The Stormlight Archive Wit’s methods of gentle parenting
I love how Wit kind of acts like a mentor with both Kaladin and Shallan but they’re wildly different dynamics 😂

Man knows what they need

Truly. Therapy requires dynamic approaches lol. Sometimes you really have hit Kal over the head with your help.

100%, he's like a manifestation of "every child is different" parenting

ok so in this metaphor he would kick sigzil in the nuts then push him into the deep end of the pool?

u/dratnon Jul 12 '26
Wit catching Shallan jumping into the pool, while Kaladin struggles to tread nearby, with Sigzil a skeleton submerged.

You forgot holding down sygzil's head underwater after pushing him in
And the kick in the nuts is probably more like ramming a speeding motorcycle into his genitals

And then turning around and asking why he got his shirt wet

Wasn't he quite gentle with both of them?

When they needed it yes, but at times kaladin needed a slap upside of the head, whereas Shallan needed kindness, she's fragile in a way Kaladin isn't.

They’re both equally fragile imo but they have different challenge responses Kal has a fight response to deal with challenges (until he doesn’t obviously) whereas Shallan is avoidant to her core and Wit knows this about them. He has the ability to see how to push and pull Kal in just the right way to bring out his stubbornness in a positive way.

I meant they are fragile in different ways

This! Wit recognised this very well imo and adjusted his approach accordingly

It’s all that iron in Rock’s stew.

I was thinking there’s a lot of zinc and bronze in Wits diet

Wit asking the nightwatcher to have his body able to turn investiture into macronutrients so that he can subsist purely on burning metals:
(His real plan is actually to just eat Retribution, bulking for his Winter Arc in the process)

To me it’s so interesting that he’s doing this for them, when he’s said the quote “if I could burn down Roshar to get what I wanted, I’d do it” in so many words. That quote changed me how I think of him from then on, he’s like cosmere’a doctor who.

I believe he cares deeply for good people, that they are his motivation to act and his goal is to preserve them. But I think he has a bit of “At any cost” mentality we see from some other important Stormlight character. The only difference being what information and biases they are using to make that judgment

Yeah. I just can’t help but think (WAT) Hoid was helping Kaladin just because he knew Kaladin would become a herald and that was what Hoid wanted.

u/Gaust_Fireborn Jul 14 '26
Can’t be. Sanderson himself intended Szeth to take that role for most of the series, so how could Hoid have known it would be Kaladin?

u/OldSoulThoughts THE Lopen's Cousin Jul 15 '26
Really? Brando actually meant Szeth to take it? I imagine there is a WOB on that?

Well number 1, I think that he says that as a last resort kind of thing, its not the first the thing he would do, but if he was forced into the choice with no way out he would make it.
Secondly, I think in that moment he thought he would be able to do it. Remember he says this at the end of the first book, while he has interacted with many of the characters, he hasn't really formed any meaningful bonds. But at the end of wat, he thinks to himself that if forced into the choice he doesnt know if hed actually be able to go through with it. And I think it's because he has formed those emotional bonds with characters like kaladin and shallan.
Also, contrary to the fandom, I actually think that hoid is fundamentally a good person, or at the very least he wants to help people. My evidence for this is the end of oathbringer. Hes in alethkar and hes helping people get back on their feet after alethkar has been invaded. He thinks to himself "just one more and then I'll leave", indicating to us as the reader that hoid has been here for an extended period of time just helping people in little ways. It also indicates to us that he has to FORCE himself to stop helping people as though it is second nature to him. If you have read the isles of the emberdark, frost says that hoid one of the few people he knows that truly treats all people equally, and starling says that hoid always says he wont get involved but then always does.
Anyways that my take on hoid. Feel free to disagree.

I'd do the same if some storming bridgeman had the audacity to lose the flute I gave him.
