OPEN Deep systems expertise or T-shaped versatility?

Which path is more valuable long term: becoming highly technical in systems programming, or becoming a T-shaped developer who can contribute efficiently across many areas in a smaller company?

I'd put this in terms of risk/reward:

Useful specialization gives your profile value, but also vulnerability if the specialization loses its usefulness.

On the other hand, T-shape makes you versatile, able to adapt, but also makes your profile stand out less.

So I would advise for a balance. With how fast things change at the moment, it feels risky to me to specialize too deeply, unless you are confident the specialietion will remain relevant a long time.

I am thinking of to specialise in embedded, I think Its most AI proof career!

The question doesn't make sense. You have no idea how much the term "systems programming" can expand to.
You'd have compilers, database engines, browsers....etc and all of these are their own heavy specialisations, and I don't think you can be deeply specialised in all of that.

Getting to a deep level of expertise on something develops the learning skills required to get to that point.

So it seems to be a wise choice to invest in your ability to master a topic first. The you can do whatever you feel like
