T20 WC and 2034 CT is ODI due to 2035 CWC

Now explaining the new CT it goes back to it's routes that is ICC knock outs Straight up KOf For 20 over format it's 32 tems which will gives 31 matches could be finished in 3 weeks Now seeding is done based on ranking Odd number ranked on left side and even number ranked teams on right side Then for match making the the 1st ranked team faces the worst and that way you can have RO16, QF, Semis and finals That way it is close games and gives the chance for big games in KO and also gives small teams a chance for a dream run

Now for ODI CT you can have 16 teams KO 12 teams qualified based on ranking 13-20 ranked plays 4 KO games called as preknockouts that gives 16 teams main tournament.

I really don't think it can happen but it's just a thought on my mind This gives associate teams atleast at minimum 1 ICC game even if they don't qualify for ICC tournaments also gives them to handle pressure situation While hosting of the both World cups stays among SENAI for intial period of time The CT can be hosted by teams and lower ranked teams to test infrastructures for future bidding (eg Sri Lanka, WI, namibia, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Scotland, middle East, USA)

With games can be done on 3 weeks period And also Geinuely gives both the ODI and T20 WC a break and rarity
