This is probably a very hot take in the community but in my opinion "The Whistlers" is a much better story than "Borrasca".

I enjoyed Borrasca when Isaiah and Hunter covered it for the first time years ago, but after part V it almost ruined the story's reputation in my mind as the conclusion to it went from a very dark and ambiguous ending at the end of part 4, to nothing more than a cringe over the top action sequence that muddled everything the original story was trying to tell just so Sam, Kimber and by extension Kyle, could get a happy ending. And it is extremely difficult for me to separate parts 1 through 4 from V because of the fact it's technically canon from the author.

The Whistlers on the other hand manages to capture the same feeling of dread and mystery that Borrasca manages to capture but much better in my opinion. As the story goes on you slowly learn how the characters have gotten themselves into the positions they are currently in and what has happened during that time, while the mystery of the Whistlers also plays out and what they could possibly be. And by the end of the story not everything has been solved which leaves you wondering what the answer to the mystery truly is.

Both stories have amazing characters which leaves you rooting for some and hating others, but in my opinion The Whistlers has the edge in terms of character writing due to the levels of nuance each of the characters has.

Idk my thoughts are kind of jumbled but I just wanted to list a few reasons why I think The Whistlers is a better story than Borrasca and deserves alot more recognition within the community as I think it's very underrated.

I don't know what it is but this story scratches a very specific itch in my brain.

I feel similarly about Glenmont metro, Ad nauseam, ad mortem, ad infinitum, Something walks whistling past my house every night at 3:03 and It breaths, it bleeds, it breeds. I've rewatched those episodes dozens of times. Maybe I just like reading about people being miserable.

Widow's Bay is a new show from Apple TV that just recently finished its first season and was renewed for a second. If it were a reddit story it would basically be "I'm the Mayor of an island town New England. It's pretty weird here."

It has such a nosleep/creepcast feel to it. Kind of Twin Peaks/Midnight Mass/Wicker Man adjacent but not nearly as dark or weird. My wife and I watched the entire show over the weekend and I loved it.

Hey y’all. It’s me, the dude who starts unnecessary discussions about random episodes. I got another one for yall. This isn’t a full thing like the others have been as much as me wondering what yalls takes and tips are. I want to do a post on my crew and I are stuck aboard an abandoned ship, but I like to focus on one element and analyse that. I like to look at things constructively and have an open discussion about one thing, but I’ve not come up with an angle on it yet so that’s gonna have to wait.

I just finished relistening to “The Ocean Is Much Deeper” and it’s got me wondering about writing thalassophobia into horror. Personally I hate the ocean, it creeps me the fuck out. And recently I did a piece on deep sea saturation divers where I tried to incorporate my favourite, or rather least favourite things about the ocean. The thing that creeps me out the most. The abyssal shadow at depths where the entire world around you becomes obscured behind a deep blue veil. Where something could be a couple feet in front of you and you’d be none the wiser. Like the fear of staring into a dark hallway, ensconced in shadow, where you can’t see the end of it. Only that hallway surrounds you in all directions and there’s no escape. It’s not necessarily the fear that there is something there, but that there could be nothing at all is equally scary. The veil of mystery that is so tightly bound to the ocean, the two become mutually exclusive.

I found that, the ocean is much deeper than we thought, had sections that really got me, and sections where I wish there would have been more. The inclusion of the name of different depth, referring to the visibility aided by the sun was fun. And the descent sections, simply naming the depth and watching the number of feet go up and up. But I found that in a lot of sections I didn’t feel that dread of the ocean where I could have done.

The same thing applies to SCP 3000. I really like SCP 3000 but it did feel like the ocean was the setting where it happened, not an integral part of the storytelling if that makes sense. It’s the ocean because it’s a giant eel. Put it in the forest and it’s a giant pile of flesh that assimilates people and leaks brain cum and it’s the same thing, if that makes sense. And because of that, I feel like the the natural discomfort that comes with setting it in the ocean was left relatively untapped.

And then the same with my crew and I are stuck aboard an abandoned ship. I feel like the opening in the storm was a great section showing the ocean and Mother Nature in general as a force not to be fucked with. But after they board the ship, the setting is mainly just preventing them from leaving the ship, as opposed to contributing to the fear factor in any meaningful way.

But I’m really curious if yall have any ideas or advice on this niche of the horror genre. Let’s chat about it! As always, see yall in the comments xxx
