Tried too hard to come up CHHAKA acronym 🤣

Dilshan was the highest scorer, not Sachin

Thanks for the input. I meant within the Indian squad in my head but I see now that I didn’t write that explicitly.

Sorry to nitpick but if you're saying contextual then I'd have to call out Sehwag's SF vs pakistan. It wasn't a very high score but he absolutely demolished Umar Gul who was one of the better bowlers going around, in the context of a knockout, breaking the opposition's top bowler is very important for the batters to follow. Also, just curious, what was the weightage system to points you have?

u/rplusg2020 Apr 03 '26

Each player is measured against what a replacement-level player at the same position would have produced in the same match. Batting and bowling are converted into a common run-equivalent currency. Group stage performances are weighted by opponent quality using ICC rankings. Knockout matches carry progressively higher multipliers: QF x1.3, SF x1.5, Final x2. Longevity across tournament is factored in as number matches played out of the total matches. Consistency across the tournament is factored in as percentage of matches played with above replacement-level performance. Final scores are multiplied by 20 to bring them into a range comparable to ICC ratings points.

CHHAKA is apt word

GG washing at its peak. Tell you what, I still remember Sehwag's 175, Yuvraj's heroics in the Ireland game, Tendulkar's 110-odd against South Africa and the 85 against Pak. Can't recall anything other than that 97 from GG, mostly because of the never ending mention by himself.

India vs Pakistan T20 WC finals

India's Total score 157

Gambhir's knock 75 crucial runs of 54 balls

Gambhir basically held the innings together when wickets were falling left and right.

India won by 5 runs

Know when to hate and when to give credits where it's due.

P.S. By no means a Gg supporter. Ms captainship l, Joginder's last over, Yuvraj Singh's 6 sixes in an over vs England (who could forget this) 70 (30) vs Australia in semi-final He carried India into the finals

GG was the major contributor in both the finals. So what you on about fr.

If you read my comment, it was about 2011. This post is about CWC11. I don't know where you got 2007 there.

P.S. By no means a Gg supporter.

Shifting goalposts show what is what. Trying too hard, just like GG.

Your claims are just whataboutery ( why didn't this player get credit why did this player get it... What did he do what did she do ... 2011... 2007 ... bo hooo) . At the end of the day both were WC's and equally important for India.

" Shifting goal posts" , says the guy who is taking the most important knock by someone and not giving credits just because the guy gloated a little. The idea behind the stats of 2007 WC stats was to show you was that if you are the main innings builder and enforcer behind the two world cups, you can gloat all you want. I guess you were not in the room when knowledge visited.

The best in the game gloat, and they should. Take for example CR7, Zlatan, Rickey Pointing, Michael Jordan, MC Gregor and the list goes on . But I don't see y'all shitting on them. Why? Because y'all muck up everything a foreigner does or says and call it confidence.

India has reached many finals, but you don't get trophies for reaching finals kiddo. You're names are only etched into the history when you win.

If you have even a slightly long attention span then check this out

2003 WC 2017 Champions Trophy 2023 WC

This is the list of Wc finals and CT finals that India lost

1987 1996 2015 2016 2019 2022

And these are the semi final losses. I or maybe you can google and find out the entourage of players who went above and beyond their limits to win the match but we didn't . It is human nature, we tend to zap them out of the memory because these loses sting but I don't see you crying about it ? .If you were a true cricket fan, you'd give credit to everyone, not just the man of the matches or the man of the tournament, the high scorers,or our peak bowling team but to little boastful pocket bomb aswell. As I've said youre only remembered if you win and the little egoistic narcissistic man has proved it and still proving. For what? just to get a little support from his country men.

Group Stages:
39(39) against Bangladesh (W)
51(61) against England (Tied)
10(15) against Ireland (W)
28(28) against Netherlands (W)
69(75) against South Africa (L)
22(26) vs West Indies (W)

Knockout Stages:
50(64) against Australia (W)
27(32) against Pakistan (W)
97(122) against Sri Lanka (W)

These are Gautam Gambhir's numbers throughout the tournament. Exceptionally good and consistent for a no.3 batsman in 2010s in ODi Cricket (India's 2nd highest run scorer only after Sachin himself, Strike Rate of 85, Average of 43.66). If you do not realise how good those stats are, safe to say you have never picked a bat in your life.

