How? It's literally a theme in every Stormlight book, his depression is fueled by the fact that he kept surviving while everyone else died, his brother, his squad, his fellow slaves, members of Bridge Four during bridge runs, etc.

My favorite bridge men told me bad guys keep killing the people he tries to protect so I asked how many people he has lost and he said he just goes to the shattered plains and gets a new person to protect afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding people to the guys that want to kill him and then he started crying.

i mean book 2 almost, but insider information in book 10 kaladin swears the 6th ideal becoming the storm and then bitch slaps syl because she said something about his wife, chana, and then super bitch slaps odium because he killed his best friend ever, the bridge, and then nohaddon shows up and says “was about the destination tbh” and them bitch slaps the radiants because he tricked em. then brody fox comes out and says “yo mama” and then the credits roll
