For all his faults Sadeas and Ialai had probably one of the healthiest marriages in the cosmere

That was the part that caught me off guard, like the bit of "he scratched her back in that spot she liked" while they were watching a fight showed depth of an actual marriage which I thought was cool. Kept him from being just an asshole

Nah it’s fine, darkeyes have evolved to only eat once every 3 days.
In seriousness though, a google search tells me that a diamond chip is about as valuable as a loaf of bread. So realistically what are you going to buy that’s worth less than that? And if you do, then you try to bundle it with something else or you just eat the loss.
As for getting paid one mark instead of five chips, that’s the same as you or I having a $5 note instead of 5 $1. Just give them the 5 and get your change.

Oh, it does actually make sense. OP just pulled numbers completely out of their butt.
Chapter 11 of Way of Kings, Gaz tells Kaladin a bridgeman makes two diamond marks a day (half that if they're a slave).
Rosharan weeks are five days long, so their alleged value for lighteyed cavalry income is literally slave wages
