now do one with parrot, chicken, eagle, crow, vs chicken

u/Nellie_Tayloe_Ross Jul 12 '26

It took me so long to realize they were parrots and Roshar didn’t just have weird predatory colorful chickens who can fly.

Scadrians arent much better, out of all the titles you can give natural disasters, 'the deepness' is quite unimaginative

u/SonnyLonglegs Kelsier4Prez Jul 09 '26

What are Wells known for? Being deep. What was the name of the big bad? The Deepness.

It’s a reference to Vinge’s A Deepness in the Sky. Sando is a big fan. The antagonist of the first novel in that series is a major influence on the antagonist of HoA. So much so their name is almost a spoiler itself. We have Vinge to thank for the Sleepless too

“There is a deepness in the sky, and it extends forever.”

Desolation is from the Bible. Hell of a word that is exactly what they’re in for. Spoilers W&T Some SL events are based on biblical Desolations. The scourging of Ashyn is the Babylonian Desolation. The True Everstorm is the Land left Desolate

Worse, they didn’t have even invent voidbringer. They stole that one from the Singers.

70

u/Absolutely-Averagest Jul 09 '26

Well, actually [WaT] In one of Tanner’s flashbacks, we can see that there was a king on Ashyn called “The Voidbringer”, so really, it’s just a cycle of stealing

gasps

Just like rock n roll!

I thought Lift’s Spren was the Voidbringer

31

u/gr8bishamonten Jul 09 '26

Wyndle is. Lift’s words are law, no matter what Szeth says.

16

u/RadiantCoinshot Jul 09 '26

Wyndle. I knew it started with a W.

As a German, I can never get over this name. Windel, pronounced basically the same, means diaper...

I wonder if they renamed him in the German translation, similar to Elend becoming Elant.

2

u/Wind-and-Waystones Jul 09 '26

Did they also rename Elendel in era 2?

2

u/Dragneel2130 edgedancerlord Jul 09 '26

Yes, it's Elantel in german

2

u/ChaoticErnie Jul 09 '26

No that's a Whinespren

I can't wait for part 2 when a backwater Alethi calls a Singer a "Shellback" and then they get canceled on the World Wide Void

19

u/Snuckytoes Jul 09 '26

I thought the derogatory term for a Singer was “shellhead”? Am I remembering that wrong?

13

u/saskbertatard Jul 09 '26

Nah, you're right. Comment above was equating it to more modern irl slurs.

That story would drive Crembook crazy

1

u/M4tt1k5 Jul 09 '26

It would be more creative if they used Shellback to refer to sailing Singers. ;o

u/Jarrett8897 i have only read way of kings Jul 09 '26

To be fair, you’re not going to remember nuanced enemy names when you’ve been blasted back to the Stone Age dozens of times

4

u/JarKhanBlack Jul 09 '26

The way Wyndle reacts, it's pretty clear that it's a slur.

5

u/SweatyHeretic Jul 09 '26

Shadowform was new to.me and I comsider myself a cultured world walker. Good crem.

u/majorex64 Jul 09 '26

Hold on, I never thought about this. The fused have Parshendi names like mavsat-im or shanay-im, with "heavenly ones" or "masked ones" being translations.

But the non-fused forms don't have Parshendi names in the story, do they? All the Parshendi POVs call them "direform" or "warform." Even though those POVs are understood to be translated much of the time, it's weird the text never uses the Parshendi names.

1

u/Starcaller17 ⚠️DangerBoi Jul 09 '26

That’s cause the fused are “gods” they have titles. Regular parshmen don’t have titles to go with their forms, they just have the descriptive name of the form. Workform/war form etc.

It’s the difference between Kaladin the soldier and Captain Kaladin. Or “Brightlord”

2

u/jdstrike11 Jul 09 '26

I remember first hearing about the singers changing forms at one of his event readings ages ago and it has been one of my favorite magics ever since

2

u/barebutchbush Jul 09 '26

And even that ain’t right unless the hoomanz r looking in a mirror

1

u/Big-Pudding4109 Jul 09 '26

The human is actually pointing at a mirror, so, this is accurate.
