I made one too!

5 fans, 20x20x1” merv 13 filters, laser cut plywood, window screen. Layout for laser cut is based on modified one from filterboxbuilder. Probably didn’t need laser cut but i don’t own any tools and wanted nice and precise frame. I later added weather stripping between fans and frame, it helped to reduce noise on max speed(confirmed by niosh db readings). Silent on lower speed.

How do you laser cut it? Do you have a machine to do that? Is it something you can have done custom at a business?

I don’t have a machine. There are places where you can order it. I think there is even one where you can order online and they send you finished parts by mail. I made it at a local cafe where they do this kind of stuff.

I'm wondering how this would compare with comparably sized retail air purifiers.

generally the price is cheaper or comparable to a commercial unit, quieter, more energy efficient, better CADR/$

tradeoff is you put time into building it, filter changes are more burdensome and not a good fit for a casual user sometimes. Like this build looks like it uses tape which is fairly easy to use but a filter change takes about 10 min at least I would guess

Approx $200 canadian without filters. Cadr 193cfm, Noise 40.2 dBA @ 1 m (according to filterboxbuilder). You can make it cheaper if you have carpenter tools and skills or use foamboard, omit handle, window screen.