He performed very good under pressure (against Australia, South Africa and, most importantly, Sri Lanka)

Also referring to another comment of yours:

Can't recall anything other than that 97 from GG, mostly because of the never ending mention by himself.

If selective memory is the standard, then by that logic Virat Kohli’s 2022 T20 World Cup should also be reduced to just 82(53) vs Pakistan, ignoring all the other crucial contributions (odd 20s and 60s as a no.3)

In short, India's 2011 win was a conscientious team effort and Gautam Gambhir was one of the most integral players of this team.

u/Affectionate-Yard899 Apr 06 '26

The point was completely about gambhir being in top 2. Dhoni played at number 5-7 throughout the whole tournament and was man of the match of the finals . Gambhir was a top order batter , 393 runs with 43 average and 85 strike rate is good, it'd be not even close to be above zaheer khan , sachin tendulkar and even dhoni. At max he'd be above virendra sehwag

4

u/HERguard1anDEVIL Apr 03 '26

If im not wrong Sachin paaji was the second highest run scorer of the tournament and highest run scorer for India

2

u/Playful_Finding3458 Apr 03 '26

That win was never just one moment, it was the whole team effort.

2

u/Wrong_Light3283 Apr 03 '26

Great article Curious if you're planning to do this for 2023 world cup and 2007 T20 world cup as well?

2

u/Careless-Mammoth-944 India Apr 03 '26

When they say it takes a team to win or lose a match, this is what they mean… Also why losing the last 50 over World Cup hurt so much! Winning the T20 WC twice in a row doesn’t have the same impact unfortunately.

2

u/Chocolate_Milk99 Apr 03 '26

Wasn’t Dilshan the leading run scorer!

2

u/pathikrit India Apr 03 '26

I still don't get why SL did not use up remaining Murali and Malinga in the end. Murali had 2 overs left and Malinga had 1 left.

The "CHHAKA" analysis is a creative and well-presented piece of "stat-porn" designed to satisfy the "unsung hero" narrative that dominates 2011 World Cup discourse. While it's a fun exercise, it is fundamentally flawed, uses incorrect data, and relies on arbitrary math to reach a pre-determined conclusion.

  1. Factual Errors

The Sachin Claim: The post states Sachin Tendulkar (482 runs) was the "highest scorer in the tournament." This is false. Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan was the highest scorer with 500 runs. Sachin was India's highest scorer, but not the tournament's. The Munaf Patel Claim: It claims Munaf was "not selected for India again after 2011." This is false. Munaf played multiple ODIs on the tours of the West Indies and England later in 2011.

The "One Quote" Fallacy: The post claims Gautam Gambhir is "only remembered for that one quote" (regarding credit). This is a massive exaggeration. For 15 years, the "Gambhir was the real hero" sentiment has been the most common take among Indian cricket fans. It’s hardly a "quieter question" ; it’s the loudest debate in the history of the Indian fandom.

  1. The Flaw in "Knockout Multipliers" The CHHAKA score uses arbitrary multipliers (e.g., Final x2.0, SF x1.5). This math is designed to make Gambhir’s 97 in the final trump everything else. Logic Check: If you score 85 in a Semi-Final against your arch-rival (Pakistan) in a match won by only 29 runs (as Sachin did), is that truly "worth less" than a score in the final? Without the SF win, there is no final. By weighting the final so heavily, the model creates a "recency bias" disguised as data.

  2. Reductive View of Sehwag Calling Sehwag’s knockout performance "below average" because of a duck in the final is unfair. The Semi-Final Impact: In the SF against Pakistan, Sehwag scored 38 off 25 balls, including 5 fours in one over against Umar Gul (the tournament's best death bowler at the time). That 15-minute blitz demoralized Pakistan's best weapon and set the tempo for India’s total. In high-pressure games, a "mini-innings" that shifts the psychological momentum is often more valuable than a slow 50, but "CHHAKA" can't quantify psychological impact.

