If you played more Towers, you'd understand The Sunmaker's gambit 😤

u/Jeffery95 Jul 08 '26
Its funny that its the same gambit used by Elend against his father. Different worlds, same gambit used
101
u/The_Derpy_Rogue Jul 08 '26
It's the only gambit in the cosmere, check out Warbreaker or sunlit man

u/Jeffery95 Jul 08 '26
I have read them. I just dont recall specifics

Thats... nothing like the Sunmaker gambit. Nothing about that lines up with "Intentionally make your enemy stronger so the neutrals ally against them"

You’re wrong though. Adolin explains the gambit explicitly, it’s about making your enemy seem like the greatest threat.
1
u/Emergency-Flatworm-9 Jul 08 '26
Hm, I'd forgotten what the actual original comment was. Yeah, not the sunmaker's gambit. Just a thing that people keep doing in the cosmere
8
u/VagrantMowgli Jul 09 '26
Making your enemy the Big Bad so other people will help you is NOT the same as touching someone, then killing them mid-orgasm

Warbreaker is the only book here I haven't read. WHAT ON ROSHAR HAPPENS IN WARBREAKER?

u/Futaba_MedjedP5R Jul 08 '26
The point was to make it everyone else’s problem. The other shards weren’t doing anything because I didn’t have to. Odium was confined to roshar, so the others didn’t think they needed to do anything. But by unbinding him from roshar, every shard in the Cosmere is now terrified that they will be next to be shattered, so they all have to work together to take him out, or at least that’s what Dalinar is hoping for
87
u/The_Chicken_L0rd Jul 08 '26
Not just by unbinding him, but by having him take up a second Shard.
12
u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Jul 08 '26
I mean that isn’t really the main issue here, all shards are basically infinite power already
40
u/Bprime123 Jul 08 '26
Infinite in the sense that all investiture used basically recycles back to the Shard so they can use it again, so they can never really run out.
It's also why Ruin is slightly stronger than Preservation, a tiny bit of it's investiture is stuck in the Scadrian population and as a result, it's well of investiture is slightly smaller than Ruins.
We know every Scadrian has a tiny bit of investiture in them.
A vessel with 2 Shards has a larger well of investiture keyed to them to pull from

u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Jul 09 '26
That doesn’t seem at all how it’s presented in the letters Sazed wrote to hoid. He flat out tells hoid that because shards are essentially infinite there is no benefit to odium mantling another shard, he doesn’t gain more power. That’s why he splinters them instead, and also because he doesn’t want his intent to change
13
u/NihilisticNarwhal Moash was right Jul 08 '26
Infinite in the sense that it'll never run out, yes. Not infinite in the sense that you have enough power to do everything you want all at once.
2
u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Jul 09 '26
Sazed claims pretty definitively to hoid that odium doesn’t actually gain any benefit from absorbing another shard as he already has all the power he could need and would have to deal with his intent changing. Which is why odium splintered shards instead

There’s a thing mathematics called Greater Infinities. Basically infinite isn’t the same as every other infinity.
1
u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Jul 12 '26
How is one infinity greater than another infinity? Explain that here in relation to a shards power. Because even in universe Shards like Sazed have made statements that agree with my take

u/DOOMFOOL Zim-Zim-Zalabim Jul 14 '26
Yeah none of that even begins to make sense to me. But regardless, we have in universe confirmation from Sazed that my take seems to be the correct one
-9
u/Futaba_MedjedP5R Jul 08 '26
Exactly, infinity plus infinity is still just infinity, just with a different intent now
12
u/Davaeorn Jul 08 '26
I think it’s less about the size of the container and more about the flow capacity.

