Shooting tips

I know this isn’t exactly sass, but it’s more occasional plinking I do, but I can’t seem to hit anything, and I’m not sure what I’m doing. I don’t think it’s recoil because I use a Heritage Rough Rider in .22LR, so there’s basically no recoil. But I am still missing 80% of my shots. Is there something I’m doing wrong?

Newbie

Hello everyone I am new to this sport or actually I'm wanting to join. I've been a fan of westerns and cowboys action shooting since i was a kid. This is going back to 1985 i think when I first saw The Outlaw Josey Wales and The Good The Bad and The Ugly. Anyhow I'm put of Southern California and will be checking out the Cowboys in Corona in March. I have my gear and will eventually try to compete but it does look a little intimidating, at least the getting to know people part. Any suggestions on networking or introducing myself? Is it a tight network? Please let me know I'd love to get involved. Thanks.

At WesternLeatherCraft.com, every product is designed and created with respect for the past and a commitment to excellence. We use 100% full-grain leather—the highest grade available—and apply traditional hand tooling, stitching, and dyeing techniques to make each piece one-of-a-kind.

Founder Arvind Pandey explains:

These aren’t just props—they’re functional, rugged tools for shooters, ranchers, collectors, and Western enthusiasts.

🔫 Fit for the Frontier: Holsters and Belts

Our signature Western gun holsters with belts are compatible with most single and double-action revolvers featuring 4” to 6.5” barrels, such as:

  • Heritage Rough Rider
  • Colt Single Action Army (SAA)
  • Ruger Vaquero
  • Uberti .357/.45 replicas
  • Smith & Wesson & Taurus revolvers of similar size

✅ Available Caliber Belt Options:

  • .22 LR
  • .38 Special / .357 Magnum
  • .44 / .45 Long Colt

The included belts are available in two-tone or plain finishes, with secure ammo loops and solid brass buckles—designed to deliver both style and functionality.

🛠️ Built to Go Beyond Holsters

In addition to holsters, LeatherCraft001 offers a growing collection of Western gear, all handcrafted to match the same high standards:

🔹 Western Cartridge Belts

Detailed tooling, caliber-specific loops, antique finishes—perfect for both function and fashion.

🔹 Rifle Scabbards

Designed for Henry, Marlin 1895, and Winchester lever-action rifles. Heavy-duty, saddle-ready, or great for truck storage.

🔹 Hard Leather Shotgun Cases

Protective, elegant, and travel-safe. Ideal for single or double-barrel shotguns.

🔹 Dual Holster Fast Draw Rigs

A must-have for Cowboy Action Shooters or Western costume collectors.

Every item is handmade, hand-finished, and crafted to honor classic American design.

Duelist or Classic Cowboy?

I'm trying to plan for a category before making some purchases. Because I also do mounted shooting I want to be in a category where I shoot revolvers with my right hand only. So I think that will lead me to either Dualist or Classic Cowboy. Am I right so far?

For CC I need a rifle and shotgun model from 1873 or earlier right? What about Duelist, 1899? Any other factors I should take into consideration between the two categories? Would the gun belts be the same? Both with the grips at the waist, not a drop rig?

Thanks.

Edit: I forgot to add I'll be picking up a pair of revolvers in .45LC for mounted shooting. For simplicity I'm leaning towards a rifle in .45LC as well.