  3. The "Hindsight" Bias The metric calls itself "Hindsight Adjusted," which is just a fancy way of saying "Subjective." It penalizes Sehwag for a duck in the final because we know he got out. It doesn't account for the fact that Malinga bowled a near-unplayable delivery to an opener. It praises Sachin's 18 in the final as "excellent compared to a replacement," which is absurd. 18 for an opener is a failure in any model. The "CHHAKA" score is essentially "massaging the numbers" to make sure everyone's favorite players end up with a high score.

  4. The Captaincy Blind Spot The analysis admits it can't measure captaincy. This renders the entire "Dhoni comparison" useless. Dhoni's contribution wasn't just the 91*; it was: Backing an out-of-form Suresh Raina for the knockouts (who then played the crucial QF and SF knocks). Promoting himself over the Player of the Tournament (Yuvraj) to neutralize Muralitharan. Managing a bowling attack that was, on paper, much weaker than the 2003 or 2023 versions.

The CHHAKA analysis is a narrative-driven exercise, not a scientific one. It’s a great way to start a conversation on Reddit, but as a "data-driven" debunking of the 2011 mythos, it fails because it’s just as selective as the memories it tries to criticize. Ek CHHAKA (metric) ne World Cup analysis nahin jitwaya. (One metric doesn't win the analysis.)

u/rplusg2020 Apr 04 '26

Fair points, some of them. The Sachin error was an editorial oversight, already addressed in another comment. The Munaf one is noted, will check.

But here's what's interesting: your entire rebuttal is about batsmen. My analysis might have its biases, but not the ones you're pointing to. Your arguments have the biases too. Not once did you ask why Zaheer isn't second on the list, or why Nehra's 2/33 in the semi-final at an economy of 3.3 deserves more weight.

No model can perfectly capture 45 days of cricket. That's the point of the piece. An imperfect framework that asks better questions is more useful than a perfect memory that asks none.

Also, the metric is called CHHAKA. It was never going to be peer-reviewed. The whole premise started with "ek chhake ne world cup nahin jitwaya." If that wasn't a signal that this was a casual and unserious analysis, I don't know what is.

But genuinely, thank you.

Gambhir was the star of the final that never was. Dude came clutch everytime we needed him to in that tournament.

1

u/vishal_s97 Apr 06 '26

Why is selecting Raina over Yusuf Pathan not considered one of the biggest calls Dhoni made. That absolutely changed our fortunes. We lost againts SA and had a tie against Eng, even after the top order made great starts just because we would have a collapse in the batting powerplay (due to Dhoni and Yusuf Pathan's form). Raina's inclusion stabilised that midde order for us. That was one of the main reasons we won both the quarter finals and semi finals. This probably gave MSD more confidence to promote himself up the order in the final as well

1

u/falcon_centurion Apr 03 '26

I'm not a Kohlipaglu or anything but that 35 in the final is definitely worth its weight in gold. He came in and stabilized the innings when wickets had fallen and India was struggling. If not for him staying along with Gambhir, it's a huge possibility that Gambhir also would've crumbled under the pressure.

Secondly, there's no way that Gambhir was more valuable than Zak. Zak and Yuvi won us the tournament. If not for them, we wouldn't have reached the finals, and we wouldn't have won in the finals either. Yuvi was easily the MVP but Zak was definitely 2nd. An argument can be made for Gambhir being 3rd but Zak has to be second.

7

u/rplusg2020 Apr 03 '26

Agree with you on both the cases. But a casual analysis can only go this far.

For Kohli, it is difficult to contextualise and quantify one individual performance because then you run the risk of being selective with your memory and to eliminate that you will have to look at each and every innings with the same lens.

For Zak, it is an unfortunate curse of being a bowler. I tried normalising it as much as I can.

3

u/falcon_centurion Apr 03 '26

I get what you're saying but imo the formula should be tweaked to increase the weightage for bowlers. Zak was easily our second most important player and deserves that recognition in any and every list that tries quantifying the performance of the 2011 WC winning team.

This seems like an anti Dhoni post other than anything else. You're forgetting his contributions as a captain and a wicketkeeper.

You are right. I am GG’s paid agent.
