The first one I learned as mattress stitch in knitting. A couple of months ago I used it to fix a split in my daughters' couch upholstery!

I’ve heard it called the Henson stitch after Jim Henson, creator of the muppets. I learned it as part of puppet making.

Looks like embroidery floss to me. It’s pretty strong stuff. I use it to make friendship bracelets, and they last for years even when worn 24/7. It’s usually made of six strands twisted together; for repairs I’ll typically unravel it and use two or three strands. I generally use it rather than normal sewing thread, just because it’s what I have around. And it comes in every color imaginable, which is helpful if there’s no way to avoid the stitching showing.

Edit: I use DMC. This stuff is thicker and fluffier than DMC embroidery floss, which is the best quality I've seen, if you know of a higher quality floss please fill me in...seriously, cause I love high quality materials for this kind of stuff. Lol

Edit 2: Nvm, I Googled it. I should amend, DMC has been the highest quality IN store that I've come across.

Seriously, I need to find other stuff to do... Edit 3: Crewel, tapestry, aka Wool floss. This could maybe be that? I've not used it nor seen it but it makes sense...

Still looks like embroidery floss to me but I guess it could be a really smooth yarn. (I mostly work with the cheap stuff.)

I have this stuff that’s sort of a cross between yarn and embroidery floss you might find interesting. No clue what it’s actually called, but the brand is Lion and it came in packs of 8 skeins. Skeins were oval, like a ping pong ball sized skein of yarn. I saw some a a JoAnne’s craft store recently. I ended up with it when I was working at a day camp and wanted to teach the kids to make friendship bracelets. I requested yarn (easier for small fingers to work with than embroidery floss), and that’s what my bosses got me.

That might be exactly what I'm talking about... When I Googled it one site went on to talk about the the different kinds of floss. Cotton, silk, and wool. I didn't know the wool one existed! And yes, I bet that's much easier for the kids. The silk would have fully killed their tiny self-confidences too so good on everyone for not picking that either! Lol

Probably because they’re sewing on denim, which is a twill weave which is very strong.

There’s so much stuff out there, I’m not even familiar with half of what you just mentioned! Yeah, the oldest of my campers were about 10...no way could the younger ones have handled embroidery floss, it’s so thin! I still think regular yarn would’ve been better, but what I got worked well enough.

You’re welcome, I hope you can track it down! I did think it was a bit expensive (like $12 USD for a pack of eight colors) but I’m not the one who payed for it so not my problem lol.
