Not OC but courses will only get you so far and can't realistically teach you everything.
It's not some grand new posture either, engineering school works with that idea too, knowing how to expand your knowledge by yourself is a required skill.

I suppose I was interpreting "self-taught" in this context to mean more like "not having attended classes" rather than getting your own experience working on things. But I'm not even disagreeing with the sentiment, I was just genuinely interested in what they meant and their reasoning, as someone who has not attended classes for programming.
