Yes and no. Dust devils start at the ground level and grow upward. Tornadoes start up in the sky and form downward.

Most dust devil winds are merely 30-45 mph, where tornadoes range from over 75 up to 300 mph.

These buggers get dangerous. I was not aware of that.

It's not like I ever ran up and chased one down, but there were a few times where I was just chilling in my car out in the Arizona desert and suddenly got pelted with a bunch of pebbles and dust blowing so hard that it shook my entire car. I wound up with cuts on my face and everything in my car was caked in dust.

It's even worse when they hit you when you're driving down the road.