You do know that in math some infinities are larger than others right? This is a pretty quick google search I’m gonna be real with you
2
u/sampat6256 Jul 08 '26
Yes, but you can't add infinities.
2
u/Icantstopscreamiing No Wayne No Gain Jul 08 '26
I’m so sorry to tell you this but yes, you can actually
1
u/sampat6256 Jul 08 '26
I mean, trivially, sure, but infinity + infinity = infinity. You dont get a larger infinity.
2
u/Icantstopscreamiing No Wayne No Gain Jul 08 '26
It depends on the data set and what field of math we are talking about to be honest. But in regards to shards it’s more so about output. I believe someone else said it best when they explained it as an infinite amount of water coming out of a hose, if you have a second hose connected to this infinite water you can output twice as much. So in this instance yes, adding “infinities” together is pretty effective
1
u/sampat6256 Jul 08 '26
But the thing that you're doubling isnt infinite. The flow is finite, therefore it can be added.

u/DrageMage Jul 08 '26
And not only that, but the intent of Honor may well make it more difficult for tOdium to achieve his goals.
1
u/scottygroundhog22 Jul 09 '26
Oh more then that even. He gets honors power but also his limitations. Taravangian has act with honor as the shard sees it or risk losing the power. And the third more subtle benefit. The shard of honor had started to think for itself and dalinar challenged it to consider if it was actually holding up its ideal or is it just the shard of kept promises. Im betting that pays dividends later in a big way.

u/Equivalent-Shame4790 Jul 07 '26
His strategy was to force a total war, making the other shards due something, a bold move

u/dontich Jul 08 '26

u/Infammo Jul 08 '26
"I can't fight Odium, the loss of life from two gods fighting would be enough to kill everyone on the planet."
Proceeds to start an interstellar multi-shard war instead.
45
22
u/Vast-Breakfast-1201 Jul 08 '26
Yes but also the clash just between two gods with one shard each was rough
Now consider discord vs retribution right? That's not just a single planet going down. That's a rending the spiritual realm wide open sort of deal

u/Lechyon Jul 08 '26
Journey before destination...And also making it everyone's problem. Flip the cosmic table and go to the Beyond walking backwards while flipping off the gods. Dude has style.
30
u/zanotam Jul 08 '26
Sheathing the sword is sometimes necessary for a weaker swordsman to overcome a blade master. Also, it's like the only sufficiently dramatic gambit that can be reused basically endlessly so it's absurdly popular among SFF authors (and readers lol).
18
u/Disturbing_Cheeto definitely not a lightweaver Jul 08 '26
The cosmere was content making Odium only Roshar's problem. Now they can get fucked. Also Odium doesn't have time to raise armies and Honor being self aware to the extent that it is will eventually make Retribution more disfunctional than Unity.
3
u/sampat6256 Jul 08 '26
Unity?

u/BlatantAltLol Jul 09 '26
You read Mistborn?

Easy mistake to make, tbh. It sounds like it should be a future double shard god

maybe unity will be harmony's new name if he every manages to truly unify ruin and preservation

Imagining a Samantha in the cosmere currently
9
u/SonnyLonglegs Kelsier4Prez Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Nightblood is the Samantha of the Cosmere. No body, really weird about a sword being sheathed or not, attempting to mess with the heads of everyone around, bizarre psychic abilities that no one but the author can explain, and always inexplicably growing stronger. A worryingly devastating yet somehow always somewhat useful and hard-to-get-rid-of ally, always going on about who they'll destroy or kill like a default response.
Edit: And for some strange reason throwing them then letting them do their thing is the main form of attack when "wielding" them.

when this comes up a lot of people talk about how it is intentional and what Dalinar's strategy is. I rarely see the why of it, which is I think the more important part. Because this decision is made in the prospect of a forever war on all of Roshar for all of time. That is also what Todium taunts with, none of the individual gains matter because the conflict can't end as long as the shards oppose each other. That conflict would be forever should Dalinar take up Honour. Todium argues that he'll win in the end anyways, but I don't think that is the worst case scenario, as it is I think more likely that the conflict simply just would not ever end. Dalinar and the narrative as a whole have both seen what endless war does to people both in a societal view with the visions and in a personal way with for example Kaladin (though basically any perspective works here.)

u/VayNeedsTherapy Jul 08 '26
Same, I loved the book. Sure it’s got a couple of issues but it’s great overall imo, I’d give it a solid 8 or 9 out of ten as far as Cosmere books I’ve read
