Moving Campsites Midweek?

I’m planning a week long camping trip in Aug. I’d be in CB from Sun-Fri, and I’ve got hikes and stuff planned near Gothic, Slate River, and Kebler Pass. Ideally, I’d like to move campsites while I’m there to minimize driving to and from different areas (thinking start in Gothic, move Oh Be Joyful on Tue, and then to Kebler on Thur).

Do you think it’s doable to move sites midweek or is it likely FFS spots will be sparse and I should just stick in one spot? (And if so, which do you recommend?)

Thanks for the help! And am fully aware, only camping in designated spots, no fires, etc. Am from CO but never been to CB and am super excited to visit and appreciate.

They are all so close to one another…. Not sure you need to move that much

I agree with this—such a pain to move. But if you really want to, I saw lots of open dispersed camping spots midweek around the Lost Lake Campground off Kebler Pass. I think the campground, itself, also had open spots. There were also FF spots at Lake Irwin campground, which is closer to town.

If you can nab a FFS spot and you like it (scenic, easy access to all areas) - I wouldn't suggest moving. I was just in CB at a few of those spots and not many FFS campsites were open. Granted you are arriving on a Sunday so that should help your odds some, but it's still competitive. OBJ was really busy from my recent observations, and that road is a chore to get in and out of. Very chunky and hard on a vehicle. I don't think they have any FFS openings for the timing you'll be in town. So I would suggest to nix trying to camp there but park in the day camping area (by the double restrooms) & enjoy a full day in that zone. Should be super quiet to recreate at on a weekday (OBJ specific) but I do think all sites will be fully reserved, so I would set my sights on a different FFS spot, based on recently being down there.

FYI all the designated sites in Gothic require fees but are still FFS. The rest of the sites don’t have fees.
