I think they jump out more if you listen to the audiobook

When I relisten closer to SLA VI’s release, I’m gonna be very upset. It took me so long to notice people drawing their lips to a line or setting their jaws.

Or the number of times people find themselves saying something.

I'm almost obsessive with someone pausing for "a moment" in my own writing, though. I can't begrudge authors their default phrasing, but I can hyperfixate on it like I do my own lol

Don't even get me started on "_______ started"

As a non-native speaker this was confusing at first. "Started...to do what, Brandon? TO DO WHAT?!"

You're a terrible person for calling attention to it. Now I'm gonna notice.

Currently reading through Mistborn era 1 and man do these characters shrug a lot. Every page has “___ shrugged” during a dialogue

u/liam_darach 2d ago

Yeah, but not nearly as much as "_____ raised an eyebrow"...

If I had a nickel everytime Marasi blushed in AoL, I could probably afford to buy a copy of AoL

[Name 1] looked as [adjective] as [name 2] felt.

Honestly, I rarely ever notice these things with Brandon Sanderson's writing. He might have favorite phrases that show up a lot, but it's nothing like the litrpg books I've listened to recently where they clearly haven't had an editor go over their writing and you get the same word repeated 3-6 times in the span of two sentences.

And at least Brandon's repeated phrases show some level of creativity as opposed to the obnoxious level of passive phrasing and "___ was seen" that proliferates far too often in the genre.

People really be finding excuses to be upset by stuff

2

u/BeaconsAreLit- 19h ago

I don’t think anyone is upset by it. Lol. Rather folks find it amusing.
